Wildlife gardens are increasingly popular, and you don’t need acres of land to encourage birds to feed and nest in your garden – simply plant varieties they love!

Many bird species are declining in Britain because they are losing their natural habitat, but you can help. There are 15 million gardens in the UK, covering 270,000 acres – that’s more than all the country’s nature reserves put together!

Choose plants that flower and seed at different times, so birds can eat natural foods all year round. Climbing plants also provide good cover for birds to roost. My top 10 plants are:

Cotoneaster Horizontalis

A stunning cotoneaster

In autumn this plant will offer birds masses of fruit. Big fans include thrushes, finches and blackbirds, as well as more exotic birds like waxwing.

Corylus Contorta

The catkins and early growth of twisted hazel are ideal for chiffchaff and spring migrants.

Honeysuckle

It’s a great climber for birds, offering berries and cover for them to roost. Thrushes, warblers and bullfinches love it.

Malus Golden Hornet

Fruit from this plant will decay if you leave it untouched, exposing tasty seeds for great tits and greenfinches.

Pyracantha Orange Glow

This plant provides winter berries for thrushes and blackberries.

Rowan

This is a great, compact plant for small to medium gardens. Different species will give berries from July to November, providing a feast for blackbirds and starlings. The white berries however are not as popular!

Festuca Gauteri

Goldfinch and Linnet love this plant’s seed heads.

Ivy

Its flowers attract insects, which birds love to eat, and its winter black berries are a firm favourite of thrushes, waxwings, starlings, jays and blackbirds.

Bidens Solar Garden

Its yellow flowers attract insects that are ideal food for tits, robins and warblers.

Other ways to help

Don’t be too keen to tidy your garden – those leaves, stems, twigs and debris make great nest material for birds!

You can install nest boxes for almost every garden bird you can think of, including owls, robins, sparrows and house martins. Site them away from feeding grounds, as the activity can disrupt mating pairs, and be patient – it can take a couple of years for birds to fill your box!

Finally, place a bird bath in your garden and keep it topped up with fresh water. Birds will flock to it for drinking and bathing. Put it somewhere you can see it from your window, so you can watch the birds without disturbing them.

Cultivation Street – St Peter’s school garden pond by the students

We’ve had some fantastic entries for the schools category of our Cultivation Street campaign this year. One of them is St Peter’s Junior School in Derby, where pupils have created an incredible school garden, complete with a wildlife pond!

Pupils have also been working towards the RSPB’s Wildlife Action Awards scheme with outdoor education practitioner Katy Doncaster. Two Year 5 pupils, Jasmine and Chessie, aged 10, have chosen to put in extra work and go for gold!

They have to complete a range of tasks, including getting ‘in the news’. Their pond will be featured in the Sunday People newspaper this weekend, but I wanted to give them the opportunity to talk about the incredible work they’re doing, and what they have learned from it. Plus, they’ve come up with a great list of tips for other schools and pupils who are thinking of building a pond! Over to them:

We love the pond because you can just look at it for ages. You can watch things grow – we’d never seen tadpoles grow and change from frog spawn. They have eyes – we didn’t know that. The pond skaters are amazing, they’re just awesome – they can walk on water!

We’ve always looked at creatures that live on the land, but it’s fascinating seeing all the animals that live in the water. We never had any water at school, but now we love to sit and watch the amazing wildlife in the pond.

When you think of pond dangers, you think of drowning, but it’s really not that dangerous. You just need to be careful, and have supervision. We’ve got signs saying the pond is there to let people know. Our pond happens to be in a locked away area that was never been used for anything. We didn’t really have room anywhere else because our garden isn’t that big, so it’s been a good way to use the space.

Our school garden used to be so boring when we were in Year 3, but now we’ve planted lots of vegetables like carrots, beans, pumpkins and wildflowers. We have Sir Oakey too, who is a Royal Oak that was given to school.

This year, we’re working on a place called the Peace Garden, which is where you can go to sit and relax, calm down and think about life. It has a small pebble pond in the middle.

Our Pond Top Tips

1. Make sure it’s somewhere enclosed.

2. Make sure everyone gets to help make it.

3. Ask for donations! Our pond cost next to nothing, because people gave us loads of things – the liner, rockery stones, water plants, green oak edging and frog spawn.

4. Have a good edging for people to kneel or sit on.

5. Put plants in to keep the pond healthy.

6. Make sure you plan out when you’re going to start making your pond, as it takes quite a long time. The best times are spring or autumn.

7. Make time to go outside and see the changes, week by week.

8. It’s really interesting to keep a track of making your pond, and how it develops afterwards – take photos to see all the changes.

One of our teachers said that she is very proud that we do this at school, because she sees the children enjoying it so much, and they get so excited to work in the garden or study the pond. She said that she could spend hours looking in the pond!

Beekeeping: The day the bees moved into their new hive

About a year ago, I took a 12 week course at the British Beekeepers Association in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, to learn about keeping your own bees.

We have a declining bee population in the UK, and I believe it’s up to everybody to do their bit to help. And to be honest, I’d always fancied the idea of keeping bees. And finally, I’ve got a hive full of bees in my garden!

I decided to situate the bees in the corner of my garden where I had recently planted a little micro orchard of mini fruit. It includes apple, pear, cherry and almond trees, and makes the perfect home for my new bees.

My first step was to get a little a beehive. I had it made by a local hive maker out of beautiful red cedar wood.

Now I just needed some bees. My friend Brian, who’s been a beekeeper for 50 years and is mentoring me, helped my find somebody who was selling a nucleus. This is a little bee colony with a queen and her brood which needs a new home.

I actually have two beehives: one with the nucleus and another empty one. Rather than buying bees to fill it, I’m leaving it available to a swarm of bees that naturally finds itself looking for new home.

I was beside myself with anticipation, and the bees finally arrived this week in a little box. In fact, the owner had driven over with the box on his front seat. I can’t tell you how excited I was to see my bees! It was just like being a kid again.

The guys who came to help me settle the bees in took the box over to the hive and opened it. They used a little smoke from a canister to calm the bees down.

It was a marvellous feeling to see the bees settling into their new home. The best thing was seeing some of the bees immediately set off to explore the orchard and heading straight for the fruiting cherry blossoms!

Once all the frames were in, the beehive lid went back on the top. Then we put a little green mat down as a ramp to help some of the stragglers crawl up and into their new home. They seemed very happy with it!

Suited up

There is that initial trepidation, if you’ve never been so close to a beehive before, of suddenly getting caught in a swarm of bees. And the sound of them flying about is as alarming as it is fascinating!

The swarm of bees suddenly appears all around you, and you really have to trust in your suit and gloves and just keep calm.

I’m still trying to get used to these bee suits – they look a bit cumbersome but they’re very easy to use.

It helped that I’m a scuba diver, and have taken part in hundreds of dives, so I’m comfortable in the suit and trust that it will keep me safe.

It was an amazing experience to see the bees settling into their new home and getting used to the area. And now that corner of the garden, full of bees and blossom and fruit trees, just has so much more personality. It’s really come alive.

They are just getting used to the neighbourhood, and we could have our own honey by this time next year!
