Nerines are bulbs which came originally from South Africa and, as a result, many are not fully hardy. But the great news is that bowdenii can be grown outside, ideally at the base of a warm, sunny wall.  ‘Alba’ starts to flower from early autumn and continues well into November, producing elegant, pure-white star-shaped flowers which also make great cut flowers. The bulbs will naturally build up over time, so if you want to divide clumps, this is best done during the spring months.

This Japanese maple is a wonderful specimen tree for year-round interest.  It looks particularly beautiful at this time of the year when the bark and stems turn a gorgeous shade of coral red and stay this colour throughout the entire winter months.  Come spring, pink-tinged young shoots appear which turn a cheerful shade of lime green before finally turning to gold in the autumn months. Just ensure it’s placed in a sheltered position in free draining soil as it really dislikes waterlogged soil and wind.

There are hundreds of different varieties of this easy to grow perennial with loads of different leaf colours to choose from. For example, this cultivar has deeply dark, almost black leaves, that grow in a neat dome shape. In fact, it makes a fantastic backdrop for white flowered snowdrops and looks best planted front of border or in containers.

Next is a ‘sasanqua’ camellia which produces their pretty flowers during the autumn and early winter months. Therefore, they are a great addition to the garden at this time of year. ‘Cleopatra’ starts to produce its pretty, yellow-eyed pink flowers in October and usually continues producing them into December. It can be grown as a specimen or plant several to create a dense hedge or screen. To get the best flowering make sure the plant gets watered well during dry spells and feed it mid-spring and again in June with a balanced liquid fertiliser.

It’s hard to resist a plant with such a cheerful name as ‘Winter Sun’. True to its name, it should produce cheerful bright yellow, scented flowers from this time of the year right the way through to spring. It’s a shade lover and its glossy leaves, combined with its bright colour flowers, make it the ideal choice for brightening up a dull shady area of the garden during the winter months. Give it plenty of sideways space because the leaves will spread once established. For extra interest, plant snowdrops and spring flowering bulbs around its base.

Then, there’s this UK native shrub that comes into its own at this time of year. The leaves turn glorious shades of red and the seed-heads develop a wonderful shade of pink with orange interiors. These brightly coloured seed-heads stay on the tree long after the leaves have dropped, therefore prolonging the season of interest. This is another shrub that looks great with spring flowering bulbs planted all around the base of its stem.

This is a beautiful, evergreen shrub that produces clusters of delicious night-scented orange, wonderful looking flowers from the summer months all the way through to November. However, be careful because it is classified as a half hardy plant which means it will only take cold temperatures down to around minus 5C maximum. But, in colder areas it grows very well inside a conservatory where you may be lucky and have it in flower for all 12 months of the year.

This compact, hardy shrub is another easy to grow evergreen that provides year-round interest. The feathery leaves become pinkish-red during the spring, turning a deep, dark green from summer until autumn when they become a stunning bright crimson. Pretty white flowers bloom during the summer months followed by small berries that turn a cheerful red during the autumn.  It can be grown in full sun or part shade but will get the best autumn leaf colouring if grown in full sunlight.

Hollies are really easy to grow, whether it be in sun or shade. As long as you can give them a moist, well-drained soil. Another piece of good news is that they need minimal pruning. This variety has silver-cream edges and produces masses of bright red berries. Also, it’s very tolerant of pollution and salt, making it great for urban or coastal gardens.

Last but not least is this easy to care for, evergreen plant that’s a great addition to the winter garden. This variety is no exception with its handsome, red marked, mid-green leaves. During the spring and summer months the plant produces tall flower spikes of red-eyed, green flowers and grows into a neat mound, making it perfect for the smaller garden or border. Cutting back the flowered shoots down to the base during the spring months will encourage production of new shoots but best to wear gloves as the sap can cause skin irritation.

Through autumn and winter, we tend to get that feeling of wanting to wrap up indoors and stay cosy. We want to embrace the warmth of our home as we take a step closer to winter. It’s the same for some mammals, whose lifecycles involve hibernating as a period of dormancy every year.

When we think about hibernation, we imagine wildlife sleeping over winter, ready and restored in spring. But hibernation is in fact closer to death than sleeping, because it involves the functions of the body to be reduced quite a lot. For example, body temperatures drop, hear rates decrease to only a few beats a minute, and respiration slows so there are only a few breaths over the space of a couple of minutes.

However, it’s not just a catch-all term for every animal that go dormant over the colder months. In fact, there are only three mammals in the UK that are true hibernators. These are hedgehogs, bats, and dormice.

They’re true hibernators because strictly, hibernation is restricted to winter. Hibernations takes place to help the mammals to conserve energy during a time period where resources are low. This allows the mammals to use their stores of energy much slowly than if they didn’t hibernate.

Though the term hibernation is used interchangeably, ‘torpor’ is perhaps the term that is often referred to. Torpor is ‘a state of physical or mental inactivity’, which is dormancy with many interruptions. Amphibians enter torpor, which is like a semi-hibernation because it takes place for a shorter period of time.

Similarly, insects and sometimes fish and birds, enter a state called diapause. This is a period of ‘suspended development’. This can be triggered by changes in temperature, daylight, or availability of food and nutrients.

Between October and April, hedgehogs tend to go into hibernation. Although this can vary year-on-year depending on the weather. During these colder months, hedgehogs spend their time in log piles, compost heaps, within piles of dead leaves, or under garden sheds.

As preparation for hibernation, hedgehogs build up their energy store and increase their weight by eating plenty of beetles, worms, and caterpillars during summer.

    Dormice

Likewise, dormice hibernate between October and May. They hibernate in their underground burrows. Not only will they be able to conserve energy whilst resources are low, but it’ll protect them from predators.

Therefore, this long period of hibernation means they are hidden from view and will increase chances of survival. Like hedgehogs, dormice will increase their body weight ready for hibernation. Then, during hibernation, they lose half of their body weight.

    Bats

Around November, bats leave the roosting site and make their way to hibernate. The hibernation site is called a hibernaculum and can either be a bat box in the garden, a cave, a roof, or even the hollow of a tree.

During the period of hibernation, bats amazingly drop their heartbeat to 20 beats per minute. In one minute, they also take approximately five breaths.

In April, their hibernation ends. Bats do wake up occasionally for a short period to rid waste and stock up on food if necessary.

    Other animals

There are other animals that have short hibernation-like periods, or torpor. For example, badgers go into this state for around 29 hours cycles. They do this when food sources are low or the weather is harsh and dangerous.

So, now you know about garden wildlife who hibernate over the colder months, how can you help them out?

Firstly, providing enough places for shelter, and extra food sources is a great start. With wild areas of fallen leaves, homemade or store-bought hedgehog houses, bat boxes, or bug hotels are handy for welcoming wildlife.

If you know you’ve got a hedgehog hibernating in your garden, supplying fresh food and water is wise. Put out a bowl of good quality cat or dog food or some cat biscuits and plenty of water to drink. Remember to clean up any uneaten food daily and wash up the dish it was placed in.

Bear in mind that if you disturb a hibernating animal by accident, don’t move or try to wake it. Instead, cover it and leave it be.

Then, come spring, when the sun is shining and the weather starts to warm, hibernating mammals will come back out.

There is nothing quite like the sweet scent of honeysuckle when it’s in full bloom. Especially when it hangs in the air on a still, warm, summer’s evening. You want to make the most out of this wonderful plant, and if that means moving it, here are my tips on how to transplant honeysuckle.

Climbing honeysuckle is the perfect choice for a cottage garden, or indeed any informal, relaxed garden style with the open, loose habit of their long twining stems. However, it’s those long stems that can ramble great distances and entwine unsuspecting trees and shrubs growing nearby.

So, here’s the solution if you find yourself in the position where you’re constantly cutting back long stems. It’s much better to move it to a position where it can freely express itself without overrunning other plants.

For deciduous varieties, it’s good time of the year to move it – just after the leaves have fallen and before they regrow in early spring.

With evergreen varieties, the windows of opportunity are this month when the soil is still warm, or March when the soil starts to warm up again.

First, work out exactly where you’re going to move the honeysuckle to. Dig out the planting hole in advance. Then, loosen the soil around the hole, because you may find the roots are longer than you thought they might be.

Water the soil around the plant the day before you intend to dig it up.

If possible, gather up as many of the stems as possible and tie them in so that you don’t end up in a big tangle.

Have an empty compost bag ready to put the root ball of the plant into as soon as you’ve dug it up. This is because the plant roots hate to dry out.

    Digging out the honeysuckle

When digging out the plant, keep as much of the rootball undisturbed as possible. If you can’t dig out all the thick roots, cut them with secateurs or a sharp pruning knife.

Put the rootball of the plant into the bag as soon as you’ve dug it out and keep the roots covered whilst moving it.

If you’re unable to replant it immediately then put compost around the roots in the bag and store it somewhere dark and cool, like a garage. Do this until you’re able to plant it, adding some water, but not too much.

    Replanting honeysuckle

Next, place the plant in the pre-prepared hole, carefully spreading out the roots. You may find you need to widen the hole to fit all the roots in. If so, put the plant back into the bag whilst you widen the planting hole to prevent roots drying out.

Make sure the planting hole isn’t too deep or shallow. A good trick is to lay a bamboo cane across the planting hole with the plant in it. If you’ve got the depth correct the old soil-mark should be flush with the planting hole and the cane. Take the time to get this right, as planting too deeply can often kill the plant. On the other hand, planting too high means some of the roots will die off and the plant take longer to re-establish.

Next, pack soil firmly into and around the planting hole using clenched fists, pushing the soil down all around the root ball.

Water the base of the plant well. Keep the hose or watering can low to the soil so that the water goes down into the roots rather than over the stems.

It’s a good idea to add a layer of mulch. This could be garden compost, well-rotted manure or chipped bark, on the soil around the plant after watering in. This helps reduce water loss from the soil around the roots and helps keep weed competition away.
