East-facing offices enjoy bright sunlight in the mornings, so it makes sense to find some houseplants that will thrive in this environment. Additionally, if you’re lucky enough to have an East-facing home office and benefit from that mood-boosting sunlight first thing in the morning, then you’re going to need some houseplants to really bring to room to life!
Nephrolepis exaltata (Sword Fern)
This variety of evergreen fern is a very popular houseplant. Likewise, their fronds add impact to dull spaces, which may well be needed in your home office space. Consequently, the soft edges of this houseplant will brighten up corners and harsh spaces, helping you to feel more relaxed in your space.
Moreover, ferns are often a great plant for creating a calming atmosphere. Their green hue calms and refreshes the viewer, and helps you to feel grounded and at one with nature.
- Does well in North-Facing, West-Facing and East-Facing aspects
- Evergreen
- Prefers partial shade
- Mist regularly if your home office isn’t already humid. Keep the soil moist with rainwater or distilled water
- Great at removing toxins from the air, and can help with headaches and respiratory problems
- Turn the plant around occasionally to help with even growth and light exposure
Dypsis lutescens (Areca Palm)
This bamboo palm supplies some height to your east-facing office if you have it available, but can also be grown much smaller if that works better for your home office. The areca palm’s name lutescens means ‘becoming yellow’. To summarise the reason for this, the stems that support the leaves are a more yellow colour than the green leaves.
Other names for this palm include ‘butterfly palm’, which refers to the shape of the leaves resembling butterfly wings. Furthermore, these lightweight leaves move easily in the wind, which also copies the fluttering movement that a butterfly produces.
- Prefers South-Facing or East-Facing aspects

- Prefers partial shade
- Allow the soil to dry well before watering again – the ‘trunk’ stores water efficiently
- Invites a tropical vibe into your home office
- Fertilise monthly to ensure your sago palm has adequate nutrients
Kalanchoe blossfeldiana (Flaming Katy)
Firstly, this plant is very appealing to the eye and difficult to kill, so it makes a wonderful gift for someone that you know has an east-facing home office space. Thought to symbolise wealth, there are few better plants to have nearby when working away in your office space at home.
This plant gets its name from its bright flowers, typically found in red though there are other equally bright varieties in orange, yellow, and pink.
- Thrives better in South-Facing, West-Facing or East-Facing aspects
- Evergreen
- Likes partial shade
- Because it is a succulent, it only requires infrequent watering and benefits from drying out between waterings
- A great plant for beginners, as this houseplant is low maintenance – wonderful for the busy home office worker
- Produces red flowers in spring – red is a great pop of colour for the home office for a slow day as it stimulates excitement
