What should I plant on top of my new stone walls?

I would like something evergreen to be planted. I always like the plant which sprawls over walls and has hundreds of little blue/purple flowers but have no idea what it is called. It flowers in spring and early summer, and grows best in poor, shallow soil.

There are loads of plants to fill that kind of space. Woody Mediterranean herbs are a good choice, like lavender and rosemary. Evergreens like ivy and creeping Jenny will trail down the wall too.

If the space is shallow, try alpine plants – they are naturally found in rocky spots and will grow well in poor or shallow soil. Sedum and saxifrage are always good choices. Look for carpeters too – they spread quickly and give good colour. [/fusion_text][fusion_text][fusion_dropcap]Q[/fusion_dropcap]I have an Acer in the garden that has been quite happy until the last 12-18 months. Do they need trimming or pruning? It seems to be sparse in places and spindly in others. It has not had a lot of leaves this year. Any advice would be great!

[/fusion_text][fusion_text][fusion_dropcap]A[/fusion_dropcap]Acers will respond very well to pruning. It is best to prune whilst the tree is dormant, so December to February would be an ideal time of year.

Make sure to prune back to a bud – this means cutting just above the bud. If you leave any excess wood above the bud, the dieback could become diseased.

Simply prune the acer tree to the shape that you want it to be. As always with pruning trees, take out any dead, damaged or diseased wood, and any branches that cross over or are growing in the wrong direction.

If you have a smaller Japanese acer, sometimes the branches can get congested towards the centre of the tree. If so, you may also want to open it up to allow light and air movement through the tree. It is currently about 12 – 15ft high which is a little large for a small garden, when is the best time to prune it and how severe dare I be?

[/fusion_text][fusion_text][fusion_dropcap]A[/fusion_dropcap]I love contorted hazel – I have one in my garden, but I’ll admit that I don’t prune it much! I like to leave it as wild as possible.

But you can prune it. Do it in early spring so you don’t chop off the catkins. It probably won’t take kindly to hard pruning, so aim to cut it back over a few seasons.

Prune out any dead, diseased or damaged branches. It’s better to remove them that to chop halfway along.

Prune out any congested branches or those that are growing the wrong way too.
