The origins of container gardening can be traced far back into ancient history. Initially, gardeners used them for edible and medicinal plants in Greece, China, Egypt and India. Over time, pots and containers became more popular and were used to grow all kinds of plants.

The use of container planting as garden decoration was popularised in Italy. During the Renaissance, large, ornamental terracotta pots were displayed to great effect in the ornate gardens of the time.

But they were also popular with Roman citizens, who used containers to bring a piece of the countryside into their towns and cities. Homeowners attached boxes of plants and flowers to windows and even placed them on their roofs.

Of course pots and containers are not just for ornamental use – they play a big part in the greenhouse and potting shed too. I’m urging Britain to light up our streets NOW for the NHS this Christmas to bring some festive cheer to the nation and celebrate our incredible keyworkers.

Our incredible NHS workers have been working long shifts in their battle to keep us safe from Coronavirus and will be continuing to do so over winter. So, I’m encouraging Britons to put the cheer back into Christmas and brighten up our streets.

This year let’s do it for the NHS, our emergency services, the delivery drivers, food retailers and all keyworkers to bring some light to their lives and our streets.

However, there is still hope, as the festive season is known to bring joy to the world. Although this year has been difficult to predict what happens next, there’s one thing that’s for sure, and that is Christmas is coming.

British Summer Time has ended and our daylight hours are getting shorter, leaving us with dark and cosy evenings. This means we are getting closer to the festive season and the joy it brings.

Traditionally, many of us put up our Christmas lights at the end of November or start of December. However, this year, we’ve seen stories of people putting up their decorations early, in fact as early as October, to get a head start on the festive feeling!

And what better way to light up our path to the festive season than by brightening up our streets and uplifting our neighbourhoods with lighting displays that spread joy?

I’ve always felt that Christmas is a beacon of hope that lights up the nation during the cold, dark winter months. And for NHS staff and keyworkers, how nice would it be to see their journey home brightly lit after a long shift? It’s this feeling that inspired me to create Illumination Street.

The aim of the campaign is to inspire the British public to celebrate the Christmas spirit by creating spectacular displays.

Last year we saw stunning displays which were a real testament to community spirit, and we have high hopes for this year because we have seen the power that communities have when they come together. We’ve previously seen community gardens transformed from growing havens to Santa’s grotto and front gardens turned into winter wonderlands.

We have seen the country turn to their gardens for respite and solace this summer during lockdown, so why not continue that into the winter?

Thanks to the generosity of the British Garden Centres group, I am able to award prizes to those stunning displays that lift our communities.

Most people are familiar with the camellias that burst into flower in spring but what isn’t so well known is that there are a group of these lovely evergreen shrubs that flower in the autumn. These are known as Sasanquas and many of them have lightly fragrant flowers.

Unusually, you won’t smell the fragrance when sniffing the flower up close, instead you should smell it in the air when walking around the garden. This variety produces gorgeous bright red blooms.

Mahonias are well known for their sweet smelling soft yellow flowers. This evergreen variety has slightly prickly leaves that turn purple in winter, but before then, black berries adorn the plant in clusters. Growing to 1 metre tall, these spreading shrubs grow well in shade.

This lovely short evergreen variety is unusual in that it produces both delightful red coloured fruit and small pitcher shape flowers at the same time throughout autumn. Although the fruits look like strawberries, trust me, they certainly don’t taste like them and are best left for the birds!

With dark bronze, green leaves with a purple tinge, this evergreen give year round colour. I’ve chosen it for its ability to brighten the border at this time of year as well as its striking lime green flowers on red-purple stems in spring.

It’s a great ground cover plant especially for shady difficult sites where it grows well. Although, it’s best to wear gloves when planting or pruning as the sap can cause skin irritation.
