Sow outdoors March to August. Sow thinly 1.5cm deep directly where they are to grow, in rows spaced 25cm apart or in large patio pots. Keep the soil moist and weed free at all times. Seedlings should start to appear after approximately 7-14 days. Thin seedlings out to a final spacing of 15cm apart. It is good practice to water well after thinning out, to wash any dislodged soil back around the roots of the remaining plants. Sow a new row every 2-3 weeks to extend your harvest period. Early sowings will benefit from cloche protection in cold weather.

Sow outdoors in May. Pumpkins can be sown outdoors for ease. Choose a sunny, sheltered location for best results and wait until the soil has warmed up, ideally to around 10°C or more. If the soil is very heavy, cold or waterlogged an indoor sowing is preferable.

Pumpkins like good fertile soil so it’s worth digging in a slow release fertiliser or some organic matter before you start. Sow edge downwards directly where the plants are to grow, 5cm deep and spaced 90cm apart. Gently firm the soil and keep moist. Remove any weeds as they appear. Early sowings will benefit from cloche protection.

When stems have grown to the thickness of a pencil, transplant them to their final growing position. Make 10cm deep holes in the soil with a dibber, spaced 15cm apart, in rows 30cm apart. Place seedlings in the hole and just water them in. This will bring soil down around the roots without compacting it and restricting the future growth of the stems. Keep the soil moist and remove any weeds as they appear.
