QI want to install a water butt to take advantage of our British climate and save money on my water bill. But is tap water cleaner and better for houseplants?
Joan, Southampton
A Actually, no. Tap water is fine for drinking, but it sometimes contains additives and chemicals (fluoride, for instance), that won’t necessarily help your houseplants to thrive.
The reverse is true of rain, so a water butt is an excellent idea. Rain water is filtered by the clouds and comes fresh from nature. Water harvested from drainpipes and guttering is ideal for plants inside and out!
