Small garden design ideas: Young Gardeners of the Year

Every year I organise a huge gardening competition to find the best young gardeners in Britain. Students from six of the country’s leading horticultural colleges design and build show gardens. The aim is to show what can be achieved with a small space, especially for city gardens.

It’s great to see young people getting into gardening and horticulture. And I am always impressed by their talent and innovation. They are full of fresh, clever ideas that even seasoned gardeners like myself can take inspiration from.

Here’s a look at their designs from last year, and ideas on how to make the most of a small garden space.

Using sound – Shuttleworth College

Creating a tranquil garden, especially in a city, can be a challenge. But acoustic planting can help. Students used bamboo against hit and miss fencing, which helps deaden external noise. Bamboo is hollow so it can make a great sound screen.

They also installed a soothing water feature. The gentle splashing can be really relaxing when you’re sitting out in the garden. It also goes to show that you can use water in a small space.

Students also planted hebes and buddlejas to attract wildlife like birds, bees and butterflies that really bring a garden to life.

Entertaining – Writtle College

Writtle wanted to create a garden where people could enjoy themselves, rather than work. After all, entertaining friends and family is one of the benefits of having a great garden!

They started by building a bar to serve food and drinks. The decoration was inspired by pub interiors and they made great use of recycled glass bottles.

They even turned a piano into a water feature!

Students also put in an outdoor kitchen, and considered space to grow fresh produce too. The raised planters were filled with veg and herbs, all within easy reach of the bar stools.

Relaxed – Chichester College

Sitting out in the garden is what makes all the hard work worthwhile, and students at Chichester College thought carefully about seating areas. They created a secluded space under the pergola for evening dining, and put a bench at the top of the garden.

This is a great idea because it means you can follow the sun around the garden and make the most of it all day long.

They also kept the garden low maintenance by using Astroturf. It’s a great alternative to grass if you have a shady city garden, or a balcony garden with no soil. Plus, it means no mowing!

Weatherproof – Capel Manor College

Many small and city gardens can be exposed to the elements, especially without the protection of large trees. Students from Capel Manor decided to build a hardy, year-round garden that would always look great.

They created sheltered spots to protect plants from the wind, and chose hardy varieties that would withstand cold temperatures.

They also planted some multi-stemmed trees to add shade and shelter. Plus they installed a water butt to harvest and store rainfall. Importantly, it was kept as a decorative feature with the use of old guttering.

Come rain, wind, cold and drought, their garden will look spectacular.

Structural – Askham Bryan College

You can put large features in small gardens, and here’s the proof. Students built the garden around a huge metal domed frame. It’s a fantastic focal point and helps to give the garden a sense of height.

It’s also the perfect frame for growing scented climbers, which would create a fragrant seating area. You could sit out under a dome of sweet scent!

And did you notice the floor under the metal dome? Made from dozens of wine bottles sunk neck down into the ground to make a stylish glass base for the seating area.

Students also installed a large water feature and living vertical wall garden to add to the structural feeling.

Tropical – Bridgwater College

Students at Bridgwater College were inspired by the idea of taking the indoors out. Thanks to our warmer summers there are loads of tropical plants that will thrive outdoors in Britain.

They planted palm trees, bougainvillea and the bird of paradise plant to make you feel as if you’re on holiday abroad.

They also added in a beach hut style greenhouse and kept all the wood a pale colour to add to the tropical feel. A bit of white gravel on the floor and you could be on a lush island instead of at home!

Indoor plants are my favourite way to garden over winter. I love the dramatic red poinsettia and bright flowers of indoor cyclamen.

I also recommend trying Christmas azalea, Christmas cactus (Schlumberga) and orchids – either Phalaenopsis or cymbidium. They are much easier to grow than people think and all bring a touch of life and colour to your home.

One of the most common problems with Christmas plants like poinsettia is that they begin to wilt and die almost as soon as you get them home. They continue to decline no matter what you try. And you think you’re a plant killer.

But the truth is that the problems started before you got anywhere near it. Winter houseplants, especially poinsettia, are tender and die in cold weather. Icy draughts from open doorways in the shop can fatally damage plants before you buy them.

Make sure you buy good quality plants from a reputable supplier and check that they aren’t kept in cold conditions. You should also ask the shop to wrap them in paper or plastic bags to protect the foliage as you take the plant home. Even the journey from shop to car can harm a poinsettia!

Plants need stable conditions, so temperature fluctuations from central heating can stress them. Don’t put them above radiators or near fires, as this dries them out.

And keep them away from the porch and the front door – icy draughts from outside can damage the foliage. Any sheltered spot with bright light levels is ideal.

How to water houseplants

Overwatering is the single biggest killer of houseplants. We call it ‘killing by kindness’. You should only water plants when the surface of the compost appears dry.

I always recommend the standing water technique. Instead of pouring water onto the compost, stand the pots in a tray or sink in an inch of tepid water. Leave for five minutes, allow to drain and put the pots back. This lets roots take up only what they need without drenching the plant.

Or you can plunge the pots into a sinkful of tepid water and hold there until no more air bubbles appear. Then allow to drain as before.

If you have houseplants that like humid conditions, such as orchids, keep them in the bathroom. Or fill a saucer with pebbles and cover with water. Sit plants on the saucer, so they get the humidity without waterlogged roots.

You can also mist houseplants with spray water. It adds to the humidity and is welcomed by plants from tropical climates like orchids and poinsettia.

If you get out in the garden, remember to spruce up your containers too!

Roses are one of the most popular plants in the world. They symbolise love and romance, and they offer beautiful blooms, attractive foliage and a floral fragrance. Plus they are perfect for cutting and make great vase displays.

There are so many different types of rose – there is one for every garden and position. Shrub and bush roses are all ideal for beds and borders. Climbers and ramblers bring colour to walls and fences, while patio and standard roses are perfect for containers.

Bush roses are the most common varieties. There are two types: hybrid teas and floribundas. Hybrid teas are classic roses, while floribunda means ‘many-flowering’ and they have smaller but more plentiful flowers.

Container or bare root

You can buy rose plants in two forms. Container roses have been grown in a pot, while bare root varieties are grown in the ground and dug up. Their roots are then wrapped up before being sold.

Bare root roses are often cheaper to buy because they are easier to produce.

When and where to plant a rose bush

Never plant roses where you have grown them before. They are susceptible to diseases and planting a new one in the same soil may put it at risk.

Plus, roses are hungry plants and they drain nutrients from the soil. Dig in plenty of organic matter before you start.

Plant new roses in winter ready to get growing in spring. Make sure you choose a day when the ground is not frozen solid.

Most roses need a sheltered spot in full sun, but there are a few varieties for shade too. If you’re planting multiple roses, plant diagonally rather than in straight lines, and leave at least 45cm between each bush.

How to plant a rose bush

Dig a hole that is wider and deeper than the root ball. Fork over the bottom to loosen the soil and make it easier for the roots to grow. You can boost potassium levels, which are important for roses, by adding some chopped banana peel.

Place the rose in the hole and make sure it isn’t too deep. You’ll see a mark on the stem where the soil was previously – this must be level with the surrounding soil in the ground. You can lay a bamboo cane across the hole to check.

You should also ensure that the ‘knuckle’ where the rose has been budded is clear of the soil. Fill in the hole, firm in and water well.

Feeding the rose bush

Feeding your new rose bush will help it get established quicker and boost those blooms. You can buy specialist rose feed which is full of their favourite nutrient: potassium.

But I use banana skins. They are free, and they contain plenty of potassium. Chop up banana peel into pieces and lay it on the surface of the soil around the plant. The yellow outer part of the peel should be facing upwards.

If you have some bananas that go black, you can chop up the entire thing and put it on the soil.
