If an expanse of bare wall is sucking the life out of your garden, colourful climbers are a godsend – and easier to train than a slug on a see-saw

Bare, boring walls, or a solitary brown shed, can bring your whole garden down – so why not transform them? Climbing plants can turn that unused corner into a breathtaking feature. Nothing says English cottage garden like a beautiful wisteria or climbing rose, framing windows and doorways and adding barrels of colour and character to your home.

And there are plenty of other great climbers to choose from that will match any taste and available space. You don’t need to limit your canvas either – climbers can lend a lift to a fence, pergola or archway too.

They won’t give instant cover – most take several years to become really established, though some types of ivy can be faster. So a climber won’t help if you need instant impact. You’ll also need to give some thought to which climber suits your spot. Some plants are vigorous and more suited to a large and open wall.

Being against a wall means they will get a very specific amount of light, so sun-loving and more tender plants will want a south or west-facing wall to absorb the sun’s heat in the day.

Those walls also work well forwinter-flowering climbers to give them the most of the sun. For your chillier north and eastfacing aspects you’ll have to go for hardier, shade-tolerant plants. Remember rainfall can be limited by walls and eaves, so work out how much watering they may need.

Soil or pots under the eaves will be more prone to drying out – mulching with organic matter or topping with pebbles can help conserve moisture during the summer growing season. Finally, think about how much training and pruning the plant needs, and whether that matches the time and energy you have to offer it.

Climbers work in different ways. Some plants, such as ivys, will cling to surfaces naturally via aerial roots. For others, such as honeysuckle or clematis, you’ll need to provide a framework like a trellis.

Wall shrubs like the pyracantha don’t climb naturally, and must be trained, but will just lean against the wall once established. Planting in the soil is always better if you can. If it’s over a patio, remove a slab if you can and plant there.

Just be sure the soil next to the house isn’t full of builder’s rubble and dig in plenty of fresh compost. Many climbers are okay in a container, but don’t do well over long periods. They out-grow them and become difficult to water effectively. If this happens, the only option may be to break through or cut off the bottom of the pot and remove a paving slab underneath so the plants roots can grow down into the soil.

You want to plant 30-45cm away from the wall – this will help catch the rain, which can be blocked by the eaves of the house from reaching the roots, or by the plant’s own foliage

It also means the roots have a little more space to grow if they’re going in the ground. Before you start planting, remember to do any work needed on the wall or fence first. All climbers need at least a little initial training. Using crossed wires or a trellis, tie on the new shoots with soft garden twine.

If you’re planting a climber that will need a framework, be sure it is securely attached as the plant will become incredibly heavy as it grows.

Bear in mind that perennial climbing plants can get fairly large as they mature – often reaching up to two storeys in a decade – so are far better in the ground where possible. If you have a sunny wall to plant against, try Jasminum officinale, campsis, rose or wisteria. Jasmine and rose can be great for fragrance, while the campsis is easy because it requires no support – and the wisteria is just a British classic.

For spots that don’t get much sun, you could go with clematis, honeysuckle, ivy, hydrangea petiolaris, or pyracantha – also known as firethorn.

Tip

Wisteria can flower beyond spring into summer if they are on a south or south-west facing wall. They love to be in full sun.

Be aware, self-climbing plants like ivy and Virginia creeper will leave marks on the wall if you want to remove them.

Clematis requires very little pruning, the hydrangea and ivy need no support, honeysuckle is beautifully fragrant, and pyracantha is bold but stays small and manageable. Its spiky branches are also great to deter burglars when planted underneath windows or along streetfacing fences.

As ever, talk to staff at your local garden centre about what would suit your circumstances. You could even take a photo of the spot you want to cover – or a soil sample – to get it exactly right. Climbers take a little work to get established, but they give your garden another dimension and pay back dividends in style and character.

Options

Leylandii is increasingly popular hedge – and is evergreen for year-round protection. But they will shoot up unless you keep a tight rein on them. They are smashing if you need instant cover but not ideal for close neighbours because of their tendency to block out the light.

My choice

My favourite conifer is the lovely Thuja plicata ‘Atrovirens’ – an elegant, emerald green, glossy-leafed hedge. If you crush its leaves, your fingers will smell of pineapple. Also known as western red cedar, it is fast-growing – it will shoot up three feet a year in the right conditions.

On the beech

Classic beech makes for a beautifully shaped hedge, with leaves that turn a stunning coppery gold in autumn. And although deciduous, beeches will hold on to their dried leaves well into winter.

You should place the shrubs around a foot-and-a-half apart. They will thicken much faster if they are close together but you will need to plant more of them.

Easy

Laurel is a low-maintenance hedge shrub that is perfect if you’re looking for a mid-height barrier. It is relatively fast-growing but only needs clipping a couple of times a year. Hornbeam looks very similar to beech but is denser.

Privet is a British classic, with its small, dark green leaves, though perhaps a shade less popular than it once was. It has evergreen leaves and, although it may lose some foliage in cold winters, they soon reappear in spring. It produces little white flowers in summer and can be pruned to keep the growth dense.

Bamboo

For something that little bit different, try bamboo. It is versatile and incredibly fast-growing. It is fairly low-maintenance too, and creates height, shade and privacy with a dramatic backdrop. Plus it can provide a windbreak or a sound barrier to a noisy road or neighbours. Bamboo thrives in moderate soils – as long as they are not water-logged or arid.

Two kinds

There are two kinds: running or clump-forming. The former are known as invasive bamboos, producing long underground stems. So be careful as they can spread like wildfire. To avoid that happening, plant in a trench 60 to 120cm deep with sides lined with root barrier fabric or solid material such as paving slabs or corrugated iron. That should stop shoots spreading. It should protrude above soil level to stop stems arching over the top.

Clump

Clump-forming bamboos are more garden-friendly, forming tight clumps with little danger of spreading. Chimonobambusa bamboo likes a shady place, while phyllostachys suits direct sun. Pseudosasa, sasaella or bashania are fine for an exposed spot, though you may need a temporary windbreak while they are establishing themselves.

If you’re thinking of putting in a new hedge, autumn is a great time to get shrubs, trees and hedging into the garden. They are naturally dormant then and the ground is also still soft and workable.

Bare-root

Bare-root plants establish themselves quickly. They have been grown in the ground at nurseries, rather than in pots. You buy them and they are dug up, their roots are wrapped and they are delivered to you ready to go straight in the ground.

Price

They are the perfect choice if you’re putting up a new hedge because they are cheaper than containerised shrubs. But they should not be left out of the ground for long. Try to plant them as soon as you get them. But not if the ground is frozen or waterlogged. If you have to wait a few days, put the rootballs in trays or pots and cover with compost. Keep in a frost-free place like the shed until it is warmer.

Look

They will look like a bundle of twigs with roots but don’t worry. After a couple of months, you’ll soon see the beginnings of your hedge.

While the roots are bare, be sure to keep them covered with damp rags or hessian. Just before you begin planting, soak the roots in a bucket of water for 20 minutes.

Dig individual holes or a trench for planting – remember to leave space on either side for growth. Square holes encourage roots to extend outwards rather than run round in a circle.

In dry soil, fill the hole with water and let it drain away so the earth is moist for roots. You’ll see a soil mark on the stem of your young shrub – do not plant deeper or you may damage it.

Mix

Create a soil mixture to refill the hole with nutrient-rich material. Use half garden soil and half general-purpose compost. You can also add fertiliser – but make sure it is well mixed in. It can damage the roots if it comes into direct contact with them.

Add some of this mix to the base of the hole to provide a cushion. Water well while it gets established and hold off pruning it for a year.

Ever felt your garden was a bit samey? If so, why not add a new bed or border? Or transform a lawn or unused veg patch into an ornamental growing space?

Creating a new bed is a weekend project. A great tip is to use a hosepipe to mark out the bed’s shape. Then you can view it from an upstairs window and adjust it to get it right. Remember you will need to be able to access the centre of the bed for weeding, watering and planting.

Once you are happy with the site and shape, peg out string to mark the edges and, using a nice sharp spade, remove the existing topsoil and turf to a depth of about three inches. If you are converting lawn, I don’t advise turning the turf over and digging it back in. You will be digging out grass for years to come.

Instead, recycle your turf in your compost heap.

Now for the hardest part. Use a garden fork and turn the soil over, breaking up larger lumps and adding in well-rotted organic material and new soil or compost. For bigger patches use a rotavator. You can hire them by the day and they will save you some of the most backbreaking work you will ever do.

Look out for pebbles, roots and other debris and get rid of it all. Hire a skip if there is lots of it. While you are adding in new soil, chuck in dry fertiliser such as MiracleGro® slow-release or chicken manure pellets to add nutrients.

Once you have got a soft, fertile soil bed, it is time to think about planting. A couple of perennial shrubs – conifers are ideal – will make a good centrepiece and add structure.
