Clematis are wonderful plants to have in the garden. They provide colour and can be cultivated into some great shapes… like a wigwam!

A social climber

But first the basics about this climbing perennial. Clematis are incredibly adaptable and will grow up walls, fences, pergolas and from containers or moist but well-drained soil. If you have an unsightly shed or garage wall you can soon cover it with masses of bright flowers. They can even be left to scramble through shrubs and trees to lend some amazing colour. But the plant will also thrive in containers, pots or planters on a patio or balcony – adding height, foliage and flowers.

Potting the wigwam

If using a container, choose one that’s at least 50cm deep with holes for drainage. The larger the better as it will contain more soil space for roots and moisture. As ever, fill after you’ve sited it or it’ll be too heavy to lift. Most clematis varieties prefer full sun but they will be fine in partial shade.

Toil with the soil

Use good quality compost. If you are going to struggle to water regularly, add a handful of moisture-retaining crystals to stop it drying out. For a patio or balcony you will want a plant that doesn’t grow too tall. Luckily, there are clematis varieties that stay under 6ft – including Cartmanii Joe, Haku Ookan and Marmori. Now get the clematis into the container and firm in the compost around it. Don’t plant any deeper than it was in the pot it came in.

Give it some stick

Place four 6ft canes around the outside of the pot slanting inward so they meet at the top – using some string or raffia fronds to tie them together. You’ll be astonished at how fast your clematis will grow up the poles. But a general liquid feed will help boost foliage and flowers. As it grows, the branches should be intertwined through the wigwam. Use twist ties to help shape the display and in no time you’ll have an amazing wigwam of clematis.

One of the greatest things I ever put in my garden was a greenhouse.

It effectively became another room to my home. I’m in there all the time. A greenhouse should be equipped with everything you need, and not only for the garden. You also need a radio and, if you have electricity, even a kettle.

Great escape aside, the greenhouse is there to help your plants grow – not just the exotics, but also for getting things like vegetables, fruits and bedding plants off to a good start. By growing from seed you can save money and enjoy the process of gardening from the very start to planting out. And it extends your gardening the whole year round – giving you a sanctuary to over-winter sensitive plants, such as geraniums or fuchsias, for the next year.

So where do you put a greenhouse and what type should you choose? Make sure it’s not under any trees for starters. You don’t want branches crashing through the roof during gales, nor leaves and bird droppings covering it. You do want as much light as possible. Try to keep it out of the most exposed part of your garden to protect it from high winds.

If you have a clear outside wall you can get a lean-to against your house or garage – it saves money and space. They’re supplied with toughened glass these days. A basic 6ft x 6ft model will cost from £300. Many of them are self-assembly, with detailed instructions and they all have a long guarantee covering workmanship and materials.

Coldframe

If you don’t have a big budget, you could try a cold frame instead. These stand at thigh height with brick or wooden sides and a slanted glass roof. It won’t be quite the Full Monty, but it gives you extra options in the garden

Placement

I’d suggest putting a path down the centre of the greenhouse – flagstone or concrete slabs are fine. Some gardeners like to have a soil bed on either side for growing too. Inside I put workbenches to the left and right. Underneath them I have flint gravel to soak up moisture. At the far end is my potting table. It always has bags of soil and pots at the ready and pots at the ready.

Above the benches I have a thin strip of shelving for seed packets, labels and the like. It is also well worth investing in an automatic window vent so you don’t have to fret about running backwards and forwards as the weather changes.

Having a greenhouse is an investment but it will repay you a thousandfold over a lifetime.

There is no substitute for gazing at masses of beautiful flowers in July and choosing the right plants to fill bare corners is really easy to do. All being well, your garden should be absolutely bursting with seasonal colour in July.

On the top of the list is a plant to add purple majesty to your plot and larkspur is just the ticket. Inviting in a plethora of productive pollinators, this plant will not only put on a performance of its own but encourages insects to the benefit of your other plants.

This erect perennial has a lot to offer to informal and cottage beds and borders and is truly striking to look at too, with tapering spikes featuring deep purple double flowers – what more could you want.

Just make sure to position it in full sun within a sheltered plot away from strong winds and staking will help to keep the heavy-ended stems looking perky.

Nigella, also known as love-in-a-mist, are beautiful bushy annuals with light blue and white flowers in July; adding enchanting colour to any summer garden.

Love-in-a-mist will thrive in full sun, in a well-drained soil and need little maintenance, as they are generally pest and disease free. The ‘Miss Jekyll’ variety of Nigella has particularly beautiful feathery flower heads in bright blue throughout summer and this cultivar does exceptionally well in UK gardens.

So, add in these trouble-free unusual annuals; an abundant green space is what awaits you when there’s luscious, lovely, love in a mist!

Phlox is an elegant plant which comes in a variety of sizes and colours and copes well whether in full sun or partial shade. This makes it a fantastic space-filler for borders as it is so versatile.

The flower clusters come in a range of shades from fresh white, bright pink and even deep lilac in colour and bloom all summer long, finally fading by mid-autumn.

For a tall variety perfect in the back of a border, look for ‘Blue Paradise,’ which grows to 1.2 metres tall. For a smaller variety which packs some punch in the colour department, look for the ‘Peacock Neon Purple’ cultivar.
