You’ll find that in sheltered spots in the garden, you can successfully grow frost-sensitive plants like Chimonanthus praecox (wintersweet).

Once established this large flowering shrub produces spicy scented flowers from December through to March.

The alluring pale waxy-yellow, bowl- or bell-shaped flowers are noticeably stained with red. They have many petals with outer tepals that are almost transparent. And are held in clusters along the branches making them noticeable from a distance.

Given the backdrop of a warm sunny south-facing or east-facing wall, this slow-growing shrub has the potential to reach up to 4m tall. To reach this height it will take 10-20 years. But it will soon reward with its potpourri violet-like scented blooms.

Much like the flowers, the leaves, which resemble spearheads, have a sweet-smelling aroma when crushed.

The variety ‘Grandiflorus’ has the largest flowers, which can be smelled from up to 50 yards away. The flowering stems are prized by flower arrangers who often cut them and bring them indoors to act as a natural, sweet-smelling air freshener.

FUN FACT: Wintersweet blooms can be used to flavour and scent tea or added to potpourri and the oil extracted from the flowers is used in Chinese medicines.

One plant that you will kill with kindness is Iris unguicularis—also known as the Algerian Iris. The buds open in succession through the darkest days to reveal large mauve-blue, fragile flowers. There are vivid egg-yolk yellow streaks on the fall petals or a white feather-like frill. The petals are held close together, making for a fuller, fatter flower than a typical iris.

Too much fertiliser and soil enriched with organic matter can make them run to leaf rather than produce flowers.

To thrive, this evergreen rhizomatous perennial needs poor soil, and the grittier the better.

In mild weather, you may find it flowering as early as Christmas and right into March. During this time, check the grassy clump of arching, and narrow leaves for the flower buds.

If you have a taste for the unusual, try the almost white variety ‘Walter Butt’ or the deep violet ‘Mary Bernard’ for a spectacular show.

Although congested clumps tend to flower better, you can divide them in autumn or spring. But expect the divisions to sulk for a little while before they become established.

FUN FACT: Algerian iris flowers don’t last long but can be picked before they unfurl and enjoyed in a vase indoors where their delightful sweet scent will fill a warm room.

    January Flower – Galanthus (Snowdrops)

Snowdrops are one of the earliest flowers in the year to bloom giving cheer on even the darkest days and the promise of better things to come. Reliable and unassuming, these little plants have hardened tips that enable them to force their way through even the most frosted ground on a cold crisp morning.

The flower of the British native, Galanthus nivalis, has long, elliptical outer petals. The inner petals feature a bold green mark at the tip and silvery green leaves.

A pumped-up version of the common snowdrop is the supersized variety ‘S. Arnott’ has beautiful pure white flowers. These have a bold inverted heart-like green mark at the tips.

It smells deliciously of honey and the bees adore it.

A deliciously sweet scent is also produced by Galanthus, known as the Turkish snowdrop. Which has oval pure white blooms with green inverted V marks at the tip of each inner petal.

They like a dry place and thrive when tucked in the base of a tree or squeezed into the tiniest of gaps on a rockery. But nothing beats the awesome sight of planting en masse beneath trees and shrubs. Where they give the garden the icy look of a fresh fall of snow!

Snowdrops are readily available by mail order from February to May when they are sold ‘in the green’. This means that they are bare-rooted and supplied just as the flower is starting to fade but before the leaves have started to elongate.

FUN FACT: Sometimes the petal markings on snowdrops are not green but yellow making these rare forms very collectable. Leaves also vary from one snowdrop variety to another.

It may be grey and miserable outside, but Christmas indoors should be filled with colour.

And there’s a whole host of houseplants that can lend festive cheer to your home. We perhaps associate Christmas most intimately with the poinsettia and its shock of bright red, star-shaped leaves that are often mistaken for flowers. But they’re not – they’re known as bracts and, in this case, they help attract insects towards the real flowers in the centre. Poinsettias make a great centrepiece for a table or look good by the fireplace. Water twice a week and feed every three to four weeks to keep them in tip-top condition. Some will last for ever, others may see out Christmas then wither.

But there are so many more plants to choose from. I’m a huge fan of Christmas cacti (schlumbergera), which is originally from Brazil and is resplendent in magnificent colours. Smile They’re a great bathroom or kitchen plant and for the sake of a couple of quid, they’ll last for years. They’re low maintenance and there’s no reason why they can’t flower at least once, and in some cases twice, a year. Don’t forget Christmas azaleas, either. They’ll put a smile on the face of every mum and grandma and come in a range of colours from white to red to pink. The trick is to give them a drink of cold tea. The tannins and slight acidity of your cuppa help support the plant. Another favourite is the cyclamen, which is synonymous with Christmas in my house. It’s a lovely upright plant with swept-back flowers sitting above a cloud of silver and green leaves.

Your local garden centre will be full of them. They come in all sizes and some varieties will happily go outside once the weather brightens. My final suggestion is the Christmas cherry (solanum pseudocapsicum), a small bush that looks like it’s got loads of little oranges on it. They’re actually inedible berries, so keep it out of reach of kids and pets. But they give a sprightly splash of colour and are very seasonal. Any of these will embellish your home with colour and aroma and help make Christmas that bit more special.

    Seasonal Tips

    1. Test tree ties Check your tree ties to make sure they’re all secured. And make sure any new trees are properly staked and safeguarded from winter gales. Stakes can also rot, so give them a thorough check. There’s nothing worse than finding your pine’s snapped after a gale.

    2. Make a bed of roses It’s a good time, as long as the ground’s not frozen, to plant roses. You can buy rootwrapped ones from most garden retailers. They’ve been dug up and put into sleeves rather than grown in pots. It’s a cheaper way to buy roses – and they’ll flower next year.

    3. Cover compost Remember to cover your compost heap. With all the rain, you don’t want those good nutrients washing away. A sack, some empty compost bags or some old timber will do the jobs just fine and save your heap becoming sludge.

Falling temperatures may have sealed the fate of many of your gardening jobs but pruning isn’t one of them. Plants and trees that lose their leaves are dormant in winter and this makes it the perfect time to snip, clip and slice them back into full health for the upcoming spring.

So get those secateurs at the ready, it’s time to trim…

With the leaves shed, plant resources are focused in the roots and this makes it easier to judge the plant’s shape and condition. No more cutting it fine, we’re cutting it right!

Plants that benefit most from winter pruning include vigorous climbers that flower on the current year’s growth, newly planted deciduous hedges and deciduous trees.

You can even prune fruit trees like apple and pear trees that you wish to better establish as a winter prune with keep the growing larger in size. Whereas those you don’t want to get much bigger will need regulated pruning.

Leave plants that bloom on last season’s growth, like Forsythia and Philadelphus (mock orange), otherwise you’ll be cutting off the wood that would’ve produced flowers come spring!

Most evergreens are also best left as pruning now can encourage new growth which could be killed off by frost. Use the RHS plant finder to determine which category your plants fall into before you start.

There is one exception to this; all plants need the three D’s – Dead, Damaged and Diseased branches – removed as soon as you spot them. So, chop chop! Pruning away this material prevents disease spreading and creates space for healthy new growth to come through.

One of the greatest benefits of ridding this growth though, is that is refocuses the plant’s energy onto healthy growth, worthy of precious resources in the depths of winter. It is particularly important to remove dead or weakened branches on trees at this time of year – otherwise they could be brought down by storms and cause damage or injury.

Whilst pruning, take the chance to cut away part of a branch or stem (heading back) or remove it altogether (thinning).

    [/fusion_text][fusion_builder_row_inner][fusion_builder_column_inner type=”2_3″ layout=”1_2″ spacing=”” center_content=”no” hover_type=”none” link=”” min_height=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_position=”left top” background_repeat=”no-repeat” border_size=”0″ border_color=”” border_style=”solid” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=”” last=”no” border_position=”all”][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]

Heading back is used to remove damaged ends or to encourage your plant to bush out lower down the stem.

Thinning, on the other hand, is used to rejuvenate plants that are overcrowded with branches, allowing light and air through to promote healthy growth and increase resistance to disease.

Whichever method you use, it’s important always to cut at a jaunty 45 degree angle which slopes away from any bud present on the stem and to leave a short stub in place.

Prune to roughly a quarter of an inch above a healthy node (the swelling on the branch or stem on which buds form) at your stub’s highest point.

The angle of your cut enables water to drain away, preventing healthy growth from rotting, while leaving a small stub prevents it from drying out without leaving enough material on the plant to cause infection and disease.

For overgrown established climbers, you can opt for the technique ‘thinning’ to remove entire branches that disturb the natural growing shape by trailing in the wrong direction or above the natural canopy.

If there are branches that rub against one another, either remove both or try to identify which of the two can be lost without compromising the plant’s overall structure and then thin out.

Your aim is to increase air flow and light penetration into the centre of the plant to keep it healthy.

Use the heading back method to keep enthusiastic climbers, like Lonicera (honeysuckle) and Trachelospermum (star jasmine), from becoming leggy and outgrowing their bounds.

If your climber has only a few leggy stems, heading back to just a couple of nodes on each stem will encourage lots of sideways growth that will make the plant more attractive and well-rounded next season.

You can also use this method to reinvigorate an established climber that has become a tangled mess that makes selective pruning impossible.

Deciduous ornamental trees can be pruned for shape during winter and fruit trees, like apples and cherries, will produce larger, juicier fruits next year if well-pruned during the cold season.

This is because selective pruning allows them to focus their fruit-production efforts on fewer, quality fruits rather than spreading their efforts too thinly across a larger quantity.

Trees are best pruned with selective thinning. You’re looking to create a wine glass shape with an open centre of branches that are not touching one another.

This allows light and air through to the centre of the tree promoting and preserving overall health.

If your tree is very overgrown, enlisting the help of a qualified tree surgeon may be best as it can be difficult to correct problems with trees as a beginner.

Newly planted deciduous hedges, such as Carpinus betulus (hornbeam), Crataegus monogyna (hawthorn) and Fagus sylvatica (beech), need to be pruned in their first two winters to establish their shape.

This is a very simple process that is similar to getting a haircut – simply give the hedge a short back and sides but leave the top alone.

This encourages plants to grow upwards rather than sideways until the desired height of the hedge is reached.
