    Delicate Fritillaria Meleagris, otherwise known as snake’s head fritillary or chequered daffodil, will add a touch of vibrancy to your garden. Their varying purple and white colouring makes them even more special for a spring time display. These distinctive checkerboard markings will add subtle flashes of colour to any green space when peppered about the garden.

    The pendent shaped flower heads add a touch of drama to any border or grassy setting. They’re perfect woodland additions and have such delicate stems that they are so named because the nodding flower head is said to resemble a snake.

    Being native to damp meadows, like hay meadows, as their natural habitat they grow best in moist soil. I would suggest adding in some leaf mould to help nurture the flower steadily throughout its growth. It will also aid in retaining the moisture of your soil which is vital for this flower to flourish. They typically grow to 30cm by 8cm so planting them in the autumn months from September to November with other late bloomers such as Narcissus (daffodil) will allow for a full blossom in spring.

    More prevalent than the Fritillaria meleagris, but still just as wild, the English bluebell is a vital flower for attracting bees in spring. Coming across them naturally in the wild is becoming more infrequent.

    In 2015, they were voted Britain’s favourite wildflower and it’s not hard to see why as they possess a lot of useful qualities for your garden, are easy to grow in trickier spots and spread quickly.

    Plant in moist well drained soil during September and they will bloom early, producing a subtle, yet distinctive scent akin to honey. They can equally be planted under trees—a great way to entice not only bees, but butterflies and hoverflies too.

    Or coat a patch of lawn in glorious shades of blues and violets. Once purchased, plant straight away to avoid decay as the bluebell bulbs are vulnerable to this when not in soil.

    Primula vulgaris possess sweetheart shaped petals in subtle shades of white, pink and pale yellows. Their Latin name is derived from ‘Primula’, meaning ‘first’, which is symbolised in their early spring bloom. Whereas, ‘Vulgaris’ translated means ‘common’ and they are one of the more frequent wildflowers seen across Britain. The common primrose will display a bold yellow centre similar to that of an egg yolk, contrasting to the creamier shade on the outer part of its petals.

    With its sweet scent, primrose is great for enticing night moths as well as bees. Night moths are actually contribute to their pollination—providing a similar service feeding on the nectar of the flower and helping to disperse pollen.

    Common primrose cultivars have the ability to self-pollinate, but it’s always a great to plant with the aim to attract these helpful insects around the garden.

    More of an early spring bloomer, with their brilliant bright yellows, they will be the first to add a burst of sunshine to your back garden. Scatter the seeds onto the surface of your compost during mid-September to October with some added leaf mould to retain moisture.

    The name ‘Scilla siberica’ suggests that the plant hails from Siberia but it is actually native to the warmer climates found in Crimea (near Ukraine) and Northwest Iran. It is hardy to most weather conditions across the UK.

    Scilla siberica bulbs should be planted in early autumn in a fertile soil of loam, sand or chalk. Ensure the soil is well drained and place it in a position of full sun or partial shade.

    It is the perfect plant to add spring colour to borders, cottage and rock gardens and will also thrive when planted in grass.

    Forsythia is an interesting plant that becomes a visual masterpiece in spring. It has slender branches that explode with simple, but powerful flowers, in rich shades of yellow and gold. One species, the Forsythia suspensa, is a great example of the colourful beauty exhibited and has the appropriate nickname ‘golden bells’. It is native to eastern Asia, but widely grown throughout the world.

    For a long time, it was thought that Forsythia was the only plant that could produce lactose, a sugar that is found in milk. However, more recent tests failed to find any trace and the existence of lactose in the plant is still disputed.

    The genus was actually renamed after Scottish botanist William Forsyth, who was a founding member of the RHS and a relative of the popular entertainer Bruce Forsyth.

    Forsythia should be grown in a moist but well-drained soil that is in a full-sun position.

    Popularly known as Common Lungwort, this perennial can be semi-evergreen or herbaceous has several peculiar and fun features. The green foliage consists of broad green leaves spattered with dainty white spots and the small clusters of pink flowers change miraculously into blue as the spring season advances. Like the other two in this list, Pulmonaria officinalis is hardy to most weather conditions in the UK.

    Through the ages, Lungwort has been used to treat a number of ailments, including respiratory infections, reducing irritation and as a digestive aid.

    Historically, doctors and botanists in the middle-ages believed that plants that resembled certain body parts were good for treating problems with them and since lungwort was thought to look like the lungs, it was widely used to treat coughs and other pulmonary or chest-related illnesses.

    Modern medicine tends to avoid the direct use of lungwort, as there is little scientific research into the benefits it has.

    Lungwort is a great beginner plant and is easy to grow. Plant in a sheltered position in hummus-rich soil that is fertile and moist but not waterlogged. It needs either full or partial-shade in order to thrive and is perfect for bushy ground cover.

    As the nights begin to draw in and we see our outdoor spaces more often showered in moonlight, rather than sunlight, we needn’t miss the amazing opportunity to transform our gardens into a spectacular midnight wonder.

    Time of day

    Many people do not get the opportunity to experience their gardens during the bright of day and re-designing the garden to fit the evenings is a great way to make the most of an otherwise, unappreciated space. It’s not difficult to do and with a couple of additions here and there, your garden could be as intriguing at night as it is during the day.

    In the UK the clocks back on the last Sunday in October and with that in mind, come over to the dark side with my great tips and advice for creating your own amazing moonlight garden.

    The secret to bringing out the best of the garden at night is to plant flowers that will shimmer delightfully when the moon and the stars are beaming down on them. Plants with a silvery colour will reflect the moonlight, creating a superb visual display.

    Attract moonlight

    Plant Senecio cineraria ‘Cirrus’, also known as silver ragwort, to draw the moonlight into your garden. It works best when nestled in between other taller plants, adding allure-in-depth to borders and beds.

    Similarly, the silver matt forming Cerastium tomentosum or dusty miller, will serve the same purpose but with the added bonus of small star-shaped white flowers that are absolutely beautiful. My favourite silver plant for the garden of the night would have to be the Athyrium noponicum ‘Silver Falls’, which is a deciduous fern that just looks amazing once the sun has gone down.

    Stand out

    Plants with white flowers will stand out vividly in the darkness and look great, both during the day, and during the night.

    The beautiful Osteospermum ‘Glistening White’ is a perfect example, with silky pure white flowers, contrasted by a mysteriously dark pistil in the centre.

    To add a splash of shining white to a border, Orlaya grandiflora, also known as white lace flower, is your go-to hardy annual. Its lacy blooms are bursting with intricate detail, that also makes a brilliant addition to cut flower arrangements.

    For something with a bit more height, try the Clematis ‘Miss Bateman’, which is a climbing plant with delicate white flowers and fiery red stamens.

    To make these plants stand out even more, seek a dark background in the form of a Taxus baccata (Yew) hedge. Yew hedging is easy to care for and will become the perfect dark backdrop for any moonlight garden, providing it doesn’t block the light.

    Decorative stones, paving and rockeries can really bolster the appearance of a night garden. Light coloured cobbles, slate and other stone formations can reflect in the moonlight and will stand out amongst the darkness, creating formidable and attractive reference points.
