It’s a beautiful celebration of the UK’s cut flower industry, and it promotes British flowers and their growers, plus showcases the work of independent florists.

Just like with food, discerning people want to know provenance, so ‘grown in the UK’ labels have become a big hit with shoppers. The current trend is for seasonal, vintage blooms and greenery that have that ‘just-picked’ look. So if you have a garden, why not cut the miles down even further and plunder your own borders?

Cottage garden favourites like lupins, alliums, delphiniums, snapdragons, cornflowers, stocks and sunflowers are perfect for cutting and arranging. The best time to pick flowers is last thing at night or first thing in the morning. Cut and plunge straight into water and not in a trendy flower trug, as this makes all the difference to the flowers’ vase life. When you pick annuals and biennials, don’t cut them to the ground but leave two or three leaves for the plant to recover.

If you want to keep a cut-and-come-again display, it’s important to pick flowers every two weeks otherwise the plants will run out of steam. It’s a good idea therefore, to encourage friends to help themselves too, so that when you go on holiday the flowerbed remains productive.

To give your arrangements a professional finish, always make foliage the backbone of your displays. You can use shrubby trimmings such as branches of beech, willow, eucalyptus and euonymus, or the foliage of herbs like lavender, sage and rosemary. You could also scour the country lanes for stems of hedgerow favourites like cow parsley.

Throughout British Flower Week you’ll find that many of the country’s Flower Festivals and gardens, which usually open their gates to visitors at this time of year, will be holding special events.

So if you want to learn more about flower arranging, look out for those that have workshops with experts on hand; they can guide you through the basics and you can practice making your own hand-tied posies and arrangements.

Participating florists will also be showcasing their work, not only in their own shops but hotels and restaurants too, so have your camera handy! Five of Britain’s best and most creative florists have also been commissioned to produce designs that promote London’s New Covent Garden Flower Market and these will be revealed on www.britishflowersweek.com and social media over the course of the week.

Thank you to everyone who took part in Yakult’s Every Day Inspiration Challenge! I loved seeing and judging your entries, and I was bowled over by your clever and imaginative ideas.

Yakults Every Day Inspiration Challenge asked people to find inventive ways to reuse their iconic yoghurt drink bottles.

You spent four weeks crafting, painting and creating masterpieces. And we had a hard time judging them all!

    Meet our winner

Colette Mellor created a charming mobile with Yakult bottles transformed into insects and spiders. She also added small bells inside the bottles, so it doubled up as a wind chime.

Colette has won the top prize of £500 of Hobbycraft vouchers.

    Two runners-up

We also awarded two runners-up prizes of £250 of Hobbycraft vouchers each.

Lee Biddle created this beautiful Easter wreath with his daughter, using Yakult bottles to make rabbits.

Jemma Webster worked with her little boy on a raft of projects, including vases and fairy light holders.

    Congratulations to our winners!

And thank you to everyone who sent in their ideas.

Here are some more inspiring creations!

Emma Hedges created this Oscars scene complete with a theatre.

Jamie Edwards made a chess board set with Yakult bottles.

Richard Beesley made a space scene.

Rebecca Jenner created luminous ‘festival lights’.

And finally Jean Robinson made cut farm animals with button noses!

    Well done everyone.

Cultivation Street 2015: Regional front garden winners

Judging the Cultivation Street entries this year was so hard! All our shortlisted entries had fantastic gardens and we were hard pushed to pick the winners.

Congratulations to all on this list – you have won £500 of National Gardening Gift Vouchers.

    Bedford Road, St. Albans

Residents of Bedford Road endured months of roadworks that turned their street into a building site. Once the workmen left, a few neighbours began planting up window boxes and hanging baskets to spruce up the street.

They don’t have front gardens but have used containers and a little bit of creativity to green up the concrete.

Eventually, the movement spread and residents across four streets got involved. They now have a thriving community group with drinks and ‘meet the neighbours’ events.

Judges were impressed by their enthusiasm and creativity. They are growing stunning front gardens without having any soil!

Bedford Road residents were also crowned the overall Cultivation Street winners! Read more here.

    Wildflower Alley, Belfast

Inspiring neighbours in Belfast have taken over the alleyway that leads to their streets and turned it into a wildflower haven.

It’s the first community-led regeneration project in the area. They used only recycled materials and sourced donations of planters, compost and plants from the council and community gardens.

The alley now has flowers, wall murals, brightly painted gates and fences, relaxed seating, bird feeders and hopscotch.

Judges were impressed by their work on sustainability and the scale of the transformation.

    Malt Mill Lane, Alcester

A group of green-fingered neighbours have come together to create a garden walk through their street. The buildings in this historical area were renovated some years ago.

Some residents began growing plants outside the properties to make the area look nicer. This quickly turned into a community project involving the whole street.

The town receives a lot of tourists and they love to walk down the street and chat to the residents who are tending to the plants.

The judges loved the look of the street and commended the planting, even when residents didn’t really have front gardens.

    Kensington Street, Blackburn

Residents on Kensingston Street have adopted derelict land to create front gardens and community green spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Their properties didn’t come with front gardens, but they have taken over unused land to the front of their houses. Over the years, they have fenced off the area and some have even claimed possession through the land registry.

They help each other with the gardens and have now cleared another derelict area to create a community space. Everyone bought and donated plants and made a central feature from recycled pallets.

Judges loved their determination to make front gardens and were bowled over by what a difference it made to the community.

    Scotland

    scotland-cultivation-street-regional-award-campaign-winners

    St Michael’s Drive, Cupar

Neighbours on this quiet street have large front gardens that felt overwhelming. But one resident began to create an intricate topiary garden which was being admired by passers-by.

His neighbours were inspired to tackle their own front gardens and they started chatting over the hedges and walls. It created a new sense of pride in how their street looks.

They all featured lawns and evergreens to have year-round structure and fill the space.

Judges liked their creativity and the effort they had put in to making stunning front gardens.
