Herbs are a must for every garden. They look good, they smell good and they do you good! Most herbs are easy to grow and make an excellent addition to your cooking.

There is always a wide choice of herb plants to buy from garden centres and nurseries, or even in pots from the supermarket. Or grow your own from seed.

Herb type

Herbs are ornamental plants and can be annual or perennial. Annuals last just one year and include basil, coriander, marjoram and parsley.

Perennials regrow every year. Perennial herbs include fennel, mint and thyme, as well as woody perennials like sage, lavender and rosemary. The odd one out is of course chives, which are a bulb from the onion family.

Planting

You can grow herbs in containers or pots on the patio, in a formal herb garden or even among your ornamental plants in a bed or border. They also make great hanging basket plants

Some herbs, like mint and lemon balm, are fast-growing and very vigorous. They can take over herb garden or container, so it’s a good idea to actually plant them in their original pot to contain the roots.

Most herbs thrive best in full sun which helps them produce the highest levels of essential oils but some, like rocket, parsley and chervil are fine in the shade.

For me, the best place to grow herbs is near the back door. They smell wonderful on a hot summer’s day and they’ll be readily available when you’re in the kitchen.

Growing

Once the plants have established, they need regular watering. You can also give them a liquid feed once a week during the growing season. Make sure you pick from them regularly to encourage new growth of fresh leaves.

In the autumn, annual herbs will die off and they can be discarded. Perennial herbs such as mint, oregano and thyme will also die back, but they will grow again in spring. They should be protected from frost during the winter.

Herbal tea

One of my favourite things to do with home-grown herbs is to make herbal tea using lemon balm, mint, sage leaves or camomile flowers. Pick about five or six leaves of your chosen herb and gently crush them in a clean paper towel. Then add to a cup or teapot and pour on boiling water.

Make sure you cover the mixture – this will ensure that the beneficial essential oils don’t evaporate with the steam. Leave to stand for at least five minutes and strain. Sweeten with honey if necessary.

Grow Swiss chard in containers

You don’t need an allotment to grow your own veg. You don’t need a large garden, or a designated veg patch.

All you need to enjoy the taste of fresh veg at home is a few tubs.

There are loads of crops that thrive in containers. You can grow them on patios, balconies, windowsills, driveways and in conservatories.

Tomatoes are the first one that springs to mind. They are nearly always grown in growbags, and smaller varieties work well in hanging baskets. But why stop there? Get growing carrots, beetroot, potatoes, salad leaves and dwarf French beans in containers!

Getting started

Potatoes need deep containers

The type and size of container depends on the crop you wish to grow. Underground veg like carrots and potatoes need deep soil, so choose a tall container. Salads, beans, peas and beetroot need less depth, so you can use something wider and shallower.

Pick the right spot for the container before you fill it with peat-free compost and plants as it may be too heavy to move. Choose a sunny, sheltered position – ripening vegetables don’t like to be in the shade.

Make sure you have plenty of drainage material like rocks, gravel and broken pottery at the bottom of the container before adding any soil or peat-free compost. This will ensure good drainage and prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged, which will rot the roots.

Once you’ve planted up your container with young vegetable plants, spread a layer of mulch on the surface of the soil to help retain moisture and keep weeds at bay.

Container-grown vegetables will need a little more attention than those in the garden. Make sure you feed and water the plants regularly. Stake the plants where necessary to give support and keep a vigilant lookout for pests and disease.

You’ll need to water daily, especially in warmer weather to ensure the soil doesn’t dry out. Vegetable plants need to have a frequent supply of water and nutrients to produce that tasty veg!

Pest control

There are always unwelcome visitors on the lookout for your young vegetable plants so pest protection is paramount.Try using natural measures to control the slugs like sticking a ring of self-adhesive copper tape around the containers. Slugs won’t cross this material because it gives them a small electric shock. Or setting beer traps.

Or sprinkle a ring of sharp grit or crushed eggshells around the base of the plants or around the containers themselves to deter slugs and snails.

Check regularly for caterpillars which may appear on the underside of the leaves and remove them by hand (wear gloves if you don’t want to touch them!)

You can even deter bugs with some clever planting! Put a few marigolds among your tomato plants to deter whitefly.

Or try planting several different vegetables in the same container as this seems to confuse pests. For instance, plant spring onions alongside lettuce and carrots.

More and more of us are growing our own veg for lots of different reasons. The cost of food keeps rising, and people are becoming more concerned with food miles and the use of commercial pesticides.

But most importantly, we all want the vegetables we eat to be as fresh and tasty as possible. And nothing tastes as good as veg you’ve grown you’re your own hands. With a little effort, you will literally reap the rewards!

Always fancied having your own fruit tree but don’t have space for an orchard? Use a container!

There are so many varieties that will thrive in a pot, and you can move them inside when it gets cold to protect them from our British climate. All you need is a patio or balcony to put it on.

Choosing your tree

Pick a dwarf tree or small bush which won’t be constrained by the size of your pot. You can grow almost any fruit: pears, peaches, oranges, nectarines. If you want to grow apples, try a ballerina tree – a variety that produces fruit all the way up the stem. Don’t just stop at trees though. Shrubs like blueberries, raspberries and gooseberries grow well in containers.

Make sure you choose varieties of tree and shrub that are self-fertile and will pollinate themselves – it’s much better if you’re short on space.

Choosing your pot

Make your pot the biggest you can fit in the space available. There are three advantages to bigger pots – they hold more food, more water and have more space for strong root growth. If you’ve got a very large container, you can always under-plant the tree with strawberries to make the most of the space.

Make sure there are several holes in the bottom of your container to ensure that excess water will drain away. Then pop some crocks in the bottom. These are solid objects that stop the compost blocking the drainage holes. You can use anything from gravel and broken pottery to blocks of polystyrene.

Planting

Fill your container with a loam-based potting compost. Remove the tree from its original pot and plant it in your container to the same depth – making sure it’s not too deep. Give it a good watering – the compost may settle down, in which case it will need topping up. Then just put in a light spot and water when the compost is dry.

Soon you’ll be able to enjoy your own home-grown fruit! Nothing in the world tastes as good.
