Seven activities for the family at Halloween

Autumn is a great time to collect up bits and bobs from the garden to create Halloween decorations and accessories.

Here are a few of my favourite things to get stuck into as a family over the Halloween period.

1) Apple bobbing

A Halloween favourite! Fill up a large bucket with water, and pick some apples from your apple tree.

You need enough apples to just cover the surface. Get the family together and give everyone 20 seconds to grab an apple with their mouth! No hands are allowed.

The winner is the person who picks an apple up the quickest. This best works outside because it can get quite wet on the ground.

If you choose to do it inside, use towels or tarpaulin and preferably do it on an easy-to-clean floor!

2) Pumpkin carving

This is probably the most popular Halloween activity, carving pumpkins is fun for all the family.

1 -Cut off the crown of the pumpkin (save this bit!)

2- Scoop out the contents using a large spoon (keep the flesh & Seeds, I’ve written an article on what you can do with them)

3- Draw an outline of the face on the pumpkin and cut out the eyes, nose and mouth with a knife, you could get the kids to do the drawing and you to do the cutting!

4- Cut a couple of holes in the top to let the burnt air out so it does not collect in the pumpkin and put your candle out

5- Place a tealight inside and pop the lid back on

3) Make a magic wand

1 – Get hold of a thick stick from the garden – the more crooked, the better!

2 – Strip it of side branches and leaves

3 – Collect up some twine and wrap it round the base of the stick, secure it with some glue or a knot

You could also paint the stick before wrapping the twine around it if you want it to have a particular look! If you choose to paint it, try to take as much bark off as possible, and perhaps sand the stick down for a smooth, paintable surface.

4) Make a broomstick

Get together and build a broomstick, perfect for the wizard and witches outfits! You will need a long, thick stick or branch, some straw, twine or string and some scissors or a knife.

1 – If using a branch, strip the bark off and give it a few days to dry

2- Divide the straw into equal bunches and tie up with the twine

3 -Tie all of the bundles to the end of the branch using twine or string. You can also play around with the bunches before tying them to see whether you’d rather a flat broom or one that sprays out, like a whisk

4- Once attached, cut the ends of the straw so it’s all even

5) Pumpkin apple stamps

1- Pick some apples from your apple tree

2- Get hold of some orange and green paint

3- Cut the apples in half and fully dry them with a paper towel

4- Squirt some orange paint onto a paper, or a dish and fully cover the inside of the apple, then stamp onto another piece of paper to create a pumpkin shape!

5- Use the green paint and a paintbrush (or your fingers!) to create the leaves and stems of the pumpkins

The kids will love doing this and once dried will be able to hang them around the house for Halloween decorations!

6) Create a Halloween tree

If you have any dead branches or twigs, this is a great activity to do with the kids to create some Halloween decorations for inside and outside the house. The more materials you can get hold of to create this the better.

1 – First, stick the dead branches into an old flower pot filled with dirt

2 – Use some cotton or raw wool and create mini ‘ghosts’ to fill the tree with

3- Orange baubles work really well as pumpkins, or you could cut out your pumpkin stamps from earlier, and hang them on with string

4- You could use black paper, cut it into the shape of bats or spiders and hang those from the tree too!

7) Flower pot creatures

Empty flower pots are great to make lots of different spooky creatures. Make spiders by turning a pot upside down and sticking pipe cleaners to the side of the pots with a glue gun, or drilling small holes in plastic pots for the pipe cleaners to thread into. Stick or paint some eyes and a mouth on the front and they’ll look great and fun for decoration inside or outside. You can also create a vampire bat by sticking black wings and ears on the top and sides!

Treat your garden right at this time of year and it can serve as a real haven for helpful hibernators.

Frogs, toads, ladybirds and hedgehogs are garden bouncers that protect plants from slug, caterpillar and aphid invasions, so helping these garden friends out during winter is a really worthwhile job.

The name for ‘hedgehog’ comes from ‘hedge’, because of their foraging habits, and ‘hog’, because they eat like pigs and have a voracious appetite!

Hedgehogs eat oodles of slugs and caterpillars in a season but at this time of year their natural food sources can become scarce.

Since they really need to stock up on food before they hibernate for the winter, putting food out for hedgehogs at this time of year really helps these beneficial creatures to build up the fat stores they need to keep warm while hibernating.

A lot has been said about what to feed hedgehogs over the years but the British Hedgehog Preservation Society says that there’s only a handful of things that are really suitable. Choose meaty cat or dog food in white meat flavours, such as turkey or chicken, and ensure it’s in jelly instead of gravy, which is salty.

Pop this out in a shallow dish and—if you’re worried about curious local cats and foxes clearing the plate, cover it with an upturned under bed storage box with a 13cm² entrance cut into the side. This allows hedgehogs—and only hedgehogs—to get at the grub.

You can also put out specialist hedgehog food which is available these days from most garden centres. A shallow saucer of fresh water is the perfect hedgehog drink for washing down the chow.

Please never feed hedgehogs milk or bread as these can make them sick and dehydrate them—exactly the opposite of what they need before a hibernation sleep!

Once hedgehogs are suitably fed, it’s time for them to find a cosy dwelling for the winter months. You can buy a hedgehog house or, if you’re in the mood for a little DIY with the kids, you can make your own relatively easily.

I normally head down to the wine merchant and pick up some large (30–40cm) wooden wine crates to transform into a home. An upturned wine crate with a 13cm² doorway nestled amongst old log piles, straw and leaves makes the ideal hedgehog home. Leave the bedding materials outside, mind, as these creatures like to do their own interior design and decoration.

You can make the perfect home for these helpful hibernators.

Of course, you’ll need to make sure hedgehogs have access to your garden first. Cut ‘hedgehog highways’ into the bottom of fence panels or instal hedges as boundaries, which allow free movement between gardens.

If you’re planning a bonfire for Guy Fawkes’ Night, be sure to check that no hedgehogs have crawled into the pile thinking it’s a great spot for hibernation before you light it.

You can do this by lifting the bonfire with blunt broom handles, examining the bonfire thoroughly using a torch, or by re-sighting the bonfire immediately before you light it.

Another good idea is to light bonfires from one side only, so that any hedgehogs who might have gone unnoticed can escape from the other side.

Other helpful hibernators include amphibians like newts, frogs and toads, which also eat buckets of crop-munching insects. If you have a pond nearby, these creatures are likely also in the area and they’ll be planning on going into hibernation shortly. They love to hide under rocks as they go into their long winter sleep. I normally turn a terracotta pot on its side and bury half of it, side-on, into the ground like a hut.

Cram in twigs and leaves and it makes a great sheltered spot for these creatures over winter. If you don’t have a pond at home, look at installing one now to get ready for next year.

If you don’t have small children at home, they’re marvellous to have in the garden both for amphibians and for birds and hedgehogs to drink from, providing a source of water all year round.

Install a pond with sloping sides to allow creatures to escape easily and check regularly at this time of year to ensure it hasn’t frozen over, making water inaccessible.

If frozen, use a hot kettle to thaw the water as smashing it can harm pond inhabitants. Alternatively, leave a tennis ball floating on the surface, which will leave a natural space if the ice covers the rest—then creatures will still have a breathing hole.

Our often-overlooked pals, insects like stag beetles and ladybirds, also need to hibernate during winter. To help them, simply leave a bit of your garden untidy!

It works particularly well left at the back of your plot, underneath a hedge or tucked round behind the garage. Add in a few leaves, stacked logs, or terracotta pots on their side.

Ladybirds will eat around 5,000 aphids in their lifetime so are marvellous to have in the garden.

I pick up a few pinecones on a woodland walk—ones that have opened work best—and then stuff them into netted fruit bags from the shopping.

Simply leave them in sheltered parts of the garden to help the ladybirds to help you.

Be careful not to leave them too low or ground-based critters, like hedgehogs, might get caught up in them.

But it just goes to show that you don’t have to spend a lot to support the natural habitat for some many garden-friendly hibernators this winter.

Acers (maple) are known for their distinctive shaped leaves coming in a variety of hues, from beautiful burgundy to sandy yellows. For a smaller space opt for the Japanese maple that are ideal for growing in containers. Potted up, these miniature trees offer a dramatic red foliage-perfect for any autumn garden.

Deciduous

Being deciduous trees and shrubs, leaf drop can begin from late November. As maples lose their leaves every autumn, they are best situated away from strong winds that can prematurely cause their leaves to fall. If your tree does become damaged by the gales, create a circle of mulch around its base. This will help protect it from the cold whilst in recovery.

Woodland

These make a fantastic choice for woodland gardens. Really standing out and looking striking when planted alongside other oriental shrubbery, such as winter loving holly and pine. Cultivars such as Acer saccharum (sugar maple tree) have ornamental bark and the leaves of this species are primarily used to create sweet maple syrup.

Often described as queen of the winter flowers, while the rest of your garden lies dormant, Camellias offer colour and a majestic presence to your plot through the colder months. A gorgeous evergreen if ever there was one, whether planting in October or in spring, they are a splendid sight to behold.

Established

They are best established this time of year before soil has a chance to get too cold. Planting in warm moist soil will help their roots to establish similar conditions to their Chinese origins. Position in partial shade, out of the way from cold winds and bright morning sun.

Roots

Once roots have set in, species such as Camellia sasanqua will flourish in full sun. Often growing well in pots, they make for a great container plant. Always make sure not to over water to avoid root rot and instead give your Camellia water when the soil starts to feel dry, allowing it to fully reach the roots.

Nothing signals the start of autumn more than the spectacular Pyracantha (firethorn). Deep rich reds and golden oranges clump together to create a hedge of bountiful bronze berries. Pyracanthas are great for training against a garden fence or wall to create a stunning sheet of colour.

Plant

Plant roughly about 50cm from your surface area to stop the plant from drying out as this soil tends to be quite dry. Alternatively, these sublime shrubs can also be grown as part of a hedgerow.

Space

To adorn your outside space, try picking varieties such as ‘Orange Glow’ and Pyracantha coccinea ‘Red Star’ that truly create a burst of berries, bringing your garden to life. The birds will flock to the foliage and hoover up the berries as a winter food source, so site them well and you’ll have way to watch wildlife at work.
