Snap peas are extremely versatile, the sweet, succulent and crunchy pods can be eaten whole when young, just like mangetout peas or they can be allowed to mature and then shelled for the tasty peas inside. This gives an even longer harvest period, especially when repeat sowings are made. The pods are produced in pairs, making picking extra easy and the plants show good disease and mildew resistance for reliable, high quality crops.

Sow outdoors March to June. Sow seeds 5cm deep directly where they are to grow, in rows spaced 75cm apart. Keep the soil moist and weed free at all times. Provide support for the plants as they grow larger, this will also make picking easier. Stringing 75cm tall netting along the row or placing twiggy ‘pea sticks’ for them to climb over is ideal. Seedlings should start to appear after approximately 10-18 days. Sow a new row every 2-3 weeks to extend your harvest period. Early sowings will benefit from cloche protection in cold weather.

Generally peas are trouble free, the most common issue is mildew so a resistant variety such as this is ideal, regular watering in dry spells will also help prevent it. Choose a sunny or partially shaded, sheltered location and wait until the soil has warmed up, ideally to around 10°C+. Then sow thinly directly where plants are to grow. Make a shallow trench 1.5cm deep and cover the seeds with fine soil. Sowing in rows 30cm apart will make it easier to identify and remove any weeds that may appear. Keep the soil moist and weed free.
