September: Keep the summer feeling
Hi,
Just like that it seems that summer is almost over. With preparations for the kids go back to school, there are still a few days for them to get involved in some quick garden activities.
Although we officially enter autumn at the end of this month, there are plenty of ways to extend that summer feeling in your garden with these top ten plants for September. You can get plenty more seasonal gardening tips on my next Facebook Live show, supported by Hartman on Friday 16th September at 1pm.
This year marked the tenth year of Cultivation Street, and once again it was incredibly inspiring to see the achievements of school and community gardens up and down the country. Keep an eye out on the Cultivation Street website to find out the winners, and keep up with how you can get involved next year.
I’ve been really busy up in my grow-your-own area, with lots still to harvest. So, stay up to date with my Instagram and YouTube to see my progress and top tips to use in your own garden.
Happy gardening!
David
Gardening tip of the month
After a busy season for your lawn, prepare it for the cooler months so it’s in good nick for spring.
Start by weeding your lawn. Use a short handled hoe or knife so you can get as much of the root system out as possible to stop perennial weeds from spreading and growing back.
Use a spring-tined rake to collect all of the debris, dead grass, and moss which would stop moisture and fertiliser from getting to the grass if it was left in place.
Aerate the lawn by making holes with a garden fork. This allows more air and nutrients to get to the roots of the grass. It’ll also help the lawn through periods of drought or waterlogging.
