Continue picking, processing, and storing. It’s easy to tell if the apple is ripe and ready to pick. Cup the apple in one hand and gently twist the stem. When ripe, the apple will come away in your hand. Don’t force it if it doesn’t, as that means it’s not quite ready to harvest yet.

Apples bruise easily, so place them carefully into your harvesting basket or box as stored damaged apples will spread disease to healthy ones around them. Store in a well ventilated, cool but slightly moist dark place like a garage or garden shed.

Storing in plastic bags will help preserve the moisture in very dry places. Check apples regularly and remove any immediately that show signs of bruising or going brown.

There’s nothing quite like the taste of forced rhubarb early in the year when fresh fruit is scarce. It’s much sweeter and usually ready to eat about 5 weeks earlier than rhubarb that’s left to develop naturally.

Autumn is a great time to mulch under fruit bushes and trees as this will help keep weeds down as well as retain moisture in the soil. Just ensure the soil is damp before adding the mulch layer. A garden compost mulch will help improve soil fertility and structure.

Wood chips can also be used, and these are a very effective weed suppressant.

Blackcurrants
- Again, cut stems of current year’s growth from healthy bushes. However, this time cut into shorter lengths, around 20-25cm cutting just below a bud.
- This time keep all the buds on the stem lengths and plant into a similar trench to red and white currants planting so that two buds are protruding above the soil surface. Also, space them 20cm apart. They will be ready to transplant to their permanent position by next autumn.

This is a good time of the year to plant out any pot grown fruit whilst the soil is still relatively warm.

If the weather is too wet or cold to go outside, snuggling up close to the fire with drink and a pile of fruit catalogues to choose and order new raspberry canes and bare-root fruit stock for planting out later in the winter.

If your soil is heavy clay, now is a great time of year to dig it over – just roughly, leaving large clods of earth exposed to the elements. The good news is you don’t need to do anything else. Winter frosts will break those clods of earth down into a fine tilth; one of nature’s miracles.

Another way to improve your soil is to sow what are known as ‘green manures’. These are crops which will grow and keep the soil covered over winter, stopping rain washing away that valuable nutrient rich top covering of soil.
