At this time of year, wasps and weevils can be a pest. But a little knowledge of nature turns up tricks to help banish them from your garden.

As gardeners, it can sometimes feel like we’re constantly at war – whether it’s the wrong kind of weather or the pests that are sent to constantly bug us. In late summer, wasps and vine weevil are especially troublesome. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to blitz them without breaking sweat.

Wasps

Adult wasps, like butterflies, feed using a long tube a bit like a drinking straw. This means they cannot eat solid food but instead get all their energy from liquid. Since they need massive amounts of energy to fly, they prefer high- energy, sugary fluids. In nature, this means feeding on nectar, honey and juice from fallen fruit.

A perfect alternative, however, is a sweet fizzy drink—which is why you end up with a cloud of wasps around you when you’re trying to enjoy one in the pub garden. This is especially true of social wasps in late summer, when the food within their colony is running out. So, what can you do to keep wasps at bay?

The most practical thing to do if you still want to enjoy a sweet drink outside is to switch to diet drinks which do not contain sugar. These are far less attractive to wasps than the real deal, so you should see a reduction in how much they bother you straight away. Another tip is to avoid wearing white or yellow when out in your garden since these colours generally attract insects.

Fragranced perfumes, aftershaves and hair products should also be avoided. Perhaps surprisingly, these can fool wasps into thinking you’re a flower that is rich in nectar – rather than a person who just smells like one. You can also chose plants to deter wasps from entering your garden.

Herbs such as spearmint, thyme and lemongrass will all help, as wasps can’t stand them – and they’ll double up as flavouring in your cooking. Alternatively go for flowers such as pennyroyals, geraniums and marigolds, which smell nasty to wasps at the same time as producing beautiful blooms for you to admire.

You can also make wasp traps using old plastic bottles. Simply remove the lid, cut off the top half and invert it to form a funnel, fill the base of the bottle with a sugary solution and place it somewhere prominent where the wasps can find it. They will fly in to get at the sugar and will be unable to escape. To stop bees from falling foul of the trap, add some vinegar to your liquid – which will put them off.

If all else fails, put up a pretend wasps’ nest. Wasps are highly territorial creatures and will launch an aggressive attack on unfamiliar wasps near their nest. Since wasps know this, they will avoid another wasp colony’s territory at all costs. Buy one, or make one out of papiermâché with the kids, and then hang it beneath the eaves of your house.

Vine weevil

The vine weevil is an insect that feeds on a range of decorative plants, especially pot-grown varieties. You’ll know you’ve got vine weevil if plant leaves look like they’ve been nibbled at the edges. At this time of year, adult bugs and grubs are both about, but it’s the grubs you need to worry about most. That’s because the adults will soon die off – while the grubs continue to feed on plant roots throughout winter.

Inspecting pot plants regularly, and physically removing adult weevils, will help to prevent eggs from being laid on your plants. Shake plants over an upturned umbrella or a sheet of newspaper to collect and remove weevils. You can also treat plants with sprays from your local garden centre.

You can also encourage the garden bouncers to come and do a clean-up operation for you. Birds, frogs, toads, hedgehogs and ground beetles will all eat vine weevil adults and grubs, saving you all the hassle. Attracting birds to your garden is not only easy but will also add to the look of your garden.

Add a bird bath and a feeder containing wild bird seed and keep them topped up and you’ll soon see an increase in feathered friends. If you have a pond, leaving water untreated is more friendly to frogs and toads.

Hedgehogs travel up to two miles per night in search of food. Make your garden available to them by making sure there’s a 12cm space at the bottom of your boundary. Attract them by being a little unkempt – leave log piles lying about, spread leaf litter through borders and let an area of the garden go wild. This untidiness is also excellent for attracting ground beetles to.

Put these methods to good use and tell these pests to bug off this summer.

Gardening can sometimes feel like an expensive hobby. Big projects don’t come cheap, plants and tools can be costly and annual varieties need replacing every year. The good news is that there are loads of easy ways to save cash, whether swapping plants with neighbours, hunting out bargains or simply being canny. With clever money-saving tips, you can ensure you’re making the most of your resources and your garden will look terrific.

First up, next time you’re dropping off your rubbish, have a proper hunt around your household waste site. They often set aside items that can be reused and sell them for a charitable donation. These can include spades, forks, plant pots and old mowers. Buy them cheap and give them a polish and a brush-up and they will be good as new. Avoid items that are obviously broken or damaged.

Websites such as eBay and Gumtree can also be a rich source of kit. The Freecycle Network – freecycle.org – is a non-profit grassroots network for people who like giving, and getting, stuff for free. See if there’s a network in your town. If you insist on new, I’d always try to buy quality equipment – it will last longer and you will get better use from it. Next, if it can hold soil, you can plant in it.

You can use old tyres for pots, egg boxes for keeping seeds and even make buckets and barrels into water features. Old dustbins are great for growing potatoes if you drill some drainage holes in the bottom, and guttering can be turned into carrot planters. With some imagination, you will find the most random things can be useful. And keep an eye on the clearance section of DIY and garden centres. They are especially handy for plants that might look a little tired but can be coaxed back to life with a bit of TLC.

I’ve picked up some lovely varieties in the past, many of which are still going strong in my garden. You’ll also find discounts on compost, bulbs, plants and wood-chippings if you are prepared to buy in bulk or out of season. Bulbs, for instance, can be stored for months before planting as long as they are kept dry and in the dark.

To save even more, head off on a woodland walk. There are lots of tree seeds that you can collect up to use to grow your own plants. Look for acorns for oak tress, conkers for chestnuts, pine cones for pine trees and helicopters for sycamores. But don’t dig up wild flowers – you might be breaking the law because many species are protected.

A better way to start the day

Coffee mornings are also a terrific place to pick up cheap plants, especially if you are looking for houseplants. Keep an eye on your community, church or school noticeboards for details. Making your own compost is a brilliant way to recycle and save dosh at the same time. It can be great fun, too. You can compost anything from tea leaves in tea bags to cardboard, old fruit and vegetable scraps. Pick up a compost bin from the council for around £11 – check with them first. If you don’t want a bin, try leaf bags. Fill these with compost and leave them around the back of your shed for about a year and then you should be able to use the composted matter as soil. Make your own compost scoop by cutting diagonally across a large plastic milk carton, keeping the handle intact.

Join a club

Garden clubs are also a good way of sharing expertise, equipment and plants. Joining your local club or allotment society usually only costs a few quid and normally means you can borrow a load of stuff and get discounts at garden centres nearby. They can be super useful if you need to get your hands on large equipment like leaf shredders, blow vacs and rotavators. Garden clubs also provide advice and friendship. Many let you share cuttings, so if you’ve got a chrysanthemum, mint or rosemary that is growing wild, offer to swap some for a neighbour’s geranium, honeysuckle or azalea.

If your fence, shed or patio is looking a bit worse for wear, don’t spend loads of money redoing it, give it a revamp instead. For fences, get hold of a jet wash and give it a blast down. Then use a fence stain or outdoor paint to give it a bit of life – don’t just go for boring brown, either. You can pick up an amazing range of bright colours. You can bring a patio back to life with a jet wash and Jeyes Patio Power Outdoor Cleaner or similar and then replace cracked slabs. With a bit of elbow grease, it will feel and look brand new.

Free Seeds and Easy Plant Labels

Also, keep an eye out for plants such as poppies, hollyhocks and sunflowers and, as soon as they start to set seed, collect them. I like to use empty Tic-Tac boxes as storage containers – they’re the perfect size. Otherwise, freezer bags are good. When it comes to germinating, egg boxes, toilet rolls and newspapers rolled lengthways, then cut to size, are ideal. They rot away when you plant them. And head to a coffee shop where you can pick up some of those wooden coffee stirrers.

Get a marker pen and write the plant name on, then pop it in the ground next to the plant for a free label. You can use old wooden spoons for larger plants – it creates a great kitchen-garden feel. Hotel shower caps make super cloches, as do empty 1.5 litre pop bottles cut in half. And those free slippers you get on some airlines are perfect to stop you getting a slug stuck between your toes if you’re nipping outside.

Finally, be season aware. If you are not keeping a close eye on the weather, you will risk losing plants to drought or extreme heat or cold. In summer, a fairly cheap watering system can pay huge dividends when you go away on holiday. In winter, a cold frame can protect vulnerable species against the worst ravages when the temperature drops.

Remember, plants such as geraniums and fuchsias should be brought inside. Put them in a greenhouse or porch where it is cold and frost-free. They will survive the winter and grow bigger and stronger every year.

Making your own pots and containers can be great fun – and provide some quirky interest for the garden.

It’s about adding a bit of personality as well as putting recycling to good use.

Filling fine

You can use anything that will hold soil. Germinating seeds in egg boxes, potting on young plants into Costa coffee cups or even planting mini bay trees in buckets. Here are some quirky container ideas that I’ve found useful in the past.

Bin there, done that

Dustbins are great for growing potatoes. Drill holes into the base and fill about two-thirds full of soil before planting the spuds. Mound up the soil around the new shoots and, as the plant grows, mound up further to keep the leaves as far away from the potatoes as possible. These are especially useful if you are struggling for space or aren’t easily able to kneel down.

The shoe is on the other foot

Old wellington boots make another unusual container. As with dustbins, drill holes in the bottom to aid drainage, then plant. Herbs are ideal for wellies, or even secure them on to a fence panel to make wall hangers – use plastic ties – and fill them with trailing plants like begonias and creeping Jenny.

Adventures of tin tin

Believe it or not, old food cans also make great pots. Modern can openers have done away with sharp edges, so, positioned on a shelf just outside the back door with their original labels, they can look really stunning for herbs. Just remember to include holes in the bottoms to help drainage, and take off any remaining sharp edges with a file. An old washing-up bowl will make a great trough. Kids, can use them to create their own colourful little gardens. And finally, plastic takeaway food trays can have a second life as seed trays. They are perfect for sowing, and storing seeds.
