Instant Impact: How to add instant colour to your borders

If you’ve got a bare spot or entire flower bed that’s empty, you need instant impact. Think of it as a blank canvas ready for you to fill with colour.

For a year-round effect, simply buy a perennial plant that’s in flower every month. You’ll have guaranteed flowers every day of the year.

You can buy many varieties of plant as mature specimens that are already in flower. These plants are strong and well-established but will still grow even bigger when you plant them.

Buying plants in bloom allows you to co-ordinate the colours effectively. And you will already know what the plant looks like in bloom, so there will be no disappointments later.

To plant a new bed, start by preparing the soil well. Dig it over to loosen it and remove any stones and weeds. You can also add some compost or other organic matter to enrich the soil.

Now design your planting scheme! Keep the plants in their pots and arrange them on the border to check everything looks right. Aim to get larger plants at the back, and lower growing varieties at the front.

Begin planting at the front and work backwards. Leave some space around the plants for them to grow without smothering each other.

Once everything is planted, all you need to do is relax and enjoy your new border!

Instant Impact: How to add instant colour to containers

But flower colour isn’t just confined to borders. Container gardening lets you grow flowers wherever you like.

For striking displays, choose larger pots. Firstly, this lets you grow bigger plants. Secondly, large pots hold more compost and more water, so your plants will be healthier and produce more flowers.

Line pots with crocks, which are stones or pieces of broken slate that stop soil from blocking up drainage holes. Then add a layer of general purpose compost.

Put your plant in the pot. It should sit so that the surface level of the rootball is flush with the top of the pot. You should never plant a rootball too deep and bury it or the plant may struggle to survive. Add more compost around the plant to fill in the gaps, firm in and water.

To recreate the striking effect in the video, choose one central plant that has a high stem and add bedding plants around the base. You can create any number of colour and flower combinations – the only limit is your imagination!

Pick plants that are in flower right now for instant colour, and give your garden some impact. It couldn’t be easier.

Container gardens are a fantastic way to grow plants. A collection of pots can lift a patio or front garden and brighten up walls and fences. Container gardening is ideal for people who have small spaces or city gardens, or even no garden at all! And it’s also perfect if your home is rented and you can’t dig over the garden.

With so many possibilities, it is a shame that container gardening is most often used to grow simple bedding plants. There are loads of ways to create a striking display with pots and planters. Here are five of my favourite.

Nothing says spring like bulbs. This is an incredible display of brightly coloured flowers that heralds the start of the growing season. There is a clever contrast between heights and colours, and the similar terracotta pots help to bring everything together.

Bulbs are great for containers and can be densely planted to give a fuller effect. Recreate this at home by planting taller varieties like tulips underneath shorter bulbs that flower earlier, like daffodils and muscari.

These are like container garden cauldrons – they have a bit of everything in! This is a shortcut to a striking display and provides so much interest. There is a mix of flowers, foliage, colour, size, shape and form. It could be chaotic but it really works.

The trick is to build everything around a tall central plant – a hardy geranium in this case. Plant smaller flowering varieties at three or four points around it, and fill in the gaps with leafy plants. Finally, allow trailing varieties to hang down around the edges.

Even though the two bowl containers are different sizes, the plants are repeated in both. There is a splash of orange and dark purple foliage to create cohesion. It’s a clever container garden for a long-lasting display.

Terracotta hosta

Break away from petunias with leafy green foliage. This is a cleverly co-ordinated display of hosta plants in terracotta pots that vary in size and shade. The wooden planters are also repeated throughout the design.

Aim for a variation in leaf colour, size and pattern to give a textural interest. I especially like the bluey tones that echo the blue-painted wooden trellis. Add variation to this with other leafy plants like herbs and salad leaves.

Tender and succulent

Succulents are fleshy plants that suit containers because they don’t mind poor soil or low moisture levels. They also make a great display with their futuristic shapes and pointy leaves. Create texture by planting varieties with different forms, patterns and colours.

Plant smaller succulents around the outside and cover the soil surface with a layer of gravel to improve water drainage. Succulents are also ideal for shallow containers.

Don’t forget about the pots! Interesting plant pots can turn a container garden into a striking feature. This container garden is so well-designed. It has a mixture of shapes, sizes, colours and finishes. The main colour scheme is blue, with white, sandstone and purple added in.

To recreate this look, choose a few anchor pots in a similar size, colour and finish like the three glazed ones. Then paint other pots and planters in neighbouring tones on the colour wheel. Keep the plants within the colour scheme too.

Sunflowers are happy, summery flowers and so easy to grow. This is a great garden project for children and adults alike. Kids love a competition to see who can grow the tallest sunflower!

Sunflowers are tall plants with big daisy-like flowers that come in yellow and red tones. They have brown centres that turn black as they develop into seed heads. They tilt their flower heads to follow the sun around the sky during the day.

Sunflowers are great for wildlife as many garden birds love to eat sunflower seeds. Or you can harvest them for yourself.

Grow sunflowers in full sun in a sheltered spot – preferably against a wall or fence. This protects the long stems from the wind so they don’t get blown over.

They prefer well-drained soil that’s rich in nutrients, so add some peat-free compost or slow-release fertiliser to the ground before you plant.

How to grow sunflowers

The easiest way to grow sunflowers is to sow them directly in the ground where you want to grow them! Dig over the soil and remove any weeds. Rake the surface to a fine crumbly texture. Sow the seeds 12mm deep and 45cm apart, and water in.

Sow seeds outdoors from mid-April to May when all risk of frost has passed. Keep the ground moist while the seeds germinate and protect seedlings from slugs.
You can put down barriers such as copper tape, set beer traps or physically remove slugs to keep them under control, or cut the bottoms off plastic bottles and use them to cover the seedlings.

How to sow sunflower seeds indoors

You can also sow sunflower seeds indoors first. Fill individual pots with seed peat-free compost and sow the seeds 12mm deep on their sides. Water well and keep somewhere warm until they germinate.

When the seedlings have two sets of leaves, begin hardening them off. Take the pots outside on warm days and bring back in at night. Continue this for a week to acclimatise the plants to outdoor conditions. Then plant them in prepared soil in the garden and water well.

How to care for sunflower plants

Make sure to water your sunflowers as they grow. Sunflowers have deep root systems, so once a week or less, thoroughly soak the soil around the roots to give the plants a boost.

As the plants grow taller, they may need staking to support the tall stems. Push a bamboo cane into the soil and loosely tie the stem to it. Check the ties don’t get too tight as the plant grows.

How to harvest the flowers

If you want to use the sunflowers in vases, cut them early in the morning and display in tall containers that support the flower heads. Change the water regularly to keep them fresh.

Many people also want to harvest the tasty sunflower seeds. To do this, allow the seeds to mature on the plant. Cover the flower heads when the petals wilt with a thin layer of horticultural fleece to stop birds stealing the seeds.

As the seeds develop, the flower head will droop and the seeds will swell. They are ready when the back of the flower head turns brown and the seeds darken. Cut the flower head off the plant and remove the seeds.
