Roses are a fantastic plant to have in the garden for a multitude of reasons. Not only do they have fantastic flowers with classic aromas, but the petals and rosehips are edible.

Roses bought in containers can be planted all year round. Their preferred spot and conditions will depend on the type, so check the label for the best spot.

Dig a hole roughly twice as wide as the rootball to a spade’s depth. Mix in a spadeful of organic matter like compost, and fork in a general fertiliser.

Tease out some of the roots to help them establish and plant the rose to the same depth as it was in the container. Top up with soil, then firm down and water well. For the first couple of years, water well in dry spells to keep the compost moist and help the plant establish.

Feeding with a special rose fertiliser every spring will help to deliver impressive flower displays. If you think growth has slowed in mid-summer, apply again.

Raspberries prefer a moisture-retentive, fertile soil that’s slightly on the acidic side. Preferring a sunny spot, they’ll also tolerate partial shade. Due to the dormant period in the chillier months, bare-root plants can be planted between October and April.

When planting, it’s ideal to plant them in rows that run from North to South so that they don’t shade each other, because they grow tall. Their tall growth means you should have support in place.

To plant, add well-rotted manure and general fertiliser or fish blood and bone to the site. Then, plant with 45-60cm apart, adding a thick mulch of organic matter.

Once planted, prune the canes to within 25cm of the ground. Also, keep the compost moist and during growing season feed with a liquid general-purpose fertiliser monthly.

You can pick them and eat them fresh from your garden. What’s more, they will provide your body with nutrients such as vitamin C and manganese, as well as vitamin K, which supports strong bones.

Strawberries are very easy to grow, and can be grown almost anywhere, whether you have a balcony with a window box or hanging basket, patio garden or a large growing space. Plants can be bought as potted plants or as bare-root runners.

In March to April, plant the strawberry plants and water them frequently to help them settle into their new space. When watering, water the soil directly rather than the crowns and fruit because this can lead to diseases.

Position them in a place with fertile, well-drained soil, sun, and shelter.

Then, to encourage growth and fruiting, it’s important to feed with the right feed at the right time. In early spring, feed with a general fertiliser. During growing season, apply a liquid potash feed such as tomato feed every week or two.

You can grow rhubarb from seed, but it’s much easier to plant a dormant crown. These are taken from strong plants and will establish faster. Alternatively, you can buy pot-grown rhubarb.

Rhubarb will grow happily in a container, but it has a large root system and will need a deep pot.

Plant in a sunny spot with moist but well-drained soil, that has been prepared with plenty of organic matter.
