    Getting a gardener’s workout on the set of Love Your Garden

    You don’t need an expensive gym membership to get fit – just your garden. It’s perfect if you want to lose weight and build up your stamina. Make a commitment to get outside for a couple of hours a week for the gardener’s workout.

    Gardening is a great way of keeping fit and active, both physically and mentally. It’s great to know such a popular hobby is also fantastic for your health and wellbeing.

    Mowing and digging

    According to nutritionists at Loughborough University, mowing, digging and planting for two to three hours can help burn off up to one pound a week.

    And 10 to 20 minutes a day in the garden will help top up vitamin D levels in your system and improve your mood by lowering stress levels. Among other things, vitamin D can help reduce cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease and type 2 diabetes.

    The study also found that in general, gardening improves mood and cuts anxiety and depression. Being outside, doing something emotionally satisfying and physically tiring helps produce feel-good endorphins and reduce stress.

    Body benefits

    Gardening gives all major muscle groups a good workout, including your legs, arms, buttocks, stomach, neck and back. Some experts believe gardening can burn up to 300 calories an hour.

    Another study in the American Journal of Public Health looked at 200 active gardeners comparing them to non-gardening folk. Female gardeners were 46% less likely to be overweight than non-gardeners. The percentage was even higher for men – 62% per cent less likely to be overweight than non-gardening men. Male gardeners weighed 16lb less and women 11lb less than their non- gardening counterparts.

    And none of this takes account of the added benefits of growing and eating your own fruit and veg!

    Carrots, strawberries and tomatoes are all high in beta-carotene – a natural chemical in their red-orange pigments that converts to vitamin A in the body.

    They are known by nutritionists as happy fruit because they boost your immune system and are easy to grow.

    Getting started

    Remember to pay attention to your body and exertion levels. The gardener’s workout is like any exercise.  Have a stretch before you get started and try not to do too much at once.

    Make sure you drink plenty of water, especially if it’s a hot day, and take regular breaks. Mind your back too – lift using your knees rather than bending your spine.

    If you’re like me, the excitement of gardening itself gives you a lovely feeling, and you won’t notice you’re exercising!

    Just don’t overdo it. Losing weight should combine a calorie-controlled diet with physical activity. But it’s so much nicer when it includes creating a beautiful outdoor space.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

    I went to Binley Wood School in Coventry to visit their marvellous school garden and talk to the pupils about growing their own fruit and veg.

    We planted young tomato plants in their greenhouse, and I showed them the best way to water their new plants. It was fantastic to meet all the pupils and staff who have worked so hard on their school garden.

    Together, we launched Hozelock’s Gardening for Life Campaign, an initiative to get kids to spend more time in the garden.

    A survey by Parentdish for Littlewoods found that 47% of British children spend less than two hours a day outside, which for me is a saddening statistic.

    Gardening is a great hobby for people of all ages, but it’s particularly special for children. It’s a fun and healthy activity, plus it’s magical to see children’s sense of wonderment and satisfaction as they watch plants grow.

    Gardening for Life is a great campaign to get more children into gardening, plus it’s an easy way to keep them occupied in the school holidays!

    Growing your own chillies on a windowsill is fun and will save you money – they will go on producing fruit year after year. They have a long cropping season, so you could be harvesting fresh chillies from late spring to December. And chillies can be frozen, so you’ll never be without that spicy heat in your kitchen!

    During summer the plant can sit outside – there’s nothing like a breeze to give it more strength. But to get chillies off to a good start, you’ll need a sunny windowsill or greenhouse.

    You can buy chillies as pre-grown baby plants or produce your own from seed. The best seed varieties are red, yellow, long and short.

    The seeds can be difficult to germinate because they don’t like the cold. I wrap mine in muslin cloth, tie it with some wool and soak it overnight in a Thermos flask warmed to about 45C.

    In the morning, fill baby pots about the size of your palm with ordinary compost. Plant a couple of seeds at a time into each pot about 1.5cm below the soil. Then firm the compost down and soak thoroughly with warm water.

    Chillies like a steady temperature of 28C and you’ll want to keep them moist but not drowning. A heated propagator is great, but a warm, sheltered windowsill is fine too.

    In about three weeks, you should see signs of germination. But don’t worry if they’re slow to emerge – chillies sprout when they’re good and ready.

    When seedlings appear, ventilate the propagator, but don’t let the temperature drop too much at night. Use a normal fertiliser at about quarter strength – seaweed extract is good for them.

    If you buy seedlings rather than growing your own, choose a warm windowsill or greenhouse and keep them moist.

    As the weather begins to warm up, take them out in the day to toughen them up and bring them in at night.

    After the plants start to flower, keep feeding them regularly. I recommend using tomato food to encourage more chillies to grow.

    The plant produces fruit on sidestems, so when it has reached a decent size, pinch off the tops of the vertical stems. The more side stems, the more chillies.

    Use the fruit as soon as it’s harvested. Nothing beats the tang of a fresh chilli – just be careful not to burn your mouth!
