It’s easy to forget about perennials. They grow quite happily year after year without much help from you. But after a few years they get too big and overcrowded – time to divide the plant.

What does that mean?

Dividing perennials is simple – just dig up any large clumps of perennials, separate them and replant them elsewhere in your garden. You are getting extra plants for free!

Why do they need to be divided?

Perennials grow fast and can develop large clumps that are also prone to fungal infections and insect infestations. The plant may stop flowering and even die off in the centre of the clump – it gradually becomes less healthy. It may also encroach on neighbouring plants and damage them.

How do I know if my plant needs dividing?
- If the plant has outgrown its space in the garden and looks too big and overcrowded
- The plant is flowering less than before or producing smaller blooms
- Its growth in the centre is starting to die off, or the plant is growing less than usual

When should I divide them?

That depends on the plant. Dividing a plant while it’s in bloom would be too stressful for the plant (and the gardener). For most perennials, the best time is spring, while they are still dormant.

But there are exceptions to the rule: spring-flowering perennials like iris and poppies can be divided in late summer or early autumn. And peonies, goatsbeard, foxtail lillies, bleeding hearts and butterfly milkweed hate to be moved or divided at all. You should only divide these when absolutely necessary, or you risk killing the plant.

What do I do?

It couldn’t be easier. Choose a day when it’s not frosty or waterlogged. Using an ordinary garden fork, go around the plants, teasing them out of the ground. Knock off some of the soil so the roots are clearly visible.

Now you need to divide them by the roots or bulbs. You can slice down through the root/bulbs using an old kitchen bread knife.

My top tip is to do this with two garden forks. Push them into the plant back-to-back in the spot where you want to divide it. Then simply push the handles together, separating the fork tines. That lever action separates the roots or bulbs where they are weakest, limiting the damage done.

Now what?

Now you have two options. You can either replant the clumps in your own garden, or you can share them with your neighbours or your family. This technique is perfect if you want to do some swapsies with your fellow gardeners – you should be able to get some goodies in return for your perennials.

How do I replant them?

Perennials are generally very hardy plants but dividing them can damage the roots, so give them a nice comfy cushion to grow new ones into. Dig a hole bigger than the root and add some soft peat-free compost and compound fertiliser. Put the plant in the hole and cover with soil, then firm them back in and water well. It’s that easy to spread the love!

Generally, June drop isn’t a worry. Instead, it’s a natural process because the trees can only hold so many fruits.

However, it’s important to bear in mind the age of the tree because younger trees tend to drop more fruit. Then, as they establish and mature, there should be less fruit dropping naturally.

At this time of the year, apple trees naturally shed excess fruit so don’t be alarmed if you see young apples falling to the ground. This is known as the ‘June drop’ and usually occurs at this time of the year when the tree sheds surplus fruit. It can also occur if the weather has been bad after flowering and/or there has been poor pollination of the fruit.

You can prevent this by pruning to allow plenty of light and air circulation into the rest of the tree. It can also be prevented by ensuring the tree is getting the right balance of nutrients. The plant will benefit from nitrogen, so add a well-balanced liquid fertiliser in later winter or early spring to boost before growing season. On the other hand, it’s important to not over feed the plants because too much nitrogen can lead to dropping fruit too.

A lack of water can also be a factor resulting in fruit dropping. So, ensure the tree is sufficiently watered and maintained. Watering and then mulching during the spring will help to retain moisture and decrease the likelihood of fruit falling.

Feed fruit trees in later winter or early spring, first ensuring that the soil is moist. Depending on where the tree is situated with impact how it is fed. For instance, if the tree is planted within grass, it’s best to remove a ring of about 1m wide around the base so there is sufficient space to feed for the fertiliser to soak into the soil towards the roots. Once the grass has been removed, the soil should be lightly forked to break it up and loosen the space slightly.

Every garden should have a climber. They cover eyesores like walls and fences and add height to beds and borders by growing over arches and pergolas.

You can also use climbing plants to create an immersive seating area, surrounding yourself with colour and fragrance.

How to plant a climber

Before you buy a climber, check the label to make sure it is suited to the position you have chosen. A sun-loving plant will never thrive in shade.

Clear the area of weeds and dig in peat-free compost or well-rotted manure. This is especially important around walls, where the soil if often poor and dry.

Dig a hole about 45cm away from the wall or fence. Remove the plant from its pot, gently tease out the roots and place in the hole. Make sure the top of root ball is at soil level – don’t plant it too deep. Then backfill with soil, firm down and water in.

Tie stems to short bamboo canes at 45 degree angles from the wall. This will keep the plant upright and give it vital support when spring comes around.

Finally, cover the soil with a layer of mulch to suppress weeds and hold in water. You can put a trellis or other support system up in spring if the plant needs it.

How to prune climbers

Many established climbing plants can soon get out of hand. Proper pruning will not only keep them in check, it will encourage stronger regrowth and better flowering.

Prune deciduous climbers in autumn once flowering is finished. But there’s always one exception – prune late-flowering clematis in spring!

Evergreen climbers should be pruned after flowering has finished. Often, these only need a light pruning to keep them in shape.

Before you start pruning, determine the overall shape you want and keep this in mind as a guide. Then remove any weak stems or those that are growing in the wrong direction.

Prune the hardier stems more lightly – they give the plant structure and keep the vine strong over winter. Just a tidy up will suffice.

How to tie climbing plants to supports

Many climbing plants need support to keep growing upwards. After you have pruned the plant, check its supports and repair any damage. Trellis should be firmly fixed to the wall or fence.

Check that ties are not cutting into the stems. This can damage the plant, so loosen them to allow it to grow.

Tie stems into supports to hold them up, and to train the plant in the direction you want it to grow. Keep standing back to check the shape.

Protect climbers over winter

Most climbing plants are hardy, but varieties like passion flower can be vulnerable in the cold weather.

Put down a thick layer of bark chip mulch to protect roots from frost. It will rot down and deliver loads of nutrients into the soil. It also suppresses weeds and reduces water loss.
