Love Your Garden Episode 1: Behind The Scenes

This was a small space again, and the small ones are always more challenging. You are always trying to make the garden feel more spacious as well as more interesting, and there is only so many people you can fit in at one time, so there’s a lot of toing and froing to make it work. We didn’t realise we were doing both the front and the back garden until we arrived, so that was a bit of a shock!

We had looked at the back garden when we got there and thought we can crack that out in no time, but then suddenly we had to split our teams and it became a very big job. So Frances took the front garden and Alan, Katie and I took the back.[/fusion_text][fusion_imageframe lightbox=”no” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”none” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/fusion_imageframe][fusion_text]This is Marcus from frosts who helped us create this lovely front path. I love the curved brickwork here as it sweeps round to the front door.[/fusion_text][fusion_imageframe lightbox=”no” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”none” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/fusion_imageframe][fusion_text]A couple of likely lads at work here: in the front we have Paul, who manages the task of finding all of the products for the gardens, and supervising it on the production side. This was his first episode on the show and he did a sterling job.

Just behind him is Kevin from Frosts who you may recognise from other blogs we’ve done. He’s our telehandler driver, and the precision with which he controls those machines is phenomenal.[/fusion_text][fusion_imageframe lightbox=”no” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”none” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/fusion_imageframe][fusion_text]Here is Frances making her containers in the field opposite the house, where we had to do some of our work and filming because it was just too congested on the property.

We often turn up and start looking at what we need to build, and then when we look for materials they say, “Can you make it out of pallets?”[/fusion_text][fusion_imageframe lightbox=”no” lightbox_image=”” style_type=”none” hover_type=”none” bordercolor=”” bordersize=”0px” borderradius=”0″ stylecolor=”” align=”none” link=”” linktarget=”_self” animation_type=”0″ animation_direction=”down” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” hide_on_mobile=”no” class=”” id=””] [/fusion_imageframe][fusion_text]This is Matt and Rob, part of the sound and film crew. Blocking it on the left right here is Amy, a make-up artist, and Jim on the right who is the head of production and the real boss on the scene. He’s also brilliant because he assembles all of the flat pack. The colours in this garden were marvellous. You can see the Rhododendrons here and lots of herbaceous perennials with it. As you can see, you can’t take a step without bumping into a camera!

I loved the opportunity, not only to construct it, but also to get my hands in with the plants. I’m a horticulturalist at heart, as well as a landscaper. Lilies are a magnificent flower – a sublime addition to any garden.

But a small red scourge known as the lily beetle can put an end to your joy in no time.

Lily beetles, or Lilioceris lilii, are pesky creatures that will take a little effort to get rid of, so I thought I would give you a few quick tips.

You can remove the eggs, larvae and adult beetles by hand, and it’s very effective if you have only a few lily plants. Pesticides can also be effective, but most will cause damage to the environment as well as other beneficial insects and creatures. Certainly do not spray when plants are flowering because you will affect pollinating insects.

Neem Oil and Spinosad are two environmentally friendly options that you could research.

Eggs

Larvae

[/fusion_title][fusion_text]Larvae are the most difficult to control, and the most resistant to sprays. If you have a lot of larvae you may have to patrol daily until they are under control. To catch the adult beetles you must be vigilant and fast. As soon as they sense movement, the speedy little creatures will immediately drop to the soil level and lie on their backs, which makes them very difficult to spot. Use this habit against them by holding a jar of soapy water under them and nudging them off the leaf. They will immediately fall into the water. Scout your plants several times a week, especially early in the season as the adults emerge from the soil.

A well-crafted hanging basket will bring incredible flavour to your garden with its dense mixture of colours and textures… but many people find them intimidating to take on.

The good news is, they’re easier than they look to create.

So, here’s my quick guide for a dazzling basket:

Choices

With hanging baskets you have two basic options to choose from: those with solid sides or the traditional wire types.

I find the wire types much more dynamic because they allow me to grow some plants through the sides rather than everything coming from the top.

Whichever way you go, buy the largest one you can – the more room for plants and soil the better.

Construction

Moss lining makes the basket for me: it’s natural, it looks great, and you can pick it up from your local garden centre. Using a bucket or empty pot to steady the basket while you work, place moss around the bottom half, and then add newspaper as a barrier between the moss and compost. This will stop the soil from falling out initially, and as the paper rots the roots will grow through to hold the earth in place.

For soil, you can take the easy route and pick up ready-made hanging basket compost, or you can use ordinary potting compost and add hydration crystals to help the soil retain water and make it easier to wet.

Remember, hydration is key here – hanging baskets will dry out in no time without regular watering.

Fill this bottom half with soil and poke plants through the sides; trailing lobelias are a perfect option here. Now add more moss lining up to the rim, line again with newspaper, fill that with compost and put plants in the top.

You will want a dramatic centrepiece for your basket. Something like an upright fuchsia or a geranium will give you a strong and vibrant starting point. Surround that with trailing plants like petunias or ivy-leafed geraniums, and then add some fillers such as busy lizzies. Finally, adorn the sides – trailing ivy or helichrysum will give it the perfect finish.

Practicalities

If your basket is hard to reach for water you can buy a lance attachment for your hose, or for a homemade solution you can tape a stick of bamboo to your existing hose. Some people prefer to use a pulley system to lower their baskets for watering.

Also, keep in mind that you will want to leave a 1.5-inch gap from the soil to the top of the basket to help it hold water.
