Over recent years there has been a growing trend towards decorating our gardens for Christmas. A decade ago, it was just a few hardy souls here and there. But with the advent of inexpensive, reliable LED lighting, our gardens have been transformed into attractive, attention-grabbing winter wonderlands.

Now many tens of thousands of us are venturing outdoors to brighten our front gardens with lights, decorations and Christmas-themed accessories.

Some people ask for donations to charities, others are just happy to give joy to their streets and brighten up everyone’s lives over the cold winter period. But overall, they make a great contribution to brightening up communities… and anything that gets people outside and enjoying their gardens is a good thing in my book. With this in mind, Cultivation street – the national campaign for community and school gardening – launches a sister campaign, Illumination Street, to delight in garden decoration this Christmas.

People often think that the use of their garden ends when summer does, but this just isn’t true.

A treasured part of our UK heritage, hedgehogs have a lot to offer. What’s great about these caring creatures is that they work in harmony with the delicate balance in the garden.

They’re truly the gardener’s friend, eating a myriad of garden pests like slugs, snails and caterpillars that, if left to multiply, can wreak havoc to your garden plants.

Sadly, recent findings suggest that the number of hedgehogs in the UK has fallen by more than half since 2000. Although the decline has slowed in recent years, it’s believed it is due to urbanisation of gardens which reduces hedgerows and important habitats as well as insect prey.

Luckily, there’s a lot that gardeners can do to help convert their garden into a hedgehog-friendly one and here’s how:

Make your garden accessible. As you may have gathered from their rather telling name, hedges are the perfect haunt for hedgehogs. This is because it provides a cover, a habitat for insect prey and also allows them to hop from garden to garden.

If your garden has a fenced boundary, don’t fret, you can easily help hedgehogs out by adding a ‘highway’. This is a CD-sized cut out for them to use as a doorway. As hedgehogs have such poor eyesight and rely on their hearing, it stops them from getting muddled and wandering into the road.

Label their new entranceway with a proudly placed ‘hedgehog highway’ sign and you might find your neighbours join in the effort to make their garden into a hedgehog haven. The easiest way to keep hedgehogs happy is to provide them with a safe space. Nowadays you can easily build your own hedgehog house of an afternoon.

You can visit my website, daviddomoney.com, for instructive videos or blogs on how to do this but, essentially, the idea is to use an old wooden crate with a suitably sized entrance tunnel of 15cm wide and 11cm high, to ensure predators can’t get in.

Leaving areas of your garden to grow wild or building a log pile is also really effective for keeping your garden a safe space for these incredible creatures.

A single hedgehog can travel up to 2km in a night to find food, so why not open your very own hedgehog café—they’ll certainly put in the legwork to find it.

Most people don’t know that hedgehogs are actually lactose-intolerant, so although they’ll eat dairy products it causes them stomach discomfort and should be avoided. Chicken or turkey-based cat food is ideal, and you should buy the ones in jelly instead of gravy so that it’s not too salty and dehydrating.

Hedgehogs will feast and fatten themselves up before going into hibernation in November, so this is when they’re most on the search for food.

Make sure that the food supply is reaching them instead of the neighbourhood cat. Hedgehog feeding stations are sized specifically to let hedgehogs access the food source and they also keep the food covered and out of the rain—so everyone wins. Don’t forget, of course, to provide an ample water supply. Water sources can be hard found, especially in the winter, so I always put out a shallow water bowl that’s an inch or two deep and keep this topped up and refreshed daily.

At this time of year, it’s vital to keep checking for hedgehogs in piles of leaves or garden vegetation you intend to burn on the bonfire.

Avoid building your bonfire until the last possible moment and do a thorough check of it before lighting by lifting sections with a broom handle and listening for their snuffle sounds. When the time comes to light it up, light one side first to allow them to escape out the other side if they need to.

Take the time to safety-proof your garden: cover drains and holes and discard of any netting, twine, string or elastic which might ensnare and injure them.

With ponds, I place a plank of wood into the water and staple bamboo canes across it horizontally for the hedgehogs to grip onto when climbing out.

While spring is still far away, November is a great time of year to prepare asparagus for the following season. Firstly, cut back any dried fern stalks and remove any weeds lurking in the bed. Then add a rich manure or fertiliser with equal parts of lime, rock phosphate or bone meal. Finally, apply an organic mulch and on completion, your asparagus will be all ready for the coming spring.

It holds itself on with little suckers and climbs up a wall very quickly, so—beware, but if you have an unsightly garage or wall that you want to encourage to have foliage colour and serve as garden interest, you can’t go far wrong with this.

What a perfectly named tree.

Liquidambar styraciflua is a medium-sized tree that is noteworthy because of its autumn colour.

The leaves change colour at different levels, so on one tree you can have orange, red and gold—hence its name.

It’s ideal if you’ve got quite a sizeable space in the bottom of your garden and it will add a real amount of character and colour at this time of year.

Unquestionably, many different varieties of Japanese maple all give fantastic colour during October and November.

There are many varieties, the straight palmatum has the full five-lobed leaves but you can also get a ‘Dissectum’ variety which has leaves in a feathered form.

Some varieties are green during the spring/summer and then turn into autumn colour, but you can also buy some that are purple varieties to give warm shades later on in the year.

Otherwise known as the smoke tree, this is another really nice shrub.

It has oval foliage and is quite a sizable specimen, growing up to about 8ft tall and even bigger once it’s been well-established—so it’s a great filler.

It has these small floret flowers and buds which give the impression it’s smoking during the summer.

There are green-leaved and red-leaved versions which both tinge with fantastically coloured leaves in the autumn.

It’s not just about trees for foliage, crab apples are also perfect for colour.

These are great pollinators for your normal apple trees, but the fruits are really just for ornamental use.

There is a lovely one called Malus ‘John Downie’, which offers foliage in glistening gold and ruby red. Another variety called ‘Golden Hornet’ is pure golden in colour and there’s also a variety with cherry red apples called ‘Red Sentinel’.

These trees can offer sensational flowers in spring, lovely summer cover and fruits in the autumn too.

Also known as rowan or mountain ash, this small tree is another for fantastic colour—you get the autumn colour and the berries.

It’s not just all about the red berries, of course.

There’s one called ‘Joseph Rock’ which has lovely golden berries and Sorbus vilmorinii has almost mother of pearl colouring—it’s white but flushes of pink throughout.

In addition to that, there is a really nice shrub called cotoneaster.

There are many different varieties, you can get ground cover varieties and tree cotoneasters, but they all have bright berries with them. Some are red, some are amber. This particular variety is otherwise known as the herringbone plant, with branches that grow out in opposite directions like a fishtail.

These bear not only lovely foliage for structure, but masses of autumnal colour from the clusters of berries too. It’s perfect to put underneath a window, against the side of the wall, or as a small shrub in borders.

There are two types of outdoor azaleas, evergreens—which are small and green throughout the year in bright colours, and then the deciduous azaleas which lose their leaves during autumn.

When they lose them, they turn into brilliant bold colours; scarlet, burnt oranges and golds.

These grow slightly taller than their evergreen friends and give a huge amount of garden interest.

Grow your own pumpkins, it’s remarkably easy to do.

You can grow them from seed earlier on in the season or as young plantlets in spring. Some varieties, like ‘Atlantic Giant’, grow quite large and are edible too.

But you don’t just have to position these in a growing space, you can grow them between plants you already have or in raised beds to give flares of striking orange tones amongst your garden greenery.
