When the weather isn’t great, some of the best gardening projects can be done indoors. And growing plants on your fridge door is a great way to make the most of your space.

If you already have succulent plants in your garden, you can even make these using just cuttings. If not, you can buy small succulents at garden centres.

How to prepare the corks

For this, you will need wine corks. But they have to be real cork – plastic won’t work because it doesn’t hold moisture required by the succulent. Chop some in half to make smaller planters.

Use a drill or knife to make a hollow in the top of the wine cork. Just a couple of centimetres should be enough.

Attach a flat magnet to the back of the cork with some superglue. You can buy them from DIY or craft stores.

How to take cuttings

Take hold of a strong lower leaf on the succulent. Gently but firmly wiggle it until you feel it snap away from the stem. Make sure the leaf is intact – if you tear the leaf, it will not grow into a new plant.

Lay the cuttings out to air dry for a few days. This step is vital to make sure they don’t rot.

Then you’re ready to ‘replant’ the succulent. Lay them on top of some free-draining soil and leave in a brightly lit place. A windowsill with indirect sunlight is perfect.

Water the soil occasionally when it looks dry. After a couple of weeks you should see little leaves forming at the end of the cutting, and roots growing into the soil.

When the cutting is ready, the ‘mother’ leaf will start to wilt. You can detach it from the new plant or let it come away naturally. This usually takes at least two weeks.

How to make the fridge planters

Spoon a small amount of fine soil into the planters. It helps if this is a bit gritty – succulent plants hate waterlogged soil.

Then insert your succulent plant. Take care not to damage the roots.

Use a knitting needle or cocktail stick to gently pat some more soil around the roots. Water lightly with a dripper or a jug with a fine spout. You will need to moisten the cork like this every couple of weeks.

Attach the corks to the fridge and keep checking on your succulent garden as it grows.

Indoor plants are my favourite way to garden over winter. I love the dramatic red poinsettia and bright flowers of indoor cyclamen.

I also recommend trying Christmas azalea, Christmas cactus (Schlumberga) and orchids – either Phalaenopsis or cymbidium. They are much easier to grow than people think and all bring a touch of life and colour to your home.

One of the most common problems with Christmas plants like poinsettia is that they begin to wilt and die almost as soon as you get them home. They continue to decline no matter what you try. And you think you’re a plant killer.

But the truth is that the problems started before you got anywhere near it. Winter houseplants, especially poinsettia, are tender and die in cold weather. Icy draughts from open doorways in the shop can fatally damage plants before you buy them.

Make sure you buy good quality plants from a reputable supplier and check that they aren’t kept in cold conditions. You should also ask the shop to wrap them in paper or plastic bags to protect the foliage as you take the plant home. Even the journey from shop to car can harm a poinsettia!

Plants need stable conditions, so temperature fluctuations from central heating can stress them. Don’t put them above radiators or near fires, as this dries them out.

And keep them away from the porch and the front door – icy draughts from outside can damage the foliage. Any sheltered spot with bright light levels is ideal.

How to water houseplants

Overwatering is the single biggest killer of houseplants. We call it ‘killing by kindness’. You should only water plants when the surface of the compost appears dry.

I always recommend the standing water technique. Instead of pouring water onto the compost, stand the pots in a tray or sink in an inch of tepid water. Leave for five minutes, allow to drain and put the pots back. This lets roots take up only what they need without drenching the plant.

Or you can plunge the pots into a sinkful of tepid water and hold there until no more air bubbles appear. Then allow to drain as before.

If you have houseplants that like humid conditions, such as orchids, keep them in the bathroom. Or fill a saucer with pebbles and cover with water. Sit plants on the saucer, so they get the humidity without waterlogged roots.

You can also mist houseplants with spray water. It adds to the humidity and is welcomed by plants from tropical climates like orchids and poinsettia.

If you get out in the garden, remember to spruce up your containers too!

Paint wood and terracotta pots to give them a lift. Or wrap them in beads, tinsel or big bows for a glittering effect.

Prepare the pot

Just remember to check there are plenty of drainage holes. Waterlogged roots is the number one reason that container plants die in winter. Make extra holes if necessary, and fill the bottom with stones or broken pottery.

Add peat-free compost until the pot is about half full.

Pick the plants

I tend to choose one structural evergreen plant as a centrepiece for containers in winter. Try a dwarf conifer like Ellwood’s Gold or Picea albertiana ‘Conica’. They look like mini Christmas trees! You can even decorate them.

Then add some seasonal colour around the outside. Gaultheria, sometimes called pernettya, is a good choice for its rich red berries. For flowers, try cyclamen, winter heather or winter-flowering pansies.

You can also add trailing plants like ivy around the edges to make the container feel like it is overflowing.

Now water everything in. You may need to top up the soil a bit, but leave an inch between the soil surface and the container lip. This ensures that it doesn’t overflow every time you water it.
