This year, National Gardening Week celebrates ‘Edible Britain’ which hopes to encourage the country to share their love of home-grown grub and inspire the next generation of gardeners.

- Radishes, carrots and tasty tomatoes can all be grown in pots and will add a healthy dose to your diet. But, for me, beetroots truly trump all the other container crops as they’re loaded with antioxidants—and you can even eat the leaves as a spinach substitute.
- If floor space is limited, just grow vertically instead. Sow lettuce ‘Lollo Rosa’ in intervals with one or two seeds to a pot less, sown an inch deep. Once your confidence is climbing, try your hand at crunchy cucumber or satisfying squash like ‘Tromboncino’ for the ultimate trellis test.

- It’s always an idea to plant for purpose. Mint is one of my favourite herbs because it’s so versatile, can been grown in window boxes and will lift lamb dishes a treat. Pre-sown seed mats can be a simple way of getting started—take a look at my Mr Fothergill’s herb collection mats for a blanket of basil, coriander, chives mint and parsley seedlings that sprout within a month.
- For fruit fanatics, try cherry, pear and peach trees like self-fertile ‘Bonanza’ cultivar, positioned on a sunny patio, for a deck decorated with ripe fruit for the picking. Strawberries are also great for kids because of their bright red colour, juicy texture and sweetness—you can even get planting them in hanging baskets!

1. Nutritious nuts: Did you know that peanuts, hazelnuts, sweet chestnuts, and walnuts can be grown in the UK? There’s a nut out there for every soil type and you can plant peanuts now—they’ll be ready to harvest in 120 days. Else, go nuts with low-maintenance hazel trees like a sunny spot that’s partially shaded, while almonds can produce crops of nuts when trained against a sunny structure.

Hedgehogs, mice and other small mammals are at risk of falling into ponds, but this can easily be prevented. Simply incorporate a gentle slope such as a plank with grip runs into one side of the pond, or even create a shallow area with pebbles. This will likely attract birds to bathe as well!

Delicate Fritillaria Meleagris, otherwise known as snake’s head fritillary or chequered daffodil, will add a touch of vibrancy to your garden. Their varying purple and white colouring makes them even more special for a spring time display. Being native to damp meadows, like hay meadows, as their natural habitat they grow best in moist soil. I would suggest adding in some leaf mould to help nurture the flower steadily throughout its growth. It will also aid in retaining the moisture of your soil which is vital for this flower to flourish. They typically grow to 30cm by 8cm so planting them in the autumn months from September to November with other late bloomers such as Narcissus (daffodil) will allow for a full blossom in spring.

More prevalent than the Fritillaria meleagris, but still just as wild, the English bluebell is a vital flower for attracting bees in spring. Coming across them naturally in the wild is becoming more infrequent.

In 2015, they were voted Britain’s favourite wildflower and it’s not hard to see why as they possess a lot of useful qualities for your garden, are easy to grow in trickier spots and spread quickly.

Primula vulgaris possess sweetheart shaped petals in subtle shades of white, pink and pale yellows. Their Latin name is derived from ‘Primula’, meaning ‘first’, which is symbolised in their early spring bloom. Whereas, ‘Vulgaris’ translated means ‘common’ and they are one of the more frequent wildflowers seen across Britain. The common primrose will display a bold yellow centre similar to that of an egg yolk, contrasting to the creamier shade on the outer part of its petals.

With its sweet scent, primrose is great for enticing night moths as well as bees. Night moths are actually contribute to their pollination—providing a similar service feeding on the nectar of the flower and helping to disperse pollen.

On a dry day with a light wind, I run a hoe over beds or between rows to kill weed seedlings. These seedlings will dry out on the surface of the bed rather than re-rooting into moist soil or being blown elsewhere.

Tools

Hand weeding is easiest on lighter soils. And should only be attempted where it will not disturb the roots of garden plants. With persistent weeds, such as bindweed or couch grass, small root sections can be left behind and grow again. Use a corkscrew weeder that can reach deep down into the soil. Whereas, a weeding knife has a hooked end. A useful tool for weeding between paving slabs and along path edging.

Deep organic mulches, such as bark or wood chip, can be used as a weed barrier that will smother weeds around plants— I keep them topped up to a minimum depth of 10-15cm to smother established annual weeds.

Groundcover or landscaping fabrics can be laid over recently cleared soil to suppress the re-growth of old weeds and prevent new weeds from establishing. Find the fabric for your needs and this can be a really effective way to keep weeds at bay without resorting to chemical weedkillers.

Begin revamping your lawn by clearing it free from debris. I rake up leaf and vegetation, even dead grass to make room for new grass growth to access the sunlight.

Rake

Now’s the time to get stuck into weeding as well. Removing weeds prior to mowing will prevent weeds seeds from being spread by the mower. Any moss growth can be scarified using a lightweight spring-tine rake.

In the height of summer, mowing should occur once or twice a week. You want to keep the grass at one inch high. And don’t forget to remove the leftover grass cuttings afterward or they’ll block out the sun.

With a nicely trimmed lawn, you can tidy up the hard to reach areas and borders using an edging iron to finish off the look. During growing season, you can also de-thatch and aerate your lawn. This allows for a better oxygen supply and therefore growth. Plus this will also promote better drainage and help you avoid any compacted areas.

It’s a win-win.

Potatoes are a summer favourite of mine. Super simple to grow, they thrive when planted in the warmer months as they need a higher soil temperature of above 7 degrees Celsius to flower.

They favour a crumbling soil, not doing well in damp moist soil which we should be well rid of by May.

Chitting

‘Chitting’ is a common term used in potato cultivation. I like to think of the term as having a little chit chat with my spud-tacular friends. Waking them up and encouraging the seeds to sprout early. If you do this in the colder months, you will yield a quicker harvest when it comes to planting in May. Chitting begins once the seed potatoes have been exposed to a warm environment. And you’ve probably seen this process begin with potatoes left in a cupboard for too long.

It’s best to invest in a specialised seed tuber from your local garden centre, as cheaper supermarket ones are susceptible to developing high levels of diseases.

Pop your seed potatoes in an egg bowl to keep them upright until they’re ready. Once the shoots are around 3cm long, they can be planted out.

Mounding

At this point, a process called ‘mounding’ is the secret is to keep the foliage away from the actual potatoes underground. This is where you pile earth over the emerging shoots to encourage upwards growth.

If this is done correctly, your potatoes will be ready to harvest in a few months. But it largely depends on the planting time of the seed tuber you’ve opted for. So read the packet’s instruction for more information.
