The English bluebell, or Hyacinthoides non-scripta has recently hybridised with Hyacinthoides hispanica (Spanish bluebell). This mix has led to more vigorous growth than the native type which could lead to the English bluebell dying out eventually.

Bluebells are often seen growing in partial shade under trees, but are actually what is known as woodland edge plants and can tolerate full sun or full shade in a well-drained soil. Well-suited to growing beneath deciduous trees, they will get the shade in spring and summer when the trees are in full leaf, and sun in the cooler months when the leaves have fallen.

They look lovely grown naturalised in grassy areas. To create that naturalistic look, plant small clumps together, at irregular intervals. Throw the bulbs randomly and plant them where they land for random positioning.

Plant ‘in the green’ bulbs in the ground, at the same depth as they were before. ‘In the green’ means when the plants are in active growth and still have their leaves. When planting this way, late spring is the best time.

For dry bulbs, these should be planted in autumn in a hole at least 10cm deep, with the growing tip facing upwards.

From May to July, bluebells can be divided and replanted, after flowers and before the leaves die back.

Another way of increasing the number of bluebells in your garden is to leave the stems on after the plant has finished flowering and collect the ripe seeds later in the year – sowing them immediately in compost. Germination can be erratic and take a long time, but it’s worth trying, especially if you’ve got a large area to fill on a budget.

When bluebells are growing amongst grass it’s important not to cut the grass until after the leaves of the plant have completely died back. This is usually about 6 weeks after flowering finishes.

Also, be sure not to cut off the foliage when flowering has finished as the plant needs the leaves to process sunlight and transport resources back down to the bulb underground so that it will flower well the following year.

There are more than 250 species of bee here in Britain and we have an estimated 270,000 honeybee hives.

So, as a beekeeper myself, I know the significance of bees for our own wellbeing—without them the human race would struggle to harvest enough food.

In Europe, around a third of bee and butterfly species are declining and almost 10% are threatened with extinction.

Making your garden pollinator-friendly goes a long way to provide our locals bees with food sources and homes to live and once you start taking notice, you’ll begin to identify the different species.

Next time you see a bumblebee, take a look at its tail end—some species are identifiable by their ‘buff-tailed’ or ‘red-tailed’ characteristics.

One of the most beneficial things you can do for bees is grow more flowers.

Cultivars that are rich in pollen or nectar are best as it delivers them a delicious food source—this treasured loot is then taken back to the hive and made it into honey to feed their young.

You can offer nectar sources simply by mowing your lawn less.

In fact, there could be a 30 per cent increase in bee activity by reducing how much you mow, as even weeds and lawn flowers like daisies and clovers keep bees abuzz.

It’s no secret that our flying friends love blue and purple hues, as they can see ultraviolet shades most vividly.

One of the most beneficial things you can do for bees is grow more flowers.

Cultivars that are rich in pollen or nectar are best as it delivers them a delicious food source—this treasured loot is then taken back to the hive and made it into honey to feed their young.

You can offer nectar sources simply by mowing your lawn less.

In fact, there could be a 30 per cent increase in bee activity by reducing how much you mow, as even weeds and lawn flowers like daisies and clovers keep bees abuzz.

It’s no secret that our flying friends love blue and purple hues, as they can see ultraviolet shades most vividly.

Opt for Buddleja (butterfly bush), blue globe thistle and chives to invite in pollinators during summer and autumn.

Abelia × grandiflora is a shrub that displays clusters of pale pink flowers during summer and autumn and you can add it to large borders and beds as it’s well known for attracting bees.

Give your garden bees more ground cover by keeping the space wild wherever possible and going for green instead of grey manmade structures.

For a few years now, I’ve been adding to a wildflower cornucopia at the bottom of my garden and there are ready-to-use wildflower seed balls that you can scatter yourself.

As well as inviting bees into the garden, this works as a safe haven.

Solitary bees like mason bees use mud for constructing their nests while mining bees make their nests in lawn or semi-bare ground—so a green patch of soil can go a long way to keeping them safe over winter.

It can be done by rolling up a length of corrugated cardboard or you can use hollow stemmed bramble, hogweed or bamboo—any that are about 4mm in diameter.

1. An alarming threat to honeybees in the UK right now is the invasion of Asian hornet. Go to nonnativespecies.org to flag any sightings.
1. Instead of using harsh chemicals, spray aphids with washing up liquid or neem oil. Encourage ladybirds and lacewings which will keep aphid populations in check without harm to bees.
1. Spread the word: if you see neat circular cuttings from your plant leaves, it’s most likely caused by leafcutter bees. They won’t harm plants, so don’t spray insecticides as it’s harmful—so think before you spray.
1. You can create a more bee-friendly space by growing nectar rich plants, mowing lawns less, incorporating some hibernating habitats and a supply of fresh water—bird baths are good for bees too!

Woodland areas are increasingly recognised as important for supporting wildlife, clearing pollution and keeping us all cooler, with dappled shade in the summer months. Perhaps for this reason, woodland-themed gardens are on the rise and will feature strongly at Chelsea this year.

While it will take time to create this look in your own garden, if you get started now you can enjoy watching as it gradually turns into a flourishing small woodland area in your garden. If you’re starting with a blank canvass, begin by planting a few container-grown trees, making sure to allow room for ultimate height and spread as listed on the label.

For narrow gardens, Prunus (cherry) ‘Amanogawa’ is a great choice. It is pencil thin and bears fantastic pink blossoms in spring. Combine this with the characteristic purple foliage of Acer palmatum (Japanese maple) in a feature pot and you’ll really make a statement. For wider gardens, you can’t go wrong withan apple such as ‘Laxton’s Superb,’ which will reach 4-8 metres tall and wide and produce delicious dessert apples late in the season or you can buy smaller versions—see your garden centre for advice.

Trees like mountain ash, birch and hawthorn are good trees for a small wooded area in a corner of your garden and are brilliant for birds if grown as a standard.

Water newly planted trees regularly and deeply for the first two years to encourage deep roots to form. At this point – or now, if you already have established trees in your garden – you can underplant with ferns, Digitalis (foxgloves), Helleborus (hellebores) and wildflowers. These will be picked out by dappled sunlight as it streams through your woodland canopy, creating a truly magical feel. You can also naturalise daffodils or snowdrops as a way of planting for spring colour.

At the other end of the spectrum, there is also a higher demand than ever for minimal upkeep gardens within the modern age. If you want a garden that looks good with minimal tending, low maintenance evergreens, like Erysimum (hardy wallflower), Festuca glauca (blue fescue) and Vinca (periwinkle), can help you achieve this effect.

The best way is to encourage hedgehogs, birds and frogs & toads into the garden as bouncers as they will eat loads of slugs. With ample access and places to hibernate, hedgehogs will move in—which not only saves your plants but also these amazing mammals whose numbers have dwindled in recent years.
