Haven Gardening Ambassador 2016

I’m absolutely thrilled to announce a new partnership with Haven holiday parks, for whom I will be a Gardening Ambassador for 2016.

“We are very proud of our picturesque and landscaped holiday parks sitting on the Great British coast, ” says David Smith, Head of Holiday Home Marketing. “Here at Haven we are very excited to be partnering with David as we know our holiday home owners are very keen gardeners. There are over 20 gardening clubs across our 36 UK holiday parks that showcase a real sense of community and help add a fantastic natural feel to the park surroundings.”

We will be producing lots of exciting videos and blogs full of projects for families and people of all ages, including ‘Gardening holiday projects for kids’, ‘Butterflies, birds & bees – how to attract local wildlife’ and ‘Indoor micro gardens.’

We will also be running a fantastic competition with Haven’s holiday home owners to find a gardening champion from one of their parks! The winner of the competition will receive £250 of gardening vouchers, and I will do an exclusive gardening showcase at the winner’s holiday park that will be interactive and full of practical hints and tips.

Engaging children with gardening is an incredibly rewarding pursuit. It’s not only about teaching them a level of respect and understanding of nature; it’s also a fantastic way to bring adults and children together in a shared activity. This sharing of an element of success and enjoyment in gardening as a family and as a school can play an important part in the development of children.

There are literally tons of great activities you can do. If you’re a school that has a school garden you’ve probably already identified many different ways of teaching kids about gardening. Certainly with key stage one and two in primary schools there’s plenty there to do within the curriculum. But if you’re a secondary school that’s interested in getting gardening going, here are a few great projects that you can put together.

We’ve listed out our ‘magnificent seven’ projects to add to an existing school garden, or they could be the beginnings of a new school garden.

The first one is smells. Involving plants that engage in different senses with children is absolutely key. For instance, there’s a cosmos that smells of chocolate; lemon scented verbena, or Lippia citriodora, smells like lemon sherbet; there’s even a pelargonium that smells of cola! There is an incredible range of fragrant plants that you can incorporate into the garden that will attract even the most uninterested child. If you visit your local Cultivation Street Ambassador garden centre, they’ll be able to highlight a whole list of different fragrant plants! The bottom line is, bringing fragrance into your school garden will engage kids very quickly.

While we’re sticking with fragrance, a small herb garden is a great way to start. You can do this in containers even if your school has no garden at all. A raised bed filled with compost is an ideal place for herb gardens, and they can be made either out of sleepers, perhaps by some volunteer parents, or created with the courtesy of the woodwork department if you’re a secondary school. Things like parsley, oregano, basil and sage are really easy to grow. They have the culinary uses, of course, but they are also stunningly fragrant and beautiful!

Another winner which is great for the kids to do and relatively inexpensive is speedy salad. You can get a hold of a pot, put some compost in, sprinkle the speedy salad seeds into the top, and within a couple of weeks they’re seeing the result. Of course, they get to eat them too. It’s fast, it’s effective, and it’s good education for kids.

It’s not all about eating and growing your own. A school garden that is solely about production to eat is missing out. There are many interesting dimensions to gardening and wildlife such as colour.

Leaves aren’t only green – there are red, yellow, blue, and of course multi-coloured leaves too. Having a section in the garden that shows each of these through different categories of plant – some of the blue foliaged conifers, gold leaves from herbaceous plants perhaps, and multi-coloured (variegated) leaves from shrubs – will teach about different classifications of plants as well as colours.

And while we’re talking about non-plant-specific activities that still involve gardening, attracting beneficial wildlife and insects is loads of fun. Creating little habitats for insects, frogs, hedgehogs can go a long way in educating the kids. But it also gives a bit of animation, a bit of movement, to the garden – and that creates a lot of interest too.

The next one which is always great fun is just growing vegetables themselves. In garden centres right now you can buy peas, which are brilliant for the kids. If they’ve never tasted freshly picked peas, it’s a magical moment when they get that surprising element of sweetness within the pea.

There’s also beans, tomatoes, peppers and loads more. Growing in grow bags can be easier because you can grow them on the tarmac playground if you wish. If you don’t have a school garden then just a growbag, a watering device to help it keep going, a few bamboo canes and the plant itself is a great way to get started. It’s relatively inexpensive and you get some quick results.

The last of our magnificent seven is pumpkins. You can either grow them from seed or go to a garden centre and buy them as young plants. They produce stunning fruits which can of course be used as they turn orange for Halloween. But pumpkins are not just about Halloween; you can make incredible soup out of them, and the seeds make a tasty snack. What’s really terrific though is that because we harvest them for late October, it’s a great way to engage kids in gardening over a longer period.

No need to feel overwhelmed if you’ve got lots of jobs you want to tackle in the garden. Improving and even transforming your garden doesn’t require you to set aside a whole weekend. Small projects can be finished in the space of an hour, or even less.

In fact, I think the ‘little and often’ approach is much more effective. Great gardens are long-term projects. Plus, taking your time makes gardening enjoyable rather than stressful, and you don’t feel exhausted at the end of it.

Try carving out a little time here and there to get on top of your garden. Instead of striving to create a ‘perfect’ garden, just aim to spend more time outside and make it a bit nicer each day.

Sometimes just an hour will give you time to get planting. And the quickest road to plant impact is using containers. Add a splash of colour to pots and patios and bring flowers to a spot where you can see them from the house. They illuminate doorways, windows and patios.

Fill large containers by planting around a taller central plant like conifer, grass or flowering shrub like fuchsia.

There are endless ways to create a stunning container garden. Choose a colour theme or mix different pot sizes and materials. Grow herbs and fruit like strawberries and let trailing plants run down the sides of containers.

Hedges can easily get out of hand and start casting too much shade. And they make the rest of the garden look untidy. Keep on top of them with a thorough trim.

The best time to prune a hedge depends on what type it is. Prune flowering hedges after flowering has finished. Deciduous hedges should be pruned in winter and evergreen hedges pruned in spring. And give any hedge a good tidy up in the summer too.

Mulch is a layer of organic material, like compost or leaf mould, that is applied over the soil surface. It has many benefits including adding nutrients to the soil, locking in moisture and preventing weed growth.

Mulching is a great way to improve the soil around established plants to get better growth and more flowers.

Start by removing any weeds and apply a thick layer (5cm) of mulch over the bare soil. Make sure the mulch doesn’t touch plant stems or they may rot. Just doing one bed at a time will make mulching a manageable project. Get more mulching tips here.

If you have a spare hour it pays to get the patio ready. That way you’re not wasting time when a sunny weekend arrives!

Clean half the patio at a time by moving pots and furniture to the other side. Brush off all the debris with a stiff bristle brush. Then mix up a bucket of patio cleaner or soap and water and brush it over the patio, giving it a bit of a scrub to remove dirt.

And get rid of weeds. You can use a weedkiller or pour boiling water on them. If you want to prise them out with a knife, make sure to fill in the gaps with sand. Otherwise you will simply create a wider home for more weeds to take root.

I know it’s the biggest garden chore. But a regular mowing regime will make your lawn healthier, greener and more drought-resistant.

One of the worst things you can do is to cut it really short, hoping you will have to mow less often. This scalps the grass, weakening it and allowing weeds to get established in bare spots.

Start growing your own veg by sowing a few seeds in pots. You don’t need a whole plot – easy crops like salads and radishes will happily grow in containers.

Fill pots with general purpose compost and sow seeds thinly according to the packet instructions. Cover with a little compost and water in. Place somewhere sunny and keep the compost moist.

For long-lasting crops, sow a few seeds every two weeks. If you sow everything at once you will end up with a glut.

Plants in containers need more regular watering than those in borders because their roots have less space and less soil. They need watering even when it’s not that hot and sunny – windy weather can easily dry them out.

Pots and hanging baskets are also often sheltered from rainfall by being against walls or under the eaves of your house. Check that they aren’t drying out by pushing your fingers a couple of centimetres into the compost. If it feels dry, they need watering.

In dry periods, place pots in a tray and fill with a reservoir of water. The plants will draw water up from the roots and you just have to top up the tray to water all the pots at once.

And here’s a good tip to keep hanging baskets thoroughly watered. Take them down and plunge them into a bucket of water. Wait until the air bubbles stop escaping and the soil is saturated, then remove them from the water and hang back up.

Deadhead plants

This is a great simple gardening job because it’s easy and has multiple benefits. Deadheading plants removes unsightly wilting flowers and encourages the plant to produce more blooms. It also stops plants running to seed – many stop flowering altogether when this happens.

TRIM LAWN EDGES
