It is an effective way to clear a weed-infested area. This can be done by covering the ground and excluding light so weeds can’t grow. Start by cutting down any tall weeds to ground height.

Then cover the surface with sheets or cardboard which will decompose. Plastic and carpet aren’t recommended as they won’t degrade and chemicals from the carpets can make their way into the soil instead.

Over the cardboard layer, add a thick layer of organic matter such as homemade compost from your compost mile, well-rotted manure, leaf mulch, straw, or grass clippings. Firm it down and tread it in.

Then, with a bit of patience the soil will have become so rich that the weeds can be pulled out with ease. Bear in mind that this process can take 6-12 months, so have plenty of patience.

Basically, due to the soil not being disturbed, it doesn’t bring weed seeds to the surface to germinate.

On the other hand, for areas that are already cultivated, add a layer of organic mulch to the bed, without digging before or after. Firm the mulch in place, and simply plant or sow directly onto the surface.

When sowing seeds, using a rake will help to create a soft crumbly texture on the surface. But when planting, there will be less weeds to compete with and the soil will be a great texture as it’s not too compacted so there are air passages for roots and moisture to access easily.

Every year in autumn, add a layer of well-rotted organic matter when all of the crops have been harvested and cleared. Alternatively, do this in springtime when the beds have been cleared of winter crops.

There are many benefits to the no-dig method of gardening. Firstly the soil being left to its own devices means organisms can work and multiply, therefore helping our plants to grow their best.

The structure of the soil also means that you can walk on the beds without worrying about the soil sticking to your shoes. Therefore, you don’t need to use lots of space on pathways, which in turn means more space for growing – it’s a win-win!

You may not have heard of celeriac, and you’ll be forgiven for getting it mixed up with celery, which it has a similar flavour too. It’s a vegetable that isn’t often spoken about, but I think it should be. So, here’s how to grow your own celeriac at home.

Celery and celeriac may be from the same family and have similar tastes, but they are very different vegetables. You may see celeriac called celery root because it’s grown for its roots rather than the stem, like celery. Another difference is that celeriac can be left in the ground through winter and harvested when needed. Whereas celery is more perishable and is ideally eaten as soon as it’s ready.

This unusual veg is highly nutritious. It is a good source of vitamin K that helps with boosting the health of our bones, as well as being high in vitamin C which is necessary to reduce the risk of high blood pressure.

The edible part of the plant is the swollen stem, and it tastes like a mixture between celery, aniseed, and fennel.

Although celeriac has a similar flavour to celery, it is great when mashed or added to stews and soups. Peel the tough skin away and it can be boiled or roasted, and it can make a great alternative to potato chips. Or it can be grated raw over a salad.

In March, sow seeds in pots in a propagator or cold frame. When the seeds have germinated and become small seedlings, they can be potted up into individual pots. These can then be placed in a glasshouse, cold frame or on a bright windowsill.

Celeriac needs plenty of moisture to grow, as well as fertile soil and lots of sun. Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist.

Harden off the seedings by reducing the water and gradually expose them to outdoors in May. Then, in May to June, plant them out about 6-12 inches apart.

Mulching can help too because it will retain moisture whilst suppressing weeds at the same time.

When the plants mature, remove the outer leaves so that the crown is exposed and can develop. Remember to remove any side shoots if they grow.

‘Prinz’ is a variety that is slow to bolt and is disease resistant making it a perfect variety to start with.

From October to March, the celeriac will be ready to harvest.

Leave them in the ground until they are required, and in the meantime it’s ideal to cover the area with a thick later of straw over winter. Doing this will stop the ground from freezing and retain heat.

When you’re offered an allotment, you’ll need to sign a tenancy agreement. This agreement sets out your annual rent payment and lists what you can and can’t do on the plot. For example, keeping animals, planting trees and lighting bonfires.

If you’re lucky the previous occupant will have left you a weed free growing area. However, the reality may be the plot has become overgrown and will need serious cultivation before growing crops.

Although it sounds lovely to be allocated a full size plot, it is a large amount of land to look after. Therefore, you might be better taking a smaller size depending on how much time and help you have available to look after it.

Bear in mind that Allotment Societies have the power to take plots away from people who are not tending them.

Veg are divided into those different categories because each group has different growing requirements.

Legumes are peas and beans which produce nitrogen on their roots.

Brassicas are leafy crops like cabbage and broccoli. They need lots of nitrogen and so it makes sense to grow them after legume crops which have left nitrogen in the soil.

Roots like an open soil that isn’t too rich in nutrients and potatoes are grown on their own because harvesting them involves digging over large areas of the soil which would ruin any non-potato crops growing nearby.

It’s best not to grow the same crop in the same bed year after year as this may lead to a build-up of soil borne diseases. Instead, make a note of what you grow in each bed year by year so that you can keep track of and rotate the crops in the years following.
