Peonies

Peonies, or paeonia, are a classic British garden plant, famous for their bold foliage and big, showy flowers. They look divine planted in borders, giving the garden a punch of colour and fragrance from mid-spring to mid-summer. They can also be used as a low hedge, or mixed with roses, irises and columbines for a full flower bed.

Division

Peonies can be divided into two groups: herbaceous perennials with soft growth that dies back over winter, and tree peonies with woody stems that do not.

The plants have large, alternate leaves that are often tinged with bronze when young and rich red in autumn. But the real showstoppers are the flowers. They can be single, double or anemone-form and have lightly ruffled edges. The outer petals are broad and striking, and the centre is filled with strong stamens. They also make fantastic cut flowers.

Brilliant white

P. lactiflora ‘Duchesse de Nemours’ is an old peony with white ruffled petals that deepen to yellow at the centre. It’s tall and has a strong, sweet fragrance. It’s also floriferous, meaning it grows multiple blooms on each stem that make excellent cut flowers.

Another good variety is P. lactiflora ‘Do Tell’, which has open, anemone-form petals and striking pink and white stamen. It won the American Peony Society Gold Medal in 2004, and grows prolifically in Britain. It has dark green foliage and strong red stems that won’t need staking.

Soft yellow

P. ‘Bartzella’ is an intersectional hybrid made from a cross between a white herbaceous peony and a yellow tree peony. It’s one of the most popular hybrids around, and won the American Peony Society Gold Medal in 2006. The huge blooms can be 25cm in diameter and have lemon yellow petals with red bases. It flowers prolifically without the need for staking, and has a lovely lemon fragrance.

How to grow peonies

Peonies are great for beginner or lazy gardeners, because they’re hardy and low-maintenance. They prefer full sun but tolerate light shade and thrive in most soil types.

Plant them in the autumn and once established they will look after themselves. They usually reach 60-90cm tall, but some varieties will get up to 150cm high.

The flower heads may need staking when in full bloom to stop the stems snapping. Cut the foliage as it dies back in autumn to avoid peony wilt – a grey mould.

Peonies are long-lived plants but they don’t like being transplanted, so leave them where they are. If you absolutely have to, move it in the autumn and try to create as little root disturbance as possible.

Did you know? Ants love peonies and can often be seen crawling over the buds and flowers. But don’t worry – they are there for the sweet nectar the flowers produce and don’t harm the plant!

Blushing pink

P. lactiflora Sarah Bernhardt is a long-time classic peony. It’s a floriferous variety named after the famous Victorian actress. The huge blooms have crinkled pink petals and a light fragrance. It’s a tall bush with rich green foliage that will need staking.

For something a bit more modern, try P. Coral Charm, a hybrid peony with salmon-coloured petals and a bright yellow centre. The blooms are in an antique rose form, and they fade from coral to a peach shade as the flower opens. The foliage stays green all year round, and it grows to 120cm tall.

Rich reds

P. lactiflora ‘Felix Crousse’ is an old, floriferous peony with a faint fragrance. It has rich raspberry-red flowers with a wide collar and a tightly packed centre. It’s a dependable variety with good drought resistance but may need staking.

Another good variety is P. suffruticosa ‘Rimpo’, a tree peony. It can grow up to 150cm tall, and has lovely deciduous foliage. It hails from Japan and has large blooms in a deep red shade with bright yellow stamen.

Now let’s look at fencing!

Fencing

Think of your fence like garden wallpaper – make it stylish enough and it can carry a room.

Now have a look at your current garden fencing. Does it do anything for you? The good news is that it’s easy to change. You can get a new fence, or simply give yours a new look.

Replace it

If your fence is damaged or rotten, or you just really hate it, rip it out and start again. This will cost you, so do your research first. Find out what type of wood and finish you want, and take the height into account.

Go for something high with extra trellis panels on top if you want more privacy, or try something lower and lighter if you don’t want to plunge your garden into shade.

Cover it

This is cheaper than replacing the fence, and looks fantastic. You can buy natural screen covering on a roll, and attach it to the surface of your fence to give your garden a facelift. There are plenty of options to choose from: natural willow, heather, bamboo and many more.

Simply attach it to the fence with a nail gun, or use a hammer and ‘U’ clips. You can cover up your existing fence in an afternoon, and it gives a stunning finish.

Stain it

The easiest way to change the appearance of your fence is with a tub of stain. The best colours are natural – I had a vivid metallic purple one at a Chelsea Flower Show garden once, but we had five days of problems matching the plants to it!

In my own garden the fences have a wood-coloured stain. It works with all plants and gives the garden a natural, earthy feel. Green, so keep it simple by keeping it natural.

Fence treatments

Treating your fence every few years will protect the timber from being damaged by water and frost. If you don’t want to change its colour, choose a clear wood preservative instead.

Step 1 – choose your treatment

Most modern fence treatments contain water-repellent waxes and resins to protect the timber from the British weather, but you can use a special wood preserver as an undercoat for added protection.

Step 2 – choose the day

Pick a calm, dry day with plenty of cloud. Hot sunshine will dry the treatment too quickly, and windy weather will blow leaves and debris onto your wet fence!

Step 3 – prepare the fence

Clean away any dirt, cobwebs and bird mess with a stiff brush and some warm water. Sand any areas with splinters and refasten any loose boards. Give it a final wipe down with a damp cloth.

Step 4 – apply the treatment

You can use a brush or a spray system. It’s worth splashing out on a sprayer if you have a lot of fence panels. If you’re using a brush, save time (and elbow grease) by using a small roller to cover the face of the panels.

Stain one fence panel at a time, working from top to bottom. Make sure you cover the top end of the panel and the posts, which is where rainwater sits.

Apply the treatment following the grain of the wood, remembering to brush back to ensure an even application. Leave to try as per the pack instructions.

Shady areas of the garden can seem unwelcoming to plants, but there is a huge range that will thrive there and brighten up any dark corners of your garden.

A lot of shade-loving plants have fewer flowers with less colour, but they make up for this with interesting and attractive foliage. Using a range of different plants in your bed will create a striking display.

Shaded areas beneath large trees may have poor soil and lack moisture, so it’s important to add good compost and mulch for plants to grow.

If you wish to plant spring bulbs, get them in the ground in autumn to give them time to establish over winter. Snowdrops, bluebells, lily of the valley and hardy cyclamen are good choices.

Some open shady areas can be prone to water retention, so choose moisture-loving plants that will thrive in this environment. Astilbe, sedge, hostas, lady fern, ligularia and polygonatum will happily grow in damp soil.
