Sow Outdoors

Sow outdoors February to September. Make narrow trenches 1.5cm deep and spaced 30cm apart. Separate and unroll the seed tape and place in the trench. Place soil or a stone on one end and gently pull the tape straight, then carefully cover with fine soil. Keep the soil moist and weed free at all times. Seedlings should start to appear after approximately 7-14 days. If seedlings do happen to get overcrowded then thin the crop as it grows by taking plants evenly from the row. It is good practice to water well after thinning out, to wash any dislodged soil back around the roots of the remaining plants. Sow a new row every 2-3 weeks to extend the harvest period, ensuring there are always perfect, crisp young roots available. Early sowings will benefit from cloche protection.

Keep well watered during dry spells as this will help prevent the roots from splitting. Cabbage root fly is the only common pest and in the unlikely event that it becomes a problem can be prevented by growing plants under a fine insect netting. Do not leave the tops of radishes or unwanted roots lying around after harvesting, the scent of them can attract cabbage root fly.

Harvest from April to October. Harvest alternate roots from the row, leaving more space for the remainder to grow on. Water the remaining roots well afterwards to replace any dislodged soil.

Sow indoors March to April. Sow thinly 0.5cm deep into trays of compost. Water well and place in warm, light position, away from cold draughts and out of intense, direct sunlight. Keep the compost just moist and be careful not to overwater, the compost should almost dry out before it is watered again. Seedlings should start to appear in approximately 7-21 days. Carefully transplant the seedlings to individual pots when they are large enough to handle and keep moist. In April to May, acclimatise plants to outside conditions, avoiding late frosts. Place plants outside in a sheltered spot during the day and bring them inside again at night when temperature fall. Do this for a week or two, until the plants have hardened off. Then transplant to a sunny growing position 60cm apart. Plant seedlings deep, right up to the first set of leaves and be sure to firm the young plants in well to prevent the plants from rocking in the wind, which can damage their delicate roots. Keep the soil moist and remove any weeds as they appear.

Young brassica plants are a real favourite with pigeons and later in the summer caterpillars can also become a problem. If you use a fine enough netting, held well above the plants, this will stop both the pigeons eating the young leaves and the cabbage white butterflies from reaching the plants to lay their eggs. Sow outdoors May to July. Sow thinly 2.5cm deep directly where they are to grow, in rows spaced 30cm apart. Keep the soil moist and weed free at all times. Seedlings should start to appear approximately 7-21 days. If necessary thin out by taking alternate plants, allowing the remainder to grow on. Thin seedlings out to a final spacing of 10cm apart, 5cm apart if growing space is limited and only baby beet are required. It is good practice to water well after thinning out, to wash any dislodged soil back around the roots of the remaining plants. Sow a new row every 2-3 weeks to extend your harvest period, ensuring there are always perfect, tender young beets available.
