Five plants that are easy to please

If you are a novice gardener or you are tackling a new plot or have just moved home – there are some plants that need to be high on your list. They are also essential if you have finally decided to tackle that desolate dumping ground out the back. If you are about to go to the garden centre but are not sure what you are after, here are my top five:

1. APPLE TREE

Number one has to be an APPLE tree. They don’t have to be massive – you can buy dwarf versions for tubs– and they give a great deal of pleasure. They are very sturdy and easy to grow. Once planted they don’t need a huge amount of care and attention. In spring you’ll get masses of beautiful blossom, attracting bees. Later you’ll have marvellous fruit and fantastic autumn colour. If it’s a single tree, chose a self-pollinating variety. The apple tree is a winner all-round.

2. HERBS

Next I’d suggest some HERBS. Varieties such as oregano, basil, thyme and parsley are all easy to grow in containers or sunny borders on their own. They’re relatively cheap and only need a light trim. Rosemary is a very giving plant with evergreen foliage and masses of purple-mauve flowers.

3. FORSYTHIA

Another good shrub that is extremely low maintenance but will put a smile on your face every spring is FORSYTHIA. You will see masses of golden yellow flowers early on in March. Forsythia Lynwood, a particular favourite of mine, is quite a big shrub, but can be clipped back. It will tolerate most soils and is
incredibly sturdy.

4. HONEYSUCKLE

An essential plant for going up the side of a fence, garage or wall is HONEYSUCKLE. It’s a semi-evergreen climber, which means it’ll give cover and colour over the winter. In the summer it produces masses of elegant, fragrant flowers. Honeysuckle Halliana flowers in white with a yellow throat and is very heavily scented. Plant a Dutch early Belgica and Dutch late Serotina into the same hole and you’ll have flower colour from May through to September. They all have translucent red berries that are attractive to birds.

5. BUDDLEJA

BUDDLEJA is immensely hardy and extremely low maintenance. With long panticles of flowers it’s a very tall plant but can be clipped into size. There are dwarf varieties too. It will bring butterflies and bees into the garden, is quite cheap and comes in many colours – from reds to blues and purples.

I love pottering around the garden for hours on end without a care in the world.

Sadly, not everyone has the luxury of time – or the energy or ability to keep a large space under control. But with some tactical planting it is relatively easy to create a garden that is not going to be time intensive.

Evergreens are ideal for functional foliage. They look tidy, won’t need masses of pruning and provide privacy and block sound. A row of conifers along a border will remove the need for almost anything else.

Planting

For something smaller, ornamental conifers and lesser trees – dwarf cherries, in particular – are also nice-looking and easy-care. It is actually less labour intensive to plant up borders. Bare earth attracts weeds and within a season you will have a jungle.

Try rhododendrons, hydrangeas and flowering hypericum. They won’t need masses of pruning or feeding and will keep the ground beneath them relatively weed-free. Put down weed-blocking material after planting your beds or borders. Once covered in chipped bark, it will stop anything getting through. For colour, plants that come up every year – iris, lupins, gladioli, tulips, daffs – will brighten your garden without costing a fortune.

Cutting

A lawn will need cutting, whatever you do to it. But low-maintenance and drought tolerant lawn seed mixes are available that won’t need to be cut or watered as often. For beds backing on to the house, thorny varieties of shrub such as pyracantha or berberis are hardy, slow-growing and won’t need pruning more than once a year, if that.

Replace gravel with paving – it is easier to keep clear. Every garden will need a certain amount of general tidying but you can mitigate. Don’t plant deciduous shrubs or trees that will drop their leaves. You can’t stop nature but you can make it more manageable.

If you’ve been somewhere hot and want a reminder of your holiday, try out a palm tree for size. The Chusan palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) is a lovely thick, hairy-trunked palm with beautiful fan-shaped green leaves. It will tolerate British winters, though if you live in a particularly exposed area you might like to give it some protection.

Another favourite is the Torquay palm (Cordyline australis). This has a great long trunk and at the top of it are fine fronds of foliage. Both these palms will survive and thrive in the UK providing we don’t get extremely cold temperatures over the winter. Introducing a palm into the garden adds beautiful architectural shapes. And it couldn’t be easier because they are relatively straightforward to plant. Cordylines are easier to grow than trachycarpus so they tend to be cheaper to buy. You can expect a variety of colours to add to the textures – cordyline comes in gold and purple.

They favour soil that is well-drained with added organic matter – and as much sun or dappled shade as you have in your garden. Remember, both of these palms have the potential to grow into tall trees so don’t plant them where they will overshadow the rest of your garden or a greenhouse – or a neighbour. A bit of space will allow you to really appreciate their full majesty. They couldn’t be more different to our British native species. Their trunks become almost cork-like over time and they will add real personality to your garden, front or back.

There is something about lying down on a deckchair or lounger and looking through the fronds of a palm at blue sky above. You could be anywhere in the world. You might be living in a suburb in Sidcup or Sunderland but with a beautiful palm tree you could just as easily be in the Mediterranean.
