Start by sowing seeds in pots indoors in April to May to give them a good start. The seedlings can then be planted out in May to June when the risk of frost has passed. Alternatively, seeds can be sown in the ground in May to June.

This can be done by placing them into a coldframe for a week before planting. However, if you don’t have a coldframe then move the plants outdoors during the day and bring them back indoors overnight. Then the following week leave them out there for the whole time in a sheltered spot.

Plant out in a position with moist but well-drained soil. They are thirsty plants too, so it’s a good idea to sink a plant pot or bottle next to their planting spot to allow water to drain down to the roots. To boost fruit growth feed the squashes every 10-14 days with a fertiliser that’s high in potash when flowers appear.

Most varieties will produce fruits approximately 15 weeks after sowing the seeds. For summer squashes, these can be harvested when the fruit is quite small and immature – these don’t tend to store as well as winter squashes. Winter squashes can be left to mature on the plant, then harvested before the first frost.

You can sow the seeds between March and May. To get the best chances of germination, sow a few seeds in each station.

Sow at 1-2cm deep, each station 10cm apart and leave 30cm between each row.

Then, when the seeds have germinated and the seedlings are large enough to be handled, they can be thinned out to keep the strongest seedling in place.

Sow and grow salsify in a spot with plenty of sunlight with well-drained soil. It’s important to keep the area weed free, but use your hand to weed because using tools can harm the root.

They can also be grown in deep raised beds and large containers with a light soil. Prepare the soil with an all-purpose fertiliser a week before sowing.

To care for the plants, they don’t demand much – in dry weather simply water.

Salsify roots can be harvested from September to December and can be lifted gently with a fork.

Before harvesting, the ground should be protected from winter frosts using straw. Alternatively, the roots can be left in place in the ground and will produce edible shoots next year.

In recipes, salsify can be used in place of parsnips. However, their subtle taste is fantastic when steamed and served with a knob of melted butter.

The plant is edible, however the roots and leaves test best before the flower blooms.

The flowering shoots can be eaten too, in a similar fashion to asparagus. Either eaten raw or cooked. Also, the flowers can be eaten and go well as part of a salad.

It’s around 77% water, with the remaining 19% being carbohydrates, and 3% protein. When eaten, it’s a good source of fibre, vitamin C, potassium and manganese.

Beetroots are easy to grow, so they are a great vegetable to start with for beginners. To have your own harvest of beetroots sow seeds from March to July in a well-drained soil. Before sowing, it’s ideal to prep the area with plenty of organic matter to give it a good head-start.

When the seedlings grow to 2.5cm high, the seedlings can be thinned out. Alternate plants can be pulled up once they’re golf ball size, then the ones that are left to mature can be lifted when they’re around the size of a cricket ball.
