Orange plants were a big trend at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show. They add a bright zing to any garden border and look great planted alongside other ‘hot’ colours like red and yellow.

To make such a bold colour work in your own garden, buy a few of the same plants and repeat them through the border.

Geum ‘Princess Juliana’

A stunning plant that would look at home in any garden. It’s also widely used in the show gardens – see the gallery here.

Dahlia ‘Bishop of Oxford’

This striking plant has rich orange petals and deep black foliage. It would make a great talking point and give depth to a border.

Tulip Ballerina

I love these pointy petals – they look like flames. Perfect for adding some spring colour to your garden.

Primula Bulleyana

These delicate orange flowers will bloom for months on end in the garden. They are ideal for window boxes and other containers, and give good height to rock gardens.

Rose ‘Easy Does It’

This lovely orange rose has deep shiny leaves. The flowers start off red, and fade through orange and apricot to end a light pink shade. Stunning.

Alstroemeria Flame

Fantastic speckled petals give this plant a real wow-factor. Alstroemeria are great as cut flowers too.

Nasturtium Tropaeolum Majus Alaska

A mix of nasturtium colours, from yellow and orange to a deeper red. It has lovely variegated foliage and the flowers are edible too!

Libertia Ixioides ‘Goldfinger’

This is a striking grass for something a little different in the garden. It will add texture to a border and make a great backdrop for warm-toned flowers.

Begonia Jessica

This begonia bears huge orange flowers with silky petals. It’s a real showstopper and should be given pride of place in the garden.

Dahlia Ludwig Helfert

What a fantastic flower! I love the slim petals – they look like flames licking up into the air. I also love any plant with a name as fun as this one.

To plant a new bed, start by preparing the soil well. Dig it over to loosen it and remove any stones and weeds. You can also add some compost or other organic matter to enrich the soil.

Now design your planting scheme! Keep the plants in their pots and arrange them on the border to check everything looks right. Aim to get larger plants at the back, and lower growing varieties at the front.

But flower colour isn’t just confined to borders. Container gardening lets you grow flowers wherever you like.

For striking displays, choose larger pots. Firstly, this lets you grow bigger plants. Secondly, large pots hold more compost and more water, so your plants will be healthier and produce more flowers.

Line pots with crocks, which are stones or pieces of broken slate that stop soil from blocking up drainage holes. Then add a layer of general purpose compost.

Put your plant in the pot. It should sit so that the surface level of the rootball is flush with the top of the pot. You should never plant a rootball too deep and bury it or the plant may struggle to survive. Add more compost around the plant to fill in the gaps, firm in and water.

Forget terracotta. There’s more to plant containers than flower pots. Here’s some great container gardening ideas, including ways to find new uses for objects you would normally throw away.

Wooden pallets

These have endless uses in the garden. But one of my favourite ideas is to repurpose them as vertical planters. You need to prise out some of the planks and nail them back in to create u-shaped planting pockets.

Line them with a permeable membrane and fill with soil and plants. It’s great for city gardens where there is only wall space.

Baskets on the bike

This is a quirky display. Lush flowering plants are spilling out of baskets and containers mounted on a rusty old bike. The zinc watering can and enamel milk jug add to the vintage style.

Put a spin on an old wooden barrel by using it to grow leafy plants. This would also work with salad leaves or other small container crops.
