1.Pourfect plants:

Harvesting your own water, rather than using tap water, gives you access to a bundle of benefits.

Install a water butt and water is at your fingertips and convenient to use, even in the summer. Water is fed down from the roof and stored in a container with a tap.

Installing one for the greenhouse, shed, garage or your home will give you access to water which is better for your plants than treated water from the tap.

This is because rainwater has the correct pH level to grow plants productively all year round, whereas household water supplies should only be used in the short term to ensure they don’t inhibit growth.

2.Keep control:

Staying on top of pests and weeds without using synthetic treatments isn’t always easy, but it is most rewarding for organic gardeners to overcome the challenge using garden know-how and good old-fashioned elbow grease.

Companion planting, the process of positioning plants that aid neighbouring plants, can be used to help reduce pests. If you want to vanquish whitefly, for instance, plant some marigolds.

Blackfly and greenfly can be kept in check with the use of neem oil or use washing up liquid to eradicate aphids.

For weeds, I find it’s best to just pull them up. Annual weeds, those growing fresh each year, can be easily controlled with a hoe as this cuts the tops off, but perennial weeds, which come back each year – like dandelions and nettles, should be pulled up by the root—the secret is to do this little and often to regain control.

3.Toil-free soil:

Many organic gardeners prefer not to use synthetic feeds and instead enrich the soil to allow the microorganisms make food for the plant naturally.

Just position a bucket at your back door or an enclosed container on your countertop to capture all your veg peelings and then add into a composter. Instead of letting the stems of harvested Brussels sprouts go to waste, return the stems back to the soil through composting—it’ll cut down on waste and does wonders for the ground too.

Leaf mould is brilliant for soil. You can get started with this really easily; buy yourself a hessian sack online and then fill it with leaves, chucking it behind your garden shed over winter to breakdown.

It can give up to 50% more water retention for soils, as well as providing better structure and encouraging soil life, like earthworms, for aeration.

Well-rotted manure can be dug into the garden to give your microorganisms the bacteria they need to thrive and produce healthier soil or simply supplement your soil with organic feeds, which are available from local garden centres.

4.Wild about wildlife:

Encourage more hedgehogs, frogs and birds into your garden and they’ll be great garden protectors; eating any unwanted slugs for you.

Add in a hedgehog house or ample water supply for birds and you’ll begin to see your plants benefit.

A small garden pond will entice in frogs and give a water source to other visiting creatures—just make sure to put a plank of wood as an escape route for any inquiring hedgehogs.

Many beneficial insects have a veracious appetite for greenflies. A single ladybird will eat up to 5,000 aphids in their lifetime. I string together pinecones and position them in the garden as a place for hibernation for little ladybirds and bug hotels are great too.

5.Grow your own:

You can grow your own all year round. Herbs like thyme, rosemary and sage are perfect as perennials. You can even grow your own sauces with chillies and tomatoes or have leaf crops, like salad and cabbage.

Try tasty treats such as asparagus and don’t forget fruits in the form of currents, raspberries, or a cheeky apple tree; all the ingredients to grow your own dinner and, by using these methods, done so organically.

To make the most of what you’re already doing, ensure you water the soil to a depth of 20cm by inserting a soil moisture metre.

You can pick these up for under ten pounds and they save having to check moisture by digging up earth and disturbing delicate root systems.

Moisture depth is important because it means that the water is reaching plant roots. As these aren’t exposed to sun, like the top layers of soil are, risk of evaporation is lower so it’s far more efficient.

Getting the right amount of water to each of your plants is a balancing act. In general, the darker the leaves the more heat they absorb and water they need.

For baskets and boxes, there’s no need to drown them in water until it’s dripping from the bottom. Little and often is best, so try a teacup full of water each day to keep small containerised plants content.

Mains water should always be used sparingly. In peak times, water companies make up for the demand by using groundwater supplies which is bad for the environment—it means they put up prices too.

Grey water can be a resource in such times, but it’s best to understand that this type of water source can also contain contaminants which are bad for soil and edible plants. Instead, some smart watering practices will mean you actually need to water less.

Try giving your garden a drink in early morning or evening to cut down on water evaporation and moving pots into the shade.

If a potted plant has completely dried out, instead of water pooling on the soil’s now crusted surface or running straight off, dunk it into a bucket of water until all the escaping bubbles stop coming out.

You can then repeat and reuse this water for the other plant pots that need it.

Water storing is another facet to gardening that’s worth exploring if you haven’t already.

When giving plants a good dousing, a hose that can give multiple settings is always best.

There are three main approaches for external lighting. First, you can put up permanent lights and these need to be fitted by an electrician.

Second, you can go for low voltage lighting that you can install yourself. Or finally, with most ease, there’s solar lighting.

Practical lighting, that’s installed to grant you round the clock access to the garage or to help you see down the garden path, is best purchased from your local home / DIY store to ensure it is fit for purpose and built to last.

At the click of a switch this will give you electric outside and can be a life saver—especially in the winter to prevent stumbling around in the dark.

These permanent additions are wired into the mains, so that’s why you need a professional to get them going—but they tend to be brighter and so better suited for practical use. If there’s a patch of your plot that you struggle to navigate in the dark, invest in some free-standing lamps or wall fixture lighting wired to the mains.

You can soon shine a spotlight on security concerns with outdoor lighting. Again, these lights are best when properly installed to your mains.

At the back of the house, flood lighting works well and can come with movement sensors to save energy. Research suggests that burglars are put off from evidence of occupancy, such as lighting, so it can function as a deterrent too.

Lighting for ambience is so worth your while. Even some subtle spotlights around the garden paves the way for social activity. Select some low voltage lighting solutions from your local garden centre and, to ensure these can be kept out in all-weather, check it comes with waterproof sockets.

These lights aren’t as bright as those you can turn on with a flick of the switch but are definitely brighter and last longer than solar powered products.

Ambient lighting is also a very cost-effective way of granting yearlong garden access.

Get creative with small lights placed into planted borders or position uplighters on the ground so that beams of light are thrown upwards—couple with decorative trees for a dramatic effect.

Of course the most available light source to us is the sun and storing its energy for use later is extremely effective.

Nowadays you can buy security spotlights that run on solar.

You can pick up very cheaply to give a burst of light for 10-20 seconds at a time before resetting. As these aren’t powered by electricity, they’re great for remote locations.

I have these on the garden path leading to the house, but there’s a whole host of places that benefit from having lighting at your fingertips.

Set these up on the summer house, shed or garden fencing in a place that gets lots of sun but bear in mind that they may struggle to store enough solar during winter months.

Generally, the light is never going to be as bright as lighting that’s wired in, but they do work well as a temporary or portable solution during summer.

For anyone struggling to get enough time out in the garden due to a busy schedule, ample lighting will free you up to carry on gardening into the evening and even night.

Some tasks are best done when out of the heat of the day and I’ve found that removing slugs and snails is a job I can do when the sun’s gone down.

So, identify the areas of the patio or garden you need access to at all hours and focus first on lighting those areas.
