As Patron of the Hedgehog Preservation Society, I am keen to promote hedgehog awareness and looking after them is very close to my heart. But caring for our garden creatures is in our best interest too – they are great for the garden!

Certain types of wildlife in your garden, like hedgehogs, will eat all those pesky slugs and snails, while birds will eat crickets, grasshoppers and beetles.

The key to getting these visitors in, is to provide both shelter and food for them. Hedgehogs begin to emerge from hibernation as we head into March and, having lost their body weight over winter, they’ll be on the search for food.

But, they’re not the only critters that are in need of our help, even some insects help to control the pests – so why not create materials that will attract them?

Over recent years, there has been a decline in the amount of insects in the garden. Bugs like pollinators are less healthy and abundant than they have been in the past and if this continues, this will cause problems in the garden since plants rely on insects to reproduce. And other bugs like ladybirds and lacewings will eat those little aphid pests that damage our hard work outside.

Build a bug hotel

Building a bug hotel is easy, you don’t need to be a DIY expert to create something suitable. You can use plenty of materials you already have lying around in a shed or garage, and there’s no sort of finesse about making an insect hotel, so it’s totally fine to be messy!

You will need:
- A framework or container – old wooden pallets, garden pots, tins, or wooden boxes work great
- Assortment of fillings – twigs, wood chips, paper, leaves, cardboard and even bricks do the trick
Don’t worry if you don’t have all of the above, you can still improvise with whatever you can find!

Choose your framework first. This can be as simple as a used wine box or garden pot, but select your container size to fit in the space you have available.

Hanging habitats are great space savers if you want to opt to keep your floor space free and will also make sure to keep insects away from predators too.

Pick a spot which is sheltered and make sure that your habitat has the right entrance for the insect or mammal you are trying to attract. Insect homes can be situated almost anywhere and made up of materials you have to hand.

Try to have different layers of different things based on the list below. For example, the bottom layer could include damp wood, bark and moss while the top is drier and filled with straw.

Take a look at these materials and decide what you want to include:

Sticks/twigs:

Packing your insect hotel with sticks and twigs will attract ladybirds and lacewings.

Wood/bark:

Wood will entice bugs such as stag beetles, woodlice, spiders and centipedes.

Straw/hay:

Straw and hay attracts invertebrates such as ladybirds. They also like pine cones to lay their eggs in over winter.

Leaves:

Leaves will mimic a woodland floor so it attracts insects like butterflies, beetles and spiders.

Holes: General holes throughout the insect hotel will give solitary bees a place to shelter in. They like warmth so a sunny spot will give them what they need. Try placing bamboo, old canes, hollow plant stems in a plastic drainpipe or plastic pot placed between the pallets.

An alternative way of attracting insects is to create a log pile in your garden. It’s quite simple, you just stack lots of different sized logs on top of one another and then drive a stake into the ground either side to stop them rolling away. Carrots can be grown all year round and will give a good yield from a small area if you space them close together. Few vegetables can match its versatility in the kitchen. Plus, they’re a popular choice for the veg plot. Good varieties to grow are Jitka F1, Cascade F1 (Baby Chantenay) and Nantes 5.

Carrots are packed full of healthy vitamins and minerals, including beta-carotene, an antioxidant that produces Vitamin A and is linked to improved lung health, cognitive ability, and can help to reduce macular degeneration. So, carrots really are an amazing vegetable that give you a healthy boost!

They need deep, loose soil to grow long. So try short-rooted varieties if your ground is stony or heavy, or you want to grow them in containers.

Sow 1.5cm deep and 3 cm apart in rows 30cm apart.

Sow thinly to avoid having to thin out later (the aroma of the crushed foliage when thinning out can attract the dreaded carrot fly).

Seedling should begin to appear after 14-21 days.

If you do need to thin, do so once the seedlings start to appear to a distance of 5-8cm apart.

Destroy the thinnings by burning or burying them.

Keep weeds down in the early stages.

Once carrots are established, their leafy tops will block out sunlight to annual weeds.

They like the heat and will need little water.

However, if the foliage starts to wilt, water thoroughly every 10-14 days to keep the ground damp.

But beware overloading dry soil with too much water – it can cause the vegetables to split.

Carrots are generally ready to harvest 12-16 weeks after sowing.

Pull the roots while they are still young, as larger roots tend not to have as much flavour.

Pull up with your hands or use a fork if the soil is hard.

To store carrots, lift and remove surface dirt.

Cut the leaves to 1cm from the top and place in a box between layers of dry sand, so the carrots are not touching.

Radishes are one of the first vegetables that most gardeners try growing as kids. But they are rewarding for adults to grow too! Radishes are trouble-free and low-maintenance, and can be sown and harvested in the space of a month.

As well as being easy to grow, these plants are also an excellent source of vitamins, including Vitamin E, A, C, B6 and K, alongside other nutrients and minerals, like antioxidants, zinc, potassium. They are also provide a great source of fibre. Popular varieties include Globe Lucia F1, Cherry Belle and Long Nelson.

Also, they require a rich, light and well-drained soil with very low nitrogen levels. They are often used as a catch crop between slower germinating varieties like parsnips and onions. Sow every two weeks for a long supply to jazz up summer salads.

Seedlings should appear between 7-14 days after the sowing date.

You should not need to thin seedlings if they were sown according to instructions. If plants are overcrowded, thin to 2.5cm apart.

Never allow the plant to dry out while it’s growing or it may split. Water evenly, or heavily in dry weather.

These root vegetables may become dry and woody in July and August – if you want to grow radishes in high summer, look after them with lots of water.

Radish are ready to pick three to four weeks after sowing. Pull them as soon as they mature as they will become woody if left in the ground for too long.

Harvest the crop when the radish is the diameter of a 10p coin.
