June is a lovely time of the year and an especially busy one in the gardening growing calendar. Greenhouses and cold frames are filled with young seedlings desperate to be planted outside. But before you get started, find out about hardening off plants.

The days are getting longer and often brighter. Traditionally the end of May is the last time before summer that we are likely to experience a frost.

So, it’s very tempting to plant out those young plants straight from their protected environment. But, there is one more stage to go through before doing this – and that is to harden off the seedings.

Hardening off is basically reducing stress on young plants by gradually getting them used to a harsher environment than the one they’ve been growing in. This applies to hardy plants as well as tender plants, vegetables, fruit, and flowering plants.

The easiest way to do this is to put your seedlings outside during the day and bring them in overnight for at least seven days. Then, they can be planted in their permanent growing position for the year, ideally in a slightly shady spot sheltered from excessive wind.

If you have cold frames, you can also put the seedlings into these for seven to fourteen days. Simply close the lid at night until the seedlings are ready to be planted out.

Toughening up young stems.

Young stems are soft and very flexible, especially when they’ve started their life in a protected environment. This is because there’s been no need for them to toughen up.

Placing them outside into a harsher environment on a gradual basis slowly hardens up the stems. Not only does this make them less susceptible to breaking in the wind but also less appealing to slugs and snails that adore tender young stems.

Avoiding damage caused by extreme temperature fluctuations.

Some seedlings, like tomato plants, are very susceptible to leaf damage caused by moving the plants from a warm environment to a much colder one. Plants can also quickly become dehydrated as the cuticle on the leaves has yet to harden which prevents excessive water loss.

Leaf damage interrupts the efficiency of photosynthesis and can result in weaker plants and an inferior crop.

Reducing stress.

Hardening off seedlings gradually means that the plants are exposed to wind, sun, and rain which helps prevent transplant shock. This is an expression used for seedlings that become stunted, don’t grow well, or die from the sudden changes in temperature and exposure to sunlight.

Tomatoes also contain the carotenoid, beta-carotene, which has been found to make you more attractive! A group of people were given either a 12-week dose of beta-carotene or a placebo, and the results showed that the group with the supplement were better looking due to the enhanced yellow and red colouring in their faces.

Generally, the redder the tomato, the more lycopene it has. Interestingly, cooked and processed tomato products are higher in lycopene, so eating a mix of these and fresh whole tomatoes whenever possible will ensure you get all the goodness from these juicy vegetables.

From Public Health England research in 2014, tomatoes were in the top 10 contributors of veg intake in adults and children. It’s not a surprise that this versatile veg is so popular, they’re tasty and tangy, adding lots of flavour to some of our favourite dishes.

Tomatoes are low in carbs, with 95% of the food made up from water content. Even so, there’s plenty of room for goodness in them, as they are a brilliant source of vitamin C, vitamin K and potassium.

Try growing your own tomatoes. There are many sizes to choose, even from the smallest cherry types.

1. You can sow seeds in small pots from late March to early April if they are being grown outdoors. Alternatively, if you will be growing in a greenhouse environment, you can sow seeds from late February to mid-March.

2. When the first flowers begin to open, move the plants into larger pots, a growing bag or plant outside approximately 45cm apart. If they’re going outdoors, they should be ‘hardened off’ to ease the transition by slowly helping them to acclimatise to the weather.

3. There are two growing habits of tomatoes. Cordon grow tall and will require support from a vertical cane and side shoots should be removed regularly. Bush tomatoes don’t need support or removal of side shoots – these grow well in hanging baskets.

4. Water them regularly to keep the soil evenly moist.

5. When the fruit is ripe and fully coloured, they can be picked.

Tomatoes that are processed with high heat contain more lycopene in a form that is easier for the body to use compared to raw tomatoes. However, in the heating process, other essential nutrients such as beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E can be destroyed.

Whether we roast them slowly, or make a cooked sauce, the plant cell walls are broken down which allows us to absorb the lycopene easier.

Sow indoors March to April. Sow 0.5cm deep into individual pots of compost. Water well and place in a warm, light position, away from cold draughts and out of intense, direct sunlight. Keep the compost just moist and be careful not to overwater, the compost should almost dry out before it is watered again. Seedlings should start to appear in approximately 7-14 days. In late May or early June, acclimatise plants to outside conditions. Place pots outside in a sheltered spot during the day and bring them inside again at night when the temperature falls. Do this for a week or two, until the plants have hardened off. Plant out to large patio pots or tubs and place in a sheltered, sunny growing position. Alternatively plant out into a greenhouse border or grow bags. Remove the growing tip of the plant when six or seven trusses have begun to develop and remove any side shoots that appear. This will help concentrate the plants energy where it is need most. Plants will require some support with a trellis or canes as they grow larger and the trusses begin to develop.

For really large crops place the large pots in which the tomatoes are growing onto a grow bag with the top cut away. This way the roots can grow down out of the pot and into the extra compost below.
