With flurries of amber leaves dusting Britain’s streets and crisp golden sunshine greeting us each morning, it suddenly feels like autumn is in full effect.

Here I share with you my top ten plants to give spectacular Autumn colour.

Without a doubt, this plant screams out autumn with its bright scarlet leaves as it covers the front of many houses and cottages.

It holds itself on with little suckers and climbs up a wall very quickly, so—beware, but if you have an unsightly garage or wall that you want to encourage to have foliage colour and serve as garden interest, you can’t go far wrong with this.

It’s a fast climber, self-supported with lovely green leaves through spring and summer and affords spectacular gob-smacking autumnal colour.

What a perfectly named tree.

Liquidambar styraciflua is a medium-sized tree that is noteworthy because of its autumn colour.

The leaves change colour at different levels, so on one tree you can have orange, red and gold—hence its name.

It’s ideal if you’ve got quite a sizeable space in the bottom of your garden and it will add a real amount of character and colour at this time of year.

Unquestionably, many different varieties of Japanese maple all give fantastic colour during October and November.

There are many varieties, the straight palmatum has the full five-lobed leaves but you can also get a ‘Dissectum’ variety which has leaves in a feathered form.

Some varieties are green during the spring/summer and then turn into autumn colour, but you can also buy some that are purple varieties to give warm shades later on in the year.

Otherwise known as the smoke tree, this is another really nice shrub.

It has oval foliage and is quite a sizable specimen, growing up to about 8ft tall and even bigger once it’s been well-established—so it’s a great filler.

It has these small floret flowers and buds which give the impression it’s smoking during the summer.

There are green-leaved and red-leaved versions which both tinge with fantastically coloured leaves in the autumn.

It’s not just about trees for foliage, crab apples are also perfect for colour.

These are great pollinators for your normal apple trees, but the fruits are really just for ornamental use.

There is a lovely one called Malus ‘John Downie’, which offers foliage in glistening gold and ruby red. Another variety called ‘Golden Hornet’ is pure golden in colour and there’s also a variety with cherry red apples called ‘Red Sentinel’.

These trees can offer sensational flowers in spring, lovely summer cover and fruits in the autumn too.

Also known as rowan or mountain ash, this small tree is another for fantastic colour—you get the autumn colour and the berries.

It’s not just all about the red berries, of course.

There’s one called ‘Joseph Rock’ which has lovely golden berries and Sorbus vilmorinii has almost mother of pearl colouring—it’s white but flushes of pink throughout.

In addition to that, there is a really nice shrub called cotoneaster.

There are many different varieties, you can get ground cover varieties and tree cotoneasters, but they all have bright berries with them. Some are red, some are amber. This particular variety is otherwise known as the herringbone plant, with branches that grow out in opposite directions like a fishtail.

These bear not only lovely foliage for structure, but masses of autumnal colour from the clusters of berries too. It’s perfect to put underneath a window, against the side of the wall, or as a small shrub in borders.

There are two types of outdoor azaleas, evergreens—which are small and green throughout the year in bright colours, and then the deciduous azaleas which lose their leaves during autumn.

When they lose them, they turn into brilliant bold colours; scarlet, burnt oranges and golds.

Grow your own pumpkins, it’s remarkably easy to do.

You can grow them from seed earlier on in the season or as young plantlets in spring. Some varieties, like ‘Atlantic Giant’, grow quite large and are edible too.

A fun and family-friendly tradition is to make your own jack o’lantern. Pumpkins make fantastic decoration; with their vibrant warming tone, they’re truly distinctive.

You can get them from garden centres, local supermarkets and even farm shops and specialist growers these days—they’re everywhere.

If you want a classic football-sized pumpkin with a bright orange rind that’s easy to carve, you can’t go wrong with the aptly-named ‘Jack O’Lantern’ cultivar.

They’ll bring a spooky smile to your lips.

For larger, more impressive lanterns, the ‘Howden’ and ‘Harvest Jack’ varieties are perfect—they take a bit more emptying out because of their size but, if you have the patience, the pay off is literally huge.

Pop them in your front window and—as tradition has it—you’ll keep all the ghosts and ghouls at bay.

For more unusual varieties to carve, go for ‘Red Warty Thing,’ whose skin is covered in ghastly blood-red lumps, ‘Casper’ whose rind is a pale and frightful ghostly white or ‘Kakai’ which is classic Halloween orange streaked with slime green. A mixture of these perched on your front porch makes for a truly ghoulish display.

A top tip if you’re using a real candle in your lantern is to punch a hole in the lid. This allows free airflow and lets your candle burn bright. If you have young kids like me or you’re planning to leave your lantern nestled in straw, you might opt for a flickering LED candle instead. This gives off atmospheric light to rival the real deal without the fire risk.

Young children may not have the patience for carving large varieties of pumpkin but they can still join in the fun with miniature cultivars. My kids love the speckled orange ‘Hooligan’ and ribbed white ‘Baby Boo’ cultivars.

These can be hollowed out and carved or simply painted with spooky designs and displayed in windows to ward off evil spirits. My two, who are too young to be let loose with a knife, draw designs onto their pumpkins with a felt tip and I cut them out.

That way, they get to make their own lanterns safely.

The flesh and seeds of most pumpkins are extremely nutritious, containing a huge number of vitamins, minerals, healthy fats and antioxidants. So don’t just throw them away! Seeds can be roasted with garlic powder and salt for a mouth-watering savoury snack or stirred into molten salt caramel for a sticky toffee sweet.

If you mould this into globes and pop in wooden kebab sticks, you’ll have the perfect offering for neighbourhood trick-or-treaters too. The seeds of the ‘Kakai’ variety are particularly good for eating as they have no hard outer shell, unlike other varieties, so if you’re carving one of these, be sure not to miss out!

You can also use the flesh of the pumpkin to make tasty foods. Favourites in my household include warming pumpkin soup with crushed garlic, carrots and smoky bacon for seeing off the chill after an autumn walk and spiced pumpkin loaf with fragrant cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger as an accompaniment to an afternoon cuppa by the fire.

You can also make gingerbread and pumpkin biscuits iced with ghoulish designs or try the American classic of pumpkin pie served with vanilla bean ice-cream for a tasty after dinner treat.

Either buy a pumpkin specifically for cooking or make use of the flesh of your jack o’lantern in a few days’ time—the stringy innards aren’t enough on their own to give your home cooking that distinctive pumpkin punch.

Some pumpkins are better for eating than others, so bear this in mind. Larger pumpkins tend to have less flavour than smaller ones and those with stringy flesh are less pleasant to eat. The ‘Sweet Sugar Pie’ and ‘Red Warty Thing’ varieties have fine-textured sweet flesh that is ideal for baking into pies and biscuits.

‘Cinderella’ and ‘Fairytale’ pumpkins are the shape of Cinderella’s carriage and have thick, ribbed rinds. This makes them hard to turn into jack o’lanterns but fantastic in soups and breads.

If you don’t fancy carving your own lantern, you could always decorate with interesting-looking whole pumpkins over Halloween and eat your decorations later. For ornamental pumpkins that make for incredible home cooking, choose the dead man’s blue of the ‘Blue Prince’ cultivar or the other-worldly fruit of the ‘Turk’s Turban’ variety. If kept at a cool room temperature, pumpkins will keep for months.

You can actually buy some lawn feeds combined with weed killer, so you can boost the lawn whilst dealing with the most persistent weeds, like dandelions. With these, because they’ve got tap roots, you really need to get out as much root as possible or they’ll just regrow.

After a year or fun, you may have to repair the lawn of damaged spots; where the cricket stumps were, children’s slides were sat, or where paddling pools have been left out—autumn is the best time for this. I just cut out a square where the damaged grass is and then take away some of the old turf, put in some fresh compost and mix in grass seed to water well in.

Make sure you remove any piles of leaf deposits, where there are wind traps in the garden, as it doesn’t do any good for the lawn at all. The odd leaf here and there will be pulled down by the worms, but larger piles need to be removed as it stops the lawn getting any light. This means the grass yellows and eventually dies, so make sure you collect them up.

Then the best thing to do is to add them into the compost or you can purchase a hessian leaf sack to store them over winter. Pop the leaves inside and leave the full sack around the back of the garden shed or garage for a year—it will make brilliant leaf mulch to dig into borders for next season.

You can give lawn treatments the best chance at being effective by getting your lawn ready to receive them.

Use a scarifying rake to pull out excess thatch from the turf. If left to grow densely, the soil finds it hard to keep up with the demand—this way you only leave strong growth in place.

So, if it looks as if you’re removing a lot of grass, this is actually dead or damaged and will only hinder water and fertiliser absorption. A good bit of kit is a spring tine or leaf rake, which won’t damage the lawn but removes anything that doesn’t need to be there.

Another way to prep lawns ready to receive resources is to aerate. You can do this with a garden fork or buy a specialist aerating tool, but essentially you want to take out cores of soil along the entire lawn to allow the roots better airflow and access to water—it can also prevent waterlogging.

Where grass has grown into pathways or borders, you can take a turfing knife or edging shears and cut away the turf to re-establish the borders.
